Netflix series actually introduced plot and characters from the later books earlier and many setting was changed it's very different experience from reading the book, I would say it is worth watching, however I do wish they didn't simplified the plot and science, but Netflix only gave them 8 episodes to work on and what works for book might not works for a TV series. Also I highly recommend you to check out the 30 episodes Chinese TV series only based on the 1st book, it's highly accurate to the book, and they also fleshed out the rether flat characters from the book. However being faithful to the book also made the pacing extremely slow.

Since this video, I was made aware that the Netflix series does change a lot more than just nationalities so im not surprised you mention them taking liberties with the source material and adding characters as well.
