I adore this unknown classic, and here is my favorite part of the movie... the thief stealing the golden balls. Whoever voiced this guy was amazing. Enjoy.
Honestly, if you interpret the Thief's inner monologues as someone riffing on this movie, it makes the Miramax version of The Thief and the Cobbler just that bit more bearable.
Considering this is Jonathan Winters, the guy who inspired Robin Williams, I would totally believe that since the guy could improvise with anything presented before him. His most famous bit involved being given a stick and asked what to do with it, within the span of 5-10 minutes, he would come up with multiple scenarios and sketches using nothing but a stick and leave the audience in stitches. Years later, Robin Williams would do a variation of that sketch for Sesame Street. So while this version of the Thief and the Cobbler is completely not in line with Richard Williams' vision, there is some amusing irony in Miramax re-editing the film after the success of Aladdin and hiring Robin Williams' muse and influence to voice the Thief. Plus, even I have to admit, Jonathan Winters is probably the only memorably funny thing from this cut.
@@Volts48 I have a weird way to think about each of the released versions. The Princess And The Cobbler (the Calvert version, no thief voice) is a better representation of Williams’s original vision (which is definitely the best version), while the Miramax version is the better film. I hate to admit it, but Jonathan Winters can honestly be pretty funny in here, but I do feel bad that this is one of his last bigger roles, and it is definitely disrespectful to the original invisionment (even though Jonathan not Miramax knew).
Finally...the Thief's mumblings were the best part of this movie, when I was little, and I can't for the life of me find this version anywhere else on the internet XD
For such a skinny guy, the fact that he managed to lift each golden ball (all of which are obviously heavy AF) from the very top of the minaret, is nothing short of amazing.
I loved this movie so much. The theif was my favorite, always making me laugh. I asked my friends at school if they had ever seen this. When they told me no, I couldn't help but think, 'you guys had no childhood -_-'
I love love love this version. I wish someone could post THIS version cuz this is the best version of the movie where you hear the thiefs inner monologue.
Won this movie on a cruise during an Easter Egg hunt when I was little. Loved this version so much!!! Thief was the best character. Did the thief’s single shoe dangling from his toes all movie give anyone else incredible anxiety? 😂😎
you know, after you've watched the recubbled cut, the video really does feel like an abridged parody. however, i still prefer the thief as silent. i think his character was conveyed just fine.
I wish someone would make a version of the re-cobbled cut that reinserted the thief's lines. I think tack being silent adds to his character, but I think Jonathan Winters nailed this character. Aside from that, not a fan of the Miramax version, but still wish we had this thief in the original.
I think he ruined it. He's only supposed to be thriving because he loves doing it. He shouldn't be panicking or fussing over the things he's gonna buy (which shouldn't even exist in the 3rd century), he just loves sneaking around.
As a child who recieved this as a gift on vhs, i didn't know any better. This version is flat out nostalgic to me. When i saw bits of the original and it didn't have his monolog, i felt.... incomplete. Its simply just one of those scenarios where I'm one of the only ones that's gonna end up liking this. Me n my friends use to quote the thief when we were wee lads too!
@@Scars1023 exactly! I loved this movie when I was little and the thief had me laughing so much, I think if a movie can make you laugh and give comfort, especially for kids then its good :))
@@lexlixatkwa7nelson3 i think the only thing that i noticed as a kid, is that some of the songs definitely weren't catchy or memorable. And i think i MIGHT of even noticed the dips in quality in animation in certain segments. Like i noticed how some parts were drawn nicer than in other scenes. Overall, i loved that movie and i loved showing it off to other kids at the time, who hadn't heard of it
***** It does get better - the beginning is slow and complicated, but that's kind of what Williams had in mind. The rest contains more of the classic animation and throws out the songs and voiceovers for bits like the above.
I love the thief voiceover. He has hilarious thoughts in that head of his, and we really get to “hear” it here. Makes the character/movie more personable I find.
In the original version when the Thief looks down, I can imagine it going like this: Thief's thoughts: Well, at least I made it. I wonder how high up I am, anyway. (Looks down) Whoa! I think I just remembered what rule number 3 is...
Gosh, thank you. I need this full version again. My VHS is no longer in playable condition. I loved this movie. Without the thief's inner monologue the movie is so dull.
1:13 For the 1993 cut "The Princess and the Cobbler", if the Thief spoke in his mind and Steve Martin voiced him, I bet he would say these lines a little differently before Jonathan Winters would do them. Like so: (Smallest gold ball) "And you're gonna buy me a castle in Scotland." (Medium-sized gold ball) "And you're gonna buy me everything I need to turn my basement into a home gym." (Biggest gold ball) "And as for you, sweetcakes.... I'm tellin' ya. I'm going to Disney World!"
When I was little there was not a day that I wasn't watching this movie! I legit still listen to the soundtrack (or I would if Amazon Music didn't remove it). The dub is the best version.
Never gets old. and one of my more fav movies. It didn't need to be redone (recobbled as they put it) with the thief's voice (thoughts) being taking out.
I probably only seen this movie once as a kid but it really stood out to me from how weird it was. Was starting to think this movie was a weird fever dream. But I especially remembered this scene; what I was seeing and what I was hearing didn't even make sense to my little child brain.
Pardon me, alana grace, but the voice you're thinking of is Jonathan Winters. He gave the Thief internal monologue thoughts when the character did pantomime. I just thought I'd remind you who that voice was.
It's weird...I respect Richard Williams's vision so on the one hand it's a bit upsetting that they decided to give the Thief an inner monologue for purposes of accessibility. On the other hand...Jonathan Winters is so damn funny.
I like this version better at least it was funny. A lot of people give the inner monologues grief but to me they were little gems of Comedy sprinkled throughout the movie
I know it's not the original but I actually prefer this version with the thief's constant inner monologue. It made it so much funnier as a kid and now I can appreciate those jokes as an adult. I think both versions are good for different reasons.

