I love that Soresu is the most defensive form as you pointed out. It compliments how Obi wan fights in episodes 2 and 3. You can clearly see this in his fight with Dooku in AOTC and his fights against Grevious and Anakin in ROTS
@GetShaftedBuddy In the Revenge of the Sith novel, both Obi-Wan and Anakin switched up styles during the duel with Dooku. Of course, in that case they deliberately used forms that were less than ideal to trick Dooku.
@@zakkmylde1712 yeah and he had a definite connection to the force, but he wasn't as strongly connected naturally as plo, I would say he was perhaps a better scholar of the force though
I would love a Star wars type of game where you can choose your fighting style, your force abilities you wanna master, go on missions keeping the peace for the republic. I basically want the Hogwarts game for the ps5 but star wars
Fun Fact: While Maul normally used Form 7/Juyo, (a very ferocious and aggressive form of combat) when he faced against Darth Sidious alongside Savage in The Clone Wars, he immediately went with Form 3/Soresu. This was a good touch showing the genuine fear Maul had for his former master.
In the Kenobi show, it shows in the last fight with Vader that Ben can be offensive as well. He even did the behind the back twirl, often seen as Anakin’s move, which shows that Kenobi was the one who taught Anakin his moves in the first place. The dude really was THE master.
The form itself was meant to be purely defensive in technique. I've always seen this (and vice versa with every other form) to mean that the learning the form puts all of your focus into learning defense, but doesn't limit the user to pure defense for using it. It wouldn't surprise me that someone who focused on Serisu would also learn compatible offensive techniques to fill the void that the form has in that field. Obi-Wan is the obvious example in this. Focusing on Serisu would mean that yes, he's way more defensive than offensive, but doesn't necessarily mean that the Jedi/Sith themselves have no way to go offensive in this form through use of other compatible techniques. "Lacking kill moves" is a limit of the Form, not the Jedi using it - at least that's how I always saw Lightsaber Forms.
@@solugad Right. Plus we know Obi-Wan was VERY proficient in form IV from his padawan days. Not too far fetched that he made sure to train up his offense for the eventuality that Soresu wouldn’t be enough.
I love how in the Brotherhood novel, Kenobi's fighting style is described as an elegant dance of violence, and Anakin's fighting style is just the unrelenting destruction as if from a tank.
You can't deny how badass Obi-wan Kenobi is with the form Soresu. In the Clone Wars, whenever he uses this form one of the first scenes that came to mind are the three different fights scenes that he had throughout the series. Once in the Clone Wars movie when facing Ventress, once in S2 when fighting Pre Vizla and his team of Mandolorian from Death Watch, and once in S4 when Darth Maul has resurfaced and challenges Obi-wan for a rematch.
His fight against maul and savage on i think florum was masterful. took them both down in that hallway. They were literally running from him as Hondo stated lol
Loved the Soresu breakdown, hearing about the different lightsaber fighting forms is always fun! Would love to see a theory on What If Maul was Grand Inquisitor, and see how you think he and Vader would get along working together.. Cheers!
@@bigmonke1449 Hahaha, yessir! Jedi Master? Isaac! You seek Isaac! Lmao, all jokes aside, yeah I swing my saber around every once and awhile for fun 😁👊
Please make one about Trakata!! The most forgotten of all forms, igniting and retracting your saber to your advantage (Darach's way of killing Malgus' Master, Darth Vindican). Lightsabers are retractable (vs. traditional sword fighting) and I wish both sides used it to their advantage more (even though apparently the Sith are too proud)... imagine your lightsabers are about to clash and you sneakily retract your saber, dodge and immediately have a quick window to take down your opponent. Or mid-saber clash, retracting and dodging in a split second would throw off your opponents balance so effectively! With double-sided weapons (as Darach did), you can ignite that second side at a moments notice and totally catch your enemy by surprise. BTW, Love your content for years now, and thank you so much for bringing positive and inclusive vibes to the fandom!!!
I love content relating to lightsaber combat so much; it's one of my biggest obsessions within the Star Wars universe. I'm personally more partial to Form II: Makashi for it's elegance, balance (physical and mental) and purist expression of the lightsaber as an exotic weapon of swordsmanship; the reverence for duelling as evident with Count Dooku (his lightsaber design also being my favorite next to Qui-Gon's). Of course, I love all forms for different reasons, and feel it's highly beneficial to know at least one or two additional forms in conjunction with a preferred specialty in order to compensate for inherent weaknesses, or to complement a certain strength.
