I disappear is a weird one, Jason's last song with the band having a line that goes "do you bury me when I'm gone, do you teach me while I'm here, just as soon as I belong now it's time I disappear" is quite poetic, similar in sense to Pantera's last true song being "I'll Cast A Shadow (when I die)". It signified the end of an era... I always wonder where they would have gone had Jason stayed in the band, granted they had they given him the freedom to do the side-projects, and had refrained from touring to fight addictions and get rehab as Jason suggested (Jason's addiction being to painkillers after surgery) I think we would've gotten more "I Disappear, - Human, and or No Leaf Clover style songs... like a hybrid of the Load style with the heavier stuff on The Black Album. It's interesting, and a shame we'll never know
I really hate how that all went down. I feel like Jason was always digging to be someone they wouldn’t let him be from the beginning. I really stopped listening after Jason left. It sounded like noise after that.
@@1997LT1Camaro yeah Jason was the heart of the band, he gave his all every single time he went up there to work. You could see how frustrated he was in 99-00 as well (in both fan and pro-shot videos) where he'd shove camera guys, yell at the roadies, all of which was abnormal for him based on what people say. Probably the painkillers though tbh
@@1997LT1Camaro they simply just didn't like him or his style of playing not to mention all of their own addictions and family problems and trauma especially the cliff accident. It was just never meant to be and once Jason left it was good for them a new start and they were all getting cleaned up as well. Kinda ironic how you say they sounded like a bunch of "noise" since metal in itself is pretty much exactly that and represents it.
@@Godloveszazato be fair, after Cliff passed, Lars and James basically took creative control and left very little to Kirk or Jason to actually do beyond “play what we tell you to”
I Disappear is in the exact same category as Humans Being by Van Halen: a fracturing band producing a standalone movie tie-in track that is among their best work.
Man oh man, I have so much nostalgia for “I Disappear.” I was in high school the year it came out and that soundtrack was my jam that summer!! I Disappear was track two with a Limp Bizkit song being track one.
Since you talked about this song, any chance you’ll talk about St. Anger and the cut and unreleased songs that were made for the album, but never made it? That Presidio era and post-rehab era for James in 2002 and early 2003 is really interesting to me. Like Shadows of the Cross and Dead Kennedy Rolls, for example.
In fact, I have fallen into a St Anger rabbit hole lately, which gave at least 5 ideas for videos about it. The Preidio is part of that. But I hope to at least make one St Anger video while I’m alble
This is actually one of my all time favorite Metallica songs. It's a perfect marriage of heavy metal flavor with mainstream accessibility, and by far one of James's finest vocals.
i’m glad you finally covered i disappear topic! there’s something so catchy about that song, that it makes it my favorite metallica’s song ever.. i disappear is just on point. maybe it’s because it’s such a standalone in their career, maybe because of that simpliness, which proves that easy structure can still make a heavy piece of the song.. and man, the live versions from the year 2000 prove that it’s a real masterpiece (man james really gave all the energy to the „i’m gone” part..) i love this song so much, it’s never ever gonna bore me. although, i’m kinda sad for two things associated with this track: 1. that they haven’t used that napster leaked version as a final one (the choice to flip the soft and hard part was clever af but that leaked version sounded more polished) 2. that it’s the evidence of the new era, sound and record that we’re never going to hear since the presidio recordings were dumped (i hope they release them someday on possible st. anger deluxe set :() cheers man and thank you for that video once again
My favourite Metallica song. Groovy hard rock verse, melodic chorus, cool Kirk solo. Don't know why Metallica are embarrassed about it, they never play it, it seems.
@@AndriyVasylenko I hear a difference in the mastering, the video version is more compressed, you can tell by the snare decay and overall definition on the guitars (the meatiness if you will) + the whole thing just sounds fuller
another interesting "single" to look at was their collaboration with rapper Ja Rule and producer Swizz Beatz called "We did it again" To me, it is the song in Metallica's entire discography that sticks out as weird.
Love this song. When it came out I was excited for similar sounding songs on their next album, but instead we got St Anger. As for would St Anger have happened if Jason didn't leave? There's so many different things that could've happened, so many timelines, but in my opinion, St Anger wouldn't have happened. James wouldn't have gone to rehab and gotten help because Jason didn't leave, Jason would've grown more resentful, James would've kept drinking, the band would've imploded and not released anything else and maybe even James drank himself to death or at least ruined his body so he couldn't tour anymore. I hate that Jason left, his stage presence was amazing and back up vocals and sometimes lead vocals is surely missed, but I think it had to happen for James to realise he needed help and for the band to reset itself.
