The basic headlock is the factory-installed grappling move in humans when we fight. There are many different takes on how to escape many different configurations of headlocks. But if we are really looking at the most frequently occurring types of the headlock, these three responses are the most useful.

It’s always nice to see skilled instructors teach variations off things you think you know. For example the first two can be found in the Gracie Combatives lessons. But I’ve never seen that last one! Thanks for addressing such an important topic.

Thank you for that comment! And yeah, I show quite a bit that’s found in the Combatives and probably elsewhere in the Gracie University program. Rener and Ryron are brilliant and phenomenal teachers. I’ve been studying Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for almost 25 years now, so there is bound to be a lot of overlap. Thank you again!

I love your videos and the way you explain your technique so thoroughly and concisely. Even when the camera can't capture exactly what you're doing, you articulate the steps clearly so that it's still easy to track and understand the movements. Thanks for the excellent content!

More great information, Eli. Thank you. I had the disheartening experience of working something similar to this with a guy who outweighs me by about 80 pounds at my gym a couple of months ago, and I could not even budge. Definitely going to work in some drills for these with my training partners in the next couple of weeks. Cheers.

I've successfully used all of them in training minus the inclusion of punches, of course. The third one he shows is incorrect. He needs to bring his hips closer to the opponent, not further away.

What I do personally is when I see something I want to work on later is I copy the link of the video and text it to myself. If I just save it, sometimes I forget, but when I text myself, it tends to make me remember.

Superb teaching as always. Just a question: can you tell me something about the "standard" defense where you make a frame with your left arm and then put your left leg around the opponent's face? Is it also a valid defense? (I hope you understand which defense I am speaking. I do not know the exact name).

Absolutely. I still teach it to. It is very effective. Personally, I just feel like these 3 are the most versatile for the most common energies and the most useful.

Thanks for the video! just curious, in the 3rd scenario, what do you do if the person is leaning his chest down on you while his arms are lifting your neck up thus preventing head movement.
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 5 лет назад
If his base is compromised forward then you can bridge and turtle out the back. Whichever way his weight is going, there has to be a compromise in his structure or base somewhere. If you find it you can take advantage of it.

This is the most commont move they do in my gym. I spend a lot of time in this headlock and they squeeze their arms off, thinking they choke me or something. The problem is that neither it does anything, nor I can escape it...
