Jiu-Jitsu Escapes | 5 Ways Out of Headlocks on The Ground

The most common "grappling" move among untrained people in street fights is the headlock. While it is typically an unskilled behavior, it can still be dangerous and result in damage if not efficiently and technically addressed.
In this video, I show the most common types of headlocks on the ground along with efficient and relatively easy escapes for each (if you train them sufficiently).

This is the best Kesa Gatame escape video I have seen yet. I need options in case my initial escape attempts fail. This video provided those alternatives. My gripe with most "headlock escape" tutorials is how they're mostly dependent on the person on top not knowing any grappling techniques. Those techniques don't work on Judokas that will instinctively try to flatten you and press on your diaphragm with their weight. Anchoring that elbow to stay on your side is crucial. I'm glad that was emphasized. Good stuff. Thanks. I definitely will be applying what I learned here.

thanks for the vid! i literally just got tapped by a dude 60lb smaller than me (we started from the knees so no slamming) and i underestimated his strength/speed. Long story short he got me in the headlock with my arm trapped and I had no idea what to do so I had to tap. I legit thought I was just check mated with no options. Now when we rematch I'll be prepared :D

You should totally just sign up for a jiu jitsu class whether it’s Gi or no Gi. Just for the fun, exercise, friendships etc. it’s such an amazing atmosphere. I’m only like 8 classes in and i suck so bad but my Instagram is full of me praising that class haha You never know how much you’ll surprise yourself

Im taking notes on this! So many people quit in the beginning because they get treated like a grappling dummy and this is not necessary to learn. I'm not quite a year in and just starting to do positional light sparing with a partner at home. School it's just lessons still. Please do yourself a big favor and go do some jiu-jitsu. Just find the right school.

VERY well explained, everything is presented in a progressive, logical manner, anticipating questions or difficulties, and all in a cerebral-yet-accessible style that I happen to like very much. I really wish had had you as a teacher (in my youth, that is!). I have heard the grappling arts described as "physical chess", in which case, I would consider you a Grandmaster. Great channel, keep up the good - no, excellent - work!

The Kesa Getame escape works really well. I suck but I can do it to better guys. Kurt Osiander does a version where you almost spoon the guy, then turn your hips upward, bridge (bring their head to the floor) and turn. They feel pretty light once you load them so far north.

This is the first video I’ve found titled headlock escape that was actually an escape, the rest were headlock prevention techniques. I’m hoping to find one that is geared more towards two untrained fighters. Most untrained guys don’t headlock like that, they are most like gonna do the headlock from a position where both ppl are standing, facing each other and one is bent over in a headlock. I think the next most common would be where the guy doing the headlock is sitting and the guy in the headlock is behind him on all fours. Would like to see escapes from these scenarios

Nice video. I learned the same kind of defenses, but to see them done and explained by you is all a different thing. My usual noob question: to make it simple could I use pretty always the last defense? I think it should work also when your arm is free because you can wrap your opponent body anyway. Thanks

I've been trying to get out of this hold for 4 weeks. The instructor says "you down, you hold, go" and just let's us go at it with no instruction. I've tried bridging the chin/neck, trapping the head with my leg, rolling him straight back (almost popped a rib), and even shooting my left hand between his body and mine to wedge the choke, no go. That last one works a little but with my right arm trapped like in the 3rd demo, I damn near pulled my shoulder out. The higher ranked students seem just as clueless because they can't get out either except for maybe one or two who can either wiggle lose or power through it. I'm looking forward to testing these techniques out this weekend.
