THE THINGS THAT HAPPEN WHEN YOU ARE OUT SOLO 

Having the GoPros in the cockpit when a student is out solo seems like SUCH an amazing tool to have. This is my first vid with Sam, and he does a really good 'vlog-job' of keeping his patter going during the flight; very stream-of-consciousness.

Sam, because of your title I kept waiting for things to go wrong and they never did. Looks like your doing very well. How many hours do you have at this point? In 1963 I took lessons at Burbank Airport, CA, in a Hughes 269A. On my solo cross-country I had so much go wrong. Being a student pilot I should not have flown that day because of the poor visibility but because I only had to go 25 miles get my log book signed and return, I flew. It’s been 57 years and I can’t remember why I didn’t land at my first choice and went to my alternate and that wasn’t an option so…it all went down hill from there. I got into Long Beach Control and was called a ding-a-ling by the CT and almost had a mid-air collision with the Disneyland Sikorsky helicopter and I made my way to Huntington Beach and landed at a small airfield, Meadowlark, and landed. I got my logbook signed. Had to borrow money to get some fuel. By the time I got back to Burbank the sun had gone down and was dark. I tried to contact Burbank tower to no avail. Found out later the radio had malfunctioned. Anyway, that was my last flight. I really felt… lucky I survived. I just stumbled across this and it brought back memories when I was a student pilot. Thanks for the post.

Catching up on these really enjoyable videos. Really good flying and commentary Same. Been flying X-plane with the Cabri which is great fun (I know - I'm jealous of all you real pilots!) and these videos help me improve and practice preciseness. But I get a trial 1 hour lesson tomorrow in the Cabri at Staverton, UK, hooray!. Really looking forward to it but I just know I'll want more! Thanks to Mischa!

I love helicopters and am considering pursuing it as a career, is that something you would suggest?

I wonder If I'm to big of a person to be a helicopter pilot. 6' 265 lbs. Even when i'm down to about 240 i'm still very broad. What is the safe zone for a pilot?

I didn’t mind the take-off when I flew a helicopter because there was someone else in the cockpit with me, but I was a bit nervous having to land it on my own.

Ok so here’s a question. I got my ppl just a couple weeks ago here in the U.S. and I’m working on my instrument and commercial and I know that in the U.S. after your commercial license you can’t get a job you have to become a CFI for first job as I’m sure you know the whole process but in Canada don’t you get your first job with your commercial rating? Just wondering why it is that way

That cyclic is a world of tricky. I took a primilary lesson and it is almost a magic trick learning that cyclic. He doesent emphasize that in these videos,

The student pilot should not fly the downwind portion of the circuit over the water, if possible If he lost a motor at that altitude he probably doesn’t have the skill or experience to quickly turn to shoot the auto back to the gravel or over the trains. Unless he has been trained in 180 autos, he most likely would fixate on going straight ahead as he probably has only practiced that type of autorotation. Best to find a better LZ for a low timer.
