The word “shampoo” originated from “champo” and “dungarees” from Mumbai’s Dongri. These were some of the eye-popping revelations made in a chat between The English Nut and who else but Shashi Tharoor. You can check out the English Nut's channel at: / @theenglishnut

Awesome, as always, Mr. Tharoor! For those who like to know more about words, the word 'brinjal' has its root in Portuguese. As you know part of India was ruled by Portuguese (पुर्तगाली). Goa still has most of the names from Portuguese colonists (not English). In Portuguese, 'berinjela' means eggplant and that became 'brinjal' in India. As we considered every foreigner as 'गोरा' and that by inference meant English, it all added to our English dictionary. I am sure there are many other words in Indian English that are rooted in Portuguese. The word 'आया' for nurse is from Portuguese word 'aia' for nurse. Hope you enjoyed this tiny tidbit. Thanks.

"kattu" in Tamil means "to tie" and " maram" means " tree". Hence "kattu maram" means "trees tied together". Fishermen in our state tie a couple of logs of wood together which looks like a raft. This we call "kattu maram". "kattu" does not mean "to cut"

The same goes for brinjal. What I found in searching the origin of the word is that a French painter Claude Aubriet who lived in seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was famous for his works on botanical objects. A purple-colour funnel-shaped flower of a bushy plant is named aubergine after the name of this painter. The fruit of the plant is also called aubergine in French. It retains its name in English. But in North America the fruit is called eggplant due to its large oval shape. The name aubergine changed to berinjela in Portuguese. The fruit was introduced to India by Portuguese sailors. The South Indians changed the name from berinjela to brinjal. Since the fruit was brought to India by Europeans, and Indians have a common tendency to confuse all Europeans for Englishmen, the term brinjal is mistakenly considered an English word in India.

And idk why you guys make a huge deal with North Indians as if we are not Indians. I have been to south once and people start taking in their own language so that I can't get what they are saying. Personally I feel this foolish and childish things to even care about a language😂. Rest depends on personal preferences and thinking.

Catamaran is not "cut wood" as Shashi Tharoor explained. In Tamil கட்டு "Kattu" means To Tie. Pieces of wood are tied with rope to function as a make-shift floater. This is the etymology for Kattu-maram which then made its way as 'catamaran' into .en
@sskiyer
@sskiyer 3 года назад
I too was surprised when Dr. Tharoor said that. Actually, both the Dravidian root words mean the same in Malayalam as well. Probably he was thinking about 'cut' in English and it was just an error. In fact many (not all) of the Tamil words that have made it into English mean the same in Malayalam also (eg. cash, mango, mullaga twany, caunjee ...) as Malalayam allows the use of many pure Tamil (Dravidian) words, many even in daily conversations.