As for the very last point, I have always wondered for years what the alternate reality might have been considering what Jason asked for and what ended up happening. We've all seen the initial interviews. He asked for a year to do Echo Brain, Lars and James were not willing to take that time off from the band. They wanted to get in the studio and make an album, but with James ultimately going to rehab for 9+ months and the bulk of the St. Anger writing/recording not occurring until after that, who know what would have happened if James and Lars had this perspective at the time when Jason first requested in 2000 what would have happened.
Gonna binge watch some of your videos, your channel is still in my hearth but i never have enough time to sit and watch this videoes with a clear mind. Btw, you seems rather good here, hope things aren't getting thougher there.
I dissappear was the first Metallica release I bought in 2000, and I loved the song. I played it over and over again on an 8 hour long train trip. I still think its a good song. Very underrated. Not better than the older material though.
One thing I noticed in the video is that at 2:19 you can see Hetfield's got no A string on his guitar. Guessing they didn't bring a spare up there with them...
you guys make way big of a deal of this snare. This kind of snare was really popular with alot of bands back then. Queens of the stone age were using this style. Before that you had Korn, and so on .
I haven't seen any of your videos since the very beginning of the war. I'm really happy that you seem to be doing well and back to making these excellent videos.
Great review and analysis as always. When you point out similarities and relationships to others songs, I always think, yeah, why didn't I make that connection?
So glad to see you again!!! I’m subscribed to so many channels that I sometimes forget about some RU-vid channels. I thought of you and your channel about a week ago. I was actually really worried about you knowing you live in Ukraine. At least our Congress finally passed the military aid for your country! So happy to see you still making videos 🎉
This was the song (and its video) that got me into Metallica. Simple as that. So it's quite special to me and lots of memories come along with it. Anyway I agree with the foreshadowing of the St. Anger sound but I can't hide I find it also too polished in a way that it had to adhere to a mainstream movie soundtrack's standards and thus it sounds almost like a pop-rock tune to me. You can tell it by the phasing effects during the instrumental breaks and the slight fade-ins before those rests that come immediately after them. It doesn't have the appeal of the classics but it's a peculiar song for sure.
If I remember correctly, didn't Metallica worked an album in like 1999-2000, and then someone broke into their studio and stole the computer that had everything on it? Then James later said that it wasn't a major loss as they weren't entirely happy with how the recording was going with it?
On a side note, here's to REALLY HOPING, that they release another single in the upcoming 2-3 years, so we don't have to wait for another 7-8 years for new album, which may not even come (they'll be late 60s then). I think the last time they released an unrelated single was in 2014 ( Lords Of Summer).
I’m sure people have said this a million times in these comments already but Jason does not play on I Disappear he was just featured in the video. Bob said it himself
Awww takes me back to rocking out to the MI:2 soundtrack (Mission Impossible 2) back when movies used to release a compilation album of all different artists (usually original songs, so wild) Limp Bizkit’s best song imo was also on that soundtrack, dang those were good times y’all!
I had been a huge Metallica nerd for a few years by the time this came out. I was underwhelmed by the two originals on S&M and was hoping I Disappear would be some sort of return to pre-Load form for the band but didn’t hold out a lot of hope. I was still disappointed when it clearly wasn’t anything worth listening to. I can pretty much pinpoint this time as when I gave up on them and started getting into heavier and more interesting metal. I’ll still always appreciate Metallica for getting me into metal and inspiring me to play guitar, and I’m going to see them live too. But this song will always be a sad memory for me of when I realized my then favorite band just wasn’t ever coming back, so to speak.
@@AarturoScguess I should’ve mentioned I was like 11-13 at the time so it was all new to me, even the old stuff, so I was still a bit naive to that part.
"Would St. Anger have happened if Jason stayed with Metallica" is an interesting question. There probably would have been an album made if Jason had stayed. But what we got as St. Anger was born out of a lot of things, like the James going to rehab and the lack of time the band had to complete the album. But Jason staying would have changed the dynamic of the "band therapy" that they also went through. Jason should have been a part of that but from the few interviews I saw, did not seem like he would have approached that with the same open mind as the other members did. Apart from some of the James/Lars dynamic, Jason and his role in the band would have benefited from that therapy. He might have eventually gotten what he wanted had he stayed, and increased role or at least allowed to express himself outside of Metallica. Or he could have been completely closed off to the therapy, and that eventually splits the band, and there's no album ever made. Really hard to say.