Whats great about soresu is that its one of most of practical and easiest forms to use. You dont have to be acrobatic like yoda to use it. Soresu is all about defense, and its ready stance reflects that. From jedi knight academy. Soresu means your lighstaber should be held in a tight neutral guard or close to your body. Lightsaber held in front of you aligned with your belly so you can easily block from all angles. If you play something like vader immortal vr, its a great game to practice soresu. You would also find out how practical soresu it is.
I would like to know the combination of lightsaber forms, specifically if it’s better to be a master of one or skilled in each form to adapt to different situations. I know Anakin used Jar’Kai in his first duel with Dooku as to give him an edge. A sort of surprise if you will to the opponent, as Obi-Wan knew Anakin wouldn’t be able to hold off Dooku with just Form V.
This reminds me how much I love Qui-Gon and how he was a big part of what Obi-Wan became. -------------- (Master and Apprentice, Claudia Gray, 2019.) Just before Obi-Wan would leave the room, Qui-Gon said, "Once, you asked me about the basic lightsaber cadences. Why I'd kept you there, instead of training you in more advanced forms of combat." Obi-Wan turned reluctantly to face him again. "I suppose you thought I wasn't ready for me. The same way I'm not ready to believe in all this mystical__" "That's not why." After a long pause, Obi-Wan calmed to the point where he would listen. "Then why, Qui-Gon?" "Because many Padawans - and full Jedi Knights, for that matter - forget that the most basic technique is the most important technique. The purest. The most likely to protect you in the battle, and the foundation of all knowledge that is to come," Qui-Gon said. "Most apprentices want to rush ahead to styles of fighting that are flashier and more esoteric. Most Master let them, because we must all find our preferred form eventually. But I wanted you to be grounded in your technique. I wanted you to understand the basic cadences so well that they would become instinct, so that you would be almost untouchable. Above all, I wanted to give you the training you needed to accomplish anything you set your mind to later on." -------------- (Revenge of the Sith novelization, Matthew Stover, 2005.) There is an understated elegance in Obi-Wan Kenobi's lighsaber technique, one that is quite unlike the feel one might get from the other great swordsbeings of the Jedi Order. He lacks entirely the flash, the pure bold elen of an Anakin Skywalker; there is nowhere in him the penumbral ferocity of a Mace Windu or a Depa Billaba nor the stylish grace of a Shaak Ti or a Dooku, and he is nothing resembling the whirlwind of destruction that Yoda can become. He is simplicity itself.
I think my favorite use of Kenobi's brilliance was his final duel with Maul, he opens up with his Soresu but then switches to Ataru, pretty sure he got inside mauls head with that stance but in the middle of 3 movements switches back to Soresu and ends the fight. beautiful. I think there was a coversation between Windu and some one else talking how Obi is THE master of form 3, is it better to be a master of a traditional form or to be a master of a new form (Vapaad)
@StarWarsTheory Love the information on this. Thank you also for your recommendation of “Dath Plagueis” Audiobook….it was absolutely an incredible adventure.
I got form four on Leia's Lair quiz, so I'm excited to hear your breakdown of that form in particular. I also want to know more about form 7 because it's my second favorite.
I would love to see an analysis video on what lightsaber form would have better suited an aging Kenobi. Maybe a theory video where Kenobi secretly learns Vaapad from Windu before his death.
Qui Gon, Obi Wan, and Anakin’s forms fit their characters and their philosophies so well. Form 4 is aggression while relying on the force to guide you, once you commit to a move you have to see it through regardless of the outcome you are at the mercy of the move. Qui Gon adhered to the living force above all else even if it lead to his demise. Form 3 is defensive until an opportunity presents itself to counter, even with blaster deflected never reflected. Obi wan adhered to the Jedi code even when the truth was presented he didn’t take the opportunity to strike first and it cost the Jedi and the republic. Too much defense without offense only delays the inevitable. Form 5 is Aggressive taking the fight to the enemy returning their strikes with heavy counters. Anakin is an aggressive duelist hammering away his opponents defenses hatefully, passionately, fearfully ultimately leading to his downfall to the darkside.
I was all about the 3 forms when I dominated on Jedi Outcast and Academy back on PC. The good old days. Best lightsaber combat in a video game ever done
2:55 That could be another reason why Obi-Wan never killed Vader despite having the chance on two occasions. Additionally, it would explain how Maul managed to survive for so long.
