There are three big families of shapes in handbalancing, and the one every beginner wants first is the Straight Handstand.
I like to regroup Handstand Shapes in “families” for the student to understand that each shape within a given group is very close to any other.
There is the straight family, where both legs are vertical or close to vertical. The straight handstand, the V or Y shape, the half W, the L and the small straddle all belong to this family.
You can recognise them by the straight line that usually goes from the hands to the pelvis through the shoulders.
In your path towards a straight handstand, you need to master three shapes: the V, or Y shape, the half W, and the straight, feet together, I shape.