St anger was basically born out of the frustration of Jason leaving and the animosity between James and lars of just 20 years of straight up rage & anger just being released. Which 1. Almost tore the band apart and of course as you mentioned James checking himself into rehab. Which is ironic cause when Metallica kicked Dave out of the band. That sent Dave in a direction of alcohol and drugs which actually briefly killed him till they brought him back to life and it took him multiple trips to rehab to eventually clean himself and this was exactly what James going through just not as drastic.
St. Anger is simply born out of Metallica Copying style of a song on Queens of the Stone Age Song for the Deaf. It's Called song for the Deaf listen for your self ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lXGcr7gfU-I.html You are making it way to romantic how the sound of the album came to be, and the style of the riffs.
It sure if this was commented on or not yet, pretty sure the riff would work badass with this song would be “broken beat & scarred” same tempo, pretty sure they came up with that riff after st anger though. Would be interesting to hear that riff & “ I disappear “ hybrid
their three 1999/2000 songs were great, I would have loved a whole album in that style. Regarding This song not fitting Load: To me, it was a continuation of " Better Than You"
@@NoxWyatt Yeah it’s pretty obvious they were written with the orchestra in mind and I’m not a load and reload fan but maybe an album in between with songs like Minus Human ? I know there’s a whole generation nearly that Load and Reload was “their” first Metallica albums and some people love everything they did. I got into metal via the Black Album and I’m in the love everything up to and including the Black Album and think Death Magnetic is better than anything since the black album until today, never really got into the last couple albums.
You're right about the St.Anger snare sort of debuting on "I Disappear", however as you pointed out I think the reason people didn't react to it as harshly is that the songwriting was better in I Disappear.
Not to mention, it's the song that started the whole Napster thing. Metallica discovered that a demo of "I Disappear", a song set to be released with the Mission: Impossible II soundtrack, was being played on the radio.
It's an interesting question whether Jason or Bob Rock played bass on the final version. He wasn't available during pre-production, and I'm wondering if that was the first major crack in the band. Here's the quote from Bob Rock: "When we did the 'Mission Impossible' song 'I Disappear' [in 2000], Jason [Newsted, bass] didn't show up to pre-production, so I played bass just so we can rehearse and get it. "So, when Jason - whatever happened, that happened - they said, 'We can't get somebody, we haven't even started, can you just play bass while we figure out what we're doing?'. "That's how it happened, by accident. I mean, I'm a guitar player, bass player anyway, you just play the riff, basically, for the most part. I thought it was easy, but it fucking ain't."
Wow! That song sure came and went. Having the mission impossible theme as a central part of the melody really guaranteed it to remain a product of its time.
For a song written exclusively for a movie soundtrack that never made into onto a studio album ... I DISAPPEAR received a lot of air play on Rock radio and still does today. It's also been played near 100 times live in concert to date.
this was one of the first metallica songs i heard cycled on the radio and that really got my attention. i must have been around ten when it came out. then, i became a regular metallica junkie a few years later when i picked up the guitar.
To this day I regret not buying that Metallica T-Shirt with them as cartoon characters except a sign on the bass player's face that went: *HEAD COMING SOON* 😂
Actually, I Disappear was a song that got me into Metallica and into metal in general. I was 12 when it came out, and I didn't listen to metal before, the heaviest stuff I listened back in the day were bands like the Scorpions, Queen, etc.
I watched on MTV the making of this video, it was awesome. I remember one of the guys (probably Lars) saying that the video was funded by the film, so i guess that's why they went all in with all the expensive pyro and stunts. Greetings from Perú 🤘
The definite edition of I Disappear for me will be the live version from the MTV Movie awards 2000. Its awesome! There is so much more fire, urgency and sharpness to it. Despite a guitar solo, it sounds full of energy and overall its "heavier". I always thought the studio version sounded muddy and flat, robbing the songs potential. It sounds halfway there, like a demo in good progress.
Just checked out that version, good stuff. There was a comment thread about why that performance sounds so good - because it was for a live TV event, MTV would have had the final say on how it was mixed. Just a theory, but it's a decent one.
@@Skeletroy Its a fantastic mix. Sharp, precise, heavy. All it needs is a solo in that riff section before the furious fast finale. It is screaming for a solo. I think too in general that the lyrics were always a bit unfinished, repeating themselves. But live like that, I dont care because the band sound so great. I think too, that the studios grubby tone and muddy production lended more into the initial St. Anger sessions. The song was done not long 'fore The Presido writing sessions begun.