Disregard that first rule. I don't know much about tight rope walking, but I'm pretty sure the eyes are suppose to be straight ahead, not necessarily on the wire. Monkey feet are probably a good idea, though.
He was an comedian and voice actor. For example, He was one of two cast members of the Hanna Barbera Smurfs series to have an role in the live action films. Winters originally voiced Grandapa Smurf, in the animated series then voiced Papa Smurf in the two live action Smurfs films. Frank Welker was the only other cast member in both the live action films and the animated series.
The thief’s dialogue is a bit much but I could still see why people like him (I personally prefer the re-cobbled cut over the voice over) other than that the un-cobbled version is... egh

The Miramax version is an abortion. There was supposed to be NO dialog from either the thief OR the cobbler. The completion bond company that took the movie away from Richard Williams ruined it. Having the thief constantly blather on in his head gets old fast...but, of course I'm sure the inner monologue was added because people are really stupid and can't figure out whats going on on their own, being idiots and all. Also, the switch from the original animation and the "new" stuff is jarring. Check out the recobbled cut.

Because years ago, when I was a small child, I went through a period where I was depressed and prone to crying and throwing fits more so then usual and for no good reason. Then one night, my mother and father brought home a movie that they thought would cheer me up. The Mirimax version, and for the first time in a long time, I smiled and laughed again. The version Williams hated helped me when I needed it and for that I will NEVER turn my back on it. When I saw the re-cobbled version, IT felt like the aborted verison. And if you tell me I should dislike it because Williams did, I have four words for you. I'm not Richard Williams.
I wish this movie was like the recobboled cut but still had johnathan winters voice over, he's way funnier than what I could come up for the character in my head.
Disney used their puppet company (Miramax) to make fun of The Thief and The Cobbler as though it were a rip off of Aladdin despite it being the original.
Well I Love Disney and The Thief and the Cobbler 1995 Miramax Version, And the ReCobbled Cut Mark 4. and I love going to Disney World in Orlando. :3 So if you want to go to Disney Land Thief You might wanna go to the one in Orlando. :3 But wait until the Star Wars Area is finished. :)