Count Dooku recognized that Obi-Wan had become the master of form 3 as well when they fought, he also recognized that not only was he ridiculously good defensive, but he would switch to form 2 and form 4 offensively against the count as well
Obi Wan was definitely a calm and collective fighter, this style definitely fits him. I’ve always had a question that’s off subject, where were the temple guards during order 66? Did Anakin/Vader kill them? Or did the 501st overwhelm them? Always been super curious about them.
Man I gotta say one could argue that Darth Bane won when reading the book and how it ended lol. He was having a problem with his right arm the entire time and once the essence transfer was complete Darth Zanna was clinching her right hand opening and closing it as if it felt weird to have the pain gone from the body. So it makes for good conversation thats for sure lol.
You should make a video on why Vader never went looking for R2-D2. After revenge of the sith? He went out of his way to retrieve R2 once during the clone wars.
If u can could you do a video explaing what the force exactly is and its history in star wars lore ive always wondered what the force is so if u could do a vid that would be great
Obi Wan was really the perfect Jedi (as perfect as someone can be) it helped that Qui-Gon was one of the best pure Jedi and then Anikan was the opposite so he was exposed to both sides and was able to use either side when needed
Can imagine as a Jedi gets older due to how incredibly brutal, an vicious, an taxing, Saber battles, even if they're just duels.. there comes a time when old Jedi just CAN'T handle fighting and combat tasks anymore. Even if THAT was their specialty and what they was known for in their prime an early years. Since we saw SO MANY old Jedi Masters an knights far from the front lines. Like the Librarian Jocasta, Yoda after awhile on his death bed meant his dueling days had to have been long done, an in this video just shows Kenobi's prime by the Original Trilogy was long over too. Imagine in some alternative verse even extremely powerful and gifted saber fighters like Mace and Anakin in some alternative reality eventually got way too old to effectively swing their blades anymore an basically became the next Sin Dralic or Jocasta Nu
I think Obi Wan should have been swapped with Boba Fett in the Obi Wan show. Imagine Boba Fett saving Leia only to hunt her down in the empire strikes back. It's like poetry, it rhymes. I do like having more Obi Wan but if feels like disney doesn't think their shows through
Even though this doesn't have anything to do with this particular video, for some reason watching it got me thinking, why didn't the clones turn on Anakin during order 66? I mean I know that he was technically Sith at that point, and was also technically Darth Vader, but I doubt the clones would have knows about that second one since it was established to have been a secret Vader wouldn't have wanted known. You couldn't even argue that because he wasn't a Jedi anymore that they didn't see him as a target, since they still went after Ahsoka and Maul, and neither of them were Jedi. Is it possible the Sith had built in immunity to the order? When Palatine issued order 66 to Rex he responded by saying "Yes, Lord Sidious". Rex shouldn't have know Palpatine was Sidious, not unless that information was built into the inhibitor chips. I wonder how the particulars of that work... Anyone got any thoughts on this?
Ah i am first Form 1: Shii-cho Form 2: Makashi Form 3: Soresu Form 4: Ataru Form 5: Shien & Djem so Form 6: Niman Form 7: Vaapad or Juyo And i said all of these by memory. Why did i do this... cuz i am bored
Really shows how Grievous would have easily killed Obi Wan if he didn't have plot armor One sword can block one sword, all Grievous had to do was force him to block and attack him with his three remaining free arms, easy
Hey Star Wars theory maybe I should know this but what is the form where you hold it over your head like mace and Palpatine did in one shot or Anakin vs count dooku, etc.
Age is a small factor, the biggest thing is, is that he didn't practice and keep physically fit after dueling vader on that moon and leaving him there.
Can you do a video on the lightsaber form 4: Ataru like you did for Soresu? I really like this video so much. Very informative and educational to star wars fans. BTW, Big fan of Form 4: Ataru. What is your favorite lightsaber form @Star Wars Theory ?
In my personal opinion, as good as Kenobi is at form 3. I think it is his downfall during SOME fights not all. In the phantom menace we see Obi Wan go against maul using the aggressive form 4 and show absolutely insane lightsaber combat feats. Then in episode 2 he uses form 3 and gets his ass handed to him by Dooku. In AOTC he didn't seem nearly as good as he was in TPM. By ROTS he used it perfectly against Anakin and Grevious because form 3 counter both of them but still gets whooped by Dooku. In Kenobi you see him switch between form 3, form 4, and even form 5 at some points. And he beats Vader.
What if Bo-Katan Kryze was a stronger and better fighter than Maul and Pre Visla combined, thus defeating Maul and/or Sabine Wren in combat for leadership of Mandalore and/or the Darksaber?
