Magnus was always a good boy. He broke the rules trying to save the imperium. Had the emperor listened to his son who CLEARLY went through extreme lengths to talk to him, he could've stopped the horus heresy. Or at least massively reduced the traitor forces. :C

In the 2nd or 3rd Horus Heresy book (I forget which) Horus states that 3 of his brothers are so completely loyal to the Emperor that it is pointless to even try swaying them: Guilliman, Sanguninius, and Magnus.

Neel Oak of course he did he damned his legion by not answering his brothers calls to return home. The Great Wolf tried to talk several times but Magnus just sulked and lead to the down fall of prospero.

I do like how at this point the Loyalists are essentially all offensive balanced, so you have madman Kurz, Master infiltrator Alpharius/Omagon, and then the sigebreakers Pertarbo, Angron, *and* Mortarian, arguably Magnus belongs in that group as well, as his overwhelming psychic might can be easily used from a massive distance, the only ones that don't fit that mold are Lorgar, the Indoctrinator I guess? Horus the Protagonist, and Fulgrim the Perfect, and also very dead. So you need to find a way to turn this defensive one into an offensive one, so you have discovery quick, and sabotages often, then pertarabo designing basically ambuscade points and open fields to slaughter people with devastating counter attacks moreso then hiding behind their walls, it leads to a more interesting war because those specialized in defense are the ones forced onto the offence, and vice versa, loads of behind the lines fighting, simply because of the design of the war.

Nurgle Blood Angels are still better.

Okay so Mortarion, Perturabo, Horus, Lorgar, and Alpharius are still alive.

I didn't really like most of the deaths, all the primachs who died did so too easily, imo. I think the story was a bit to close to canon, in general. I imagine it would have played out completely differently with different sides, rather than the primachs all just essentially swapping roles. Also, why did Magnus have to have his spine snapped by Russ in canon, then killed off-screen by him here (Off-page? Off-script? Not sure how to word that for a spoken story, hah). And why couldn't Magnus also teleport himself with his legion, like he did in canon? (Yes, I do play a Thousand Sons army, haha). I know grimdark is the name of the game, but there was so much room for creativity and this felt more like a shitty modern remake of older films to me, hah. I'm not saying it's bad, I still enjoyed it (Lorgar was great in this), but I feel that there were a lot of missed opportunities here for a completely new story.

To be honest if the loyalist primarchs were traitors I think they would win with Dorn at the helm. Such stoic champion would laugh at the loyalist traitors

Horus was the perfect combination of a warrior, general, and politician. Without him, even Sanguinius would struggle to have his brothers join his cause

Little Horus turns into a yes man at the start of the Heresy. Mal was more proactive and independent. It kinda makes sense for Little Horus to be the equirrey as all his thoughts and beliefs line up well with Horus whereas Mal would be more open with his beliefs and keep Horus in line. That's just my opinion though... That being said, Mal was a yes man too, but, again, less self-conscious about the whole "being an imperfect copy of his primarch" thing.

Maybe Little Horus dies against the White Scars so Mal joins up

actually i would see IW returning to Imperium. Out of all hereticus chapters - a) they have the least ties to chaos gods b) they have actually out of all legion good reason to be ... mad at imperium - they were a working horse of crusade, no glory, no fame, no recognition. While Perturabo all in all, while ruthless, is creature of cold logic. His "daemon ascension" is dodgy thing (he's daemon prince of what god of what allegiance - Perturabo don't really like chaos gods and mutations (see him and Fulgrim story within eye of terror) - soooo ... I think he would be talked down to return to emperium (it wouldn't be easy)

if ultramar rebelled, it would be a flat rebellion and not chaos-fueled. i could easily have seen guilliman saying "but MY empire isn't fucked up...." and just laying out of the whole deal

Lorgar got the same kind of apotheosis, so be powerful enough, and Undivided is still an option (plus it used to actually be an on table option)

personally i'm just gad someone decided to have Angron not do something ridiculously stupid because nails. I mean not to throw hate at the H.H writers but having a MAJOR character point be "he is seriously fuck ass mad all the time" and not be holy fuck he is the ONLY primarch to never conquer his home planet never be expanded upon, or fleshed out really saddens me. He was always my favorite and after reading Betrayer, he only became better. I don't know i just don't buy the whole "I can stand Horus, more than i can stand the Emperor" bit i kind of would have liked to see him be a "rough" Primarch a war lord out to make his empire or something of the like.

i like that you critized it but did not troll it. You gave specific concise thoughts and preferences. I guess I am just so used to people hitting the dislike button or writing a short review like "This Sucks!" and then moving on with contempt that when I first started reading this I assumed this was just another example of that. But I was wrong.

