There are some pretty dramatic simplifications in here. For example, I did not talk about beta readers or perspective readers. For me, after the main revision is done, I send the book to a half-dozen or so people who have things in common with my characters that I don't. Race, gender, nationality, age, socio-economic status, education, sexual orientation, etc. That's one of my favorite parts of the process and gets spread out over a number of months.
Anyway, as John said, A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor is available for pre-order now! www.hankgreen.com

Three things: 1. That transition was FABULOUS I could feel my heart going whOA 2. John saves the day again 3. Hank - have you found that writing a sequel is easier/faster than writing the first book? A lot of authors seem to churn out sequels much faster than first books, and I'm wondering if that's an experience thing (you're used to the characters, you have a cemented and unchangeable foundation to work from, maybe the sequel already existed as a part of the first book that was cut from the final edit, etc.) or if it's pushed by the publishers/editors.

Editing is fun! It's the end of the unseeable abyss! Finally, most of the tools you're working with are visible on the page, and if you have to create a big new thing, you're just sliding it in like the last puzzle piece. ... Which, okay, is sometimes still brutal. But slightly less hopeless!

Hank, you have been responsible for my reading of 1Q84 a few months ago BECAUSE of how well you sold the ambitious nature the storytelling and worldbuiling (dont remember which video, it was about your writing process but dont know if it was on hank's or vb) and this is one of my favorite books today. So, a) thanks :D, secondly, it makes me very excited to know that you feel your next book is very ambitious - being a writer myself, i have been through this feeling on my second novel and currently am right there about the novel i am currently writing - and it feels like this is a feeling shared by those people who discovered how much they love writing; 3: still havent picked up an absolutely remarkable thing, i should probably get around to that, but to be honest i fell into a murakami spiral which was your fault, ultimately (see point a).); IV being in Brazil I dont really relate to your editor-market process, i have had different pressures on different stages of the publishing opus, but I still hope you can end the thing you would like to end.

I have been re-editing my first self-published novel (from 2015) for almost a year now. I was close to finishing edits on my second book when I realized I wanted to apply all the things I learned over 3+ years to Book One, which hadn't really gained much of an audience. I didn't change the story and barely touched the dialogue (which I consider to be the things that made the book what it was and needed to be). But I've reworked most of the other text. Descriptions were always a struggle for me, and now they are at least more readable. Anyhow, I've been struggling a lot with motivation as I come closer to completing this long process. I can't help but worry it won't be worth it. Yes, the book is better than it's ever been before. I am so close to being (as much as you *ever* can be) happy with it. But it being better doesn't necessarily mean anyone will care. And this process has been the most critical I've ever been of my original work, of a story so vulnerable and personal that I'm terrified of how it will be received... if it ever even *is* received. The last few years of work have awakened my inner self-critic, which has been horrible for my anxiety and depression. And I think again and again: is it really worth it? I've wanted to be a writer (and nothing else) since I was eleven. But it is so much harder than I imagined it would be.

THIS was my exact experience with getting an edit letter for my book. "This is good. It can be better, but it is good. Here is 20+ pages of how it is not good." WHAAAAAAAAAA-- *brooklyn 9-9 intro music*

John is SUCH a good big brother. Also, before my students hand their work in, I have them either read it aloud to someone OR have someone else read it aloud. They think I'm crazy, but their final product is always better for having done that step.

I'm going to just keep bringing up the fact that your book comes out on my birthday which means it'll be a good birthday to some degree even if it's awful. I just hope we make it that far into the year because it feels so far away right now

The ending of this video is so on brand for both brothers 🤣 Hank doesn’t mention the name or details of his book; John makes sure it’s shoved in the last 20 seconds

It's good to have a brother who can put in all the stuff you left out before the video ends, LOL. That was great. The whole thing was great.