I can answer the first question. The mechanics, while many do believe the emperor to be the machine God/ominisichia(which yes, are different however it is unclear to what degree. Similar to different Christian philosophies. Some of which claim Jesus(ominisichia) to be different while others dont). Many did not, especially before the hearsay and the fabricator general was known to want an independent mars and did not think the emperor was either.

I read a version where Angron still got the butcher's nails, but the emperor teleported him and his Gladiators to the ship earning his Loyalty

I can’t remember if it’s this version or another one but I remember one where they got to him before the nails

I think this is the Dornian Heresy version of him. Horus convinced the Emperor to take to the field of battle, rather then just teleporting Angron away, earning his loyalty, which was then cemented with the removal of the Butchers Nails, since they weren't fully embedded yet. This caused him to be more compassionate, and trained his legion to be disciplined martial soldiers, rather then bezerkers.

I mean Angron hated this dad but he hated cowardice, weakness and anything other than melee combat more. Despite that being the perfect storm for a fall to Khorne, remember that Angron never actually really made the choice for himself. Given no one other than Lorgar was known to really hang out with him, it makes sense that a loyalist Lorgar would do the same thing he did in cannon but the opposite, make the target their weakeness, and the hound of war was ready to kick some ass. I fully believe Angron could have stayed loyal even with the brain nails if the circumstances around the heresy kept the traitors away from him for a while

@@ianharrison5758 Angron kinda was a failure of a primarch. He got caught, and enslaved. Than lead a rebellion that was doomed. And than blamed everyone else for it. Yes the emperor didn't help him. But it wasn't the emperor who chose to rebel, or commanded the rebellion poorly. That was angron. And Angron would continue this trait of horrible leadership all through the great crusade and horus heresy. Costing his own legion, and the other legions dearly time after time. And even when Russ tried to correct it by showing him what 'tactics' mean, he didn't get the message. Taking away that he "won the duel". But it was obvious to everyone else that Russ won, and could've had angron killed at any moment through superior tactics. A traitor russ is actually MORE terrifying than a traitor Angron. Because Russ was calculated, and smart. He was also made for execution of astartes. I like angron, but I kinda feel leaving him in charge of a single squad is probably too much responsibility. He should've never been given ANY form of command ANYWHERE, EVER. And instead paired with the lion. Used as a champion for the lion. This would also open a path to a loyaltist Angron and world eaters. If they were more or less embedded into the backside of the lion to avoid them being....Well angron and the world eaters. They likely would've just stayed with him. And the lion was probably one of the primarchs most dangerous to the traitors. They naturally feared him. He was also the only one that truly matched Horus. Well one of like three. The other two being Dorn and Fulgrim. Horus admitted that lunar wolves fighting the imperial fist/dorn in their element would be unending and unwinnable. Heck Dorn with usually sub 3 legions, fought 9 legions for 7 years, and was starting to win on Terra. As for Fulgrim, well Fulgrim's legion was small. But they were argueably one of the best legions of them all. Fulgrim was more or less given a challenge when being allowed to use the Aquila. To live up to the speech and vision for his legion. And he did. His first campaign proves it, when he crushes an enemy multiple other legions couldn't really do, by himself. And while he did suffer great losses, that doesn't take away that the job was supposed to take up multiple full legion deployments. And instead Fulgrim and his small legion did it, and did it well. Another example is when he crept up on Horus and nearly ended the entire thing if not for the blade's corruption. It was the moment Horus came closes to complete failure. Horus hit the jack pot when he scored Fulgrim, not least of which meant he actually survived that encounter. So I think embedding an Angron into the backside of a loyalist Lion, is probably the best way to deal with it. Have the lion controlling both legions, and angron being allowed to just do angron things. He'd probably even be happier that way.