Great vid! The leaked version is so good when the last clean chorus transforms into the heavy ending, gives me chills every time and I wish It was available in top quality. Also the boyband performance at MTV is so cool, love it! 😎
To me, the music video version sounds lower, and a little closer to Reload. Where as the single version reminds me of the production on Death Magnetic - more of an ear piercing quality.
Great video! Can you please do one on Metallica's song We Did It Again featuring Swiss Beats and Ja Rule from the Biker Boyz soundtrack? It's such an oddity and there doesn't seem to be a lot of information on it.
To me I Disappear, No Leaf Clover and Minus Human sound like they could be from Load and Reload. The early 2000s was a limbo for Metallica. The Nu Metal scene took them by storm. I think they were a bit overwhelmed and ended up making St Anger. And the fact is that Metallica never regained their massive popularity. Don’t get me wrong they’re still the biggest metal/rock band in the world. But, before Nu Metal Lars used to be on TMZ and MTV Awards skits about Napster. They were massive.
I think that the worst thing I ever thought about I Disappear was that it was a little ordinary. At this point, I was actually pretty cool with Load and Reload and even got a bootleg of the 2 new tracks from S & M and loved them. I thought that No Leaf Clover was pretty kickass. I can't say the same for St. Anger. I was hyped to finally hear Metallica's new album and I even got the weird special edition release with the CD on one side and the DVD on the other. This was the last Metallica album I bought. I have gotten to listen Death Magnetic by other means and was not that impressed. It was better than SA, but still kinda not great. I did stream Hardwired and there was some good stuff on there, but I haven't listened to anything newer... Oh, I listened to James yelling something about being a table. Yeah, I tried to listen to Lulu, but nah.
@@Top10Dylan I gotta disagree. I did really like the black album. Then again. This was my first CD I ever owned and I liked it before I got into metal.
I've always liked I Disappear because it came out around the time I first got into Metallica and thus was one of their first songs I listened to. I think in watching this video, I listened to it more today than I have done in the last 20something years, but 16-year-old me thought it was a cool tune
7:59 I think it's because of how they recorded it. I Disappear easily still thr analog recording. St. Anger they went to digital, so the snare may have popped out more because of that
I do like I disapear, though I like most of St. Anger too. I remember when St. Anger released and everyone was really hyped, it feels like the hate came after the hype had settled and people started to compare old and new. Just like Star Wars episode 1, hype, then hate. Maybe I'm wrong, most probaly I am. I disappear really reminds of those good old summers when summers actuallt mattered. Be well Andriy!
I wish Metallica had followed through with this train of thought, and also allowed Jason to do his own thing for a year and come back refreshed. I think that we’d be seeing a totally different Metallica by now. And one that released more than 4 albums in 20 years.
this song was absolutely kick ass, so sad how the following years turned up because if they made an album revolving around the presidio sound and i disappear with jason, probably would have been a bigger hit than load and reload imo
To me Metallica is a really good metal band that is carried to legendary status thanks to what it used to be, or rather the people they used to have. Once Dave Mustaine got kicked and Cliff Burton passed they lost all their legendary touch when crafting new songs. Still an great metal band and I Disappear was proof of them still being able to craft amazing songs.
they got older, that its all that it is. You're creative touch its much fresher when you are exploring in the beginning. It's not because of loss of member like Dave or Cliff. Motorbreath is all James. Master of Puppets is more or less James and Kirk. and so on.
I Disappear is a mega CLASSIC! It was a song that felt perfect after ReLoad and I thought it was a taste of things to come... sadly that was not the case. Instead we got St.Anger train wreck, and then an even bigger train wreck with Death magnetic. And at this point I lost that close connection to the band I used to have. Not until Hardwired got released did my spirit start to reconnect with Metallica once more. and With 72 Seasons I felt that finally the album I had been waiting for was here! And the Metallica vibe has come full circle. 72 seasons sounds more like it should have been the album they released after I Disappear! I am just so happy that I have reconnected with Metallica current and not just their past. My fave Metallica albums: LOAD Justice Black Album ReLoad 72 Seasons
I tend to think that without St. Anger, we don't covet that era nearly as much. It was just such a pile of shit, that, in comparison, many of those songs automatically step up the ladder.
the video looks like each in an famous film, the mustang bullitt, the aeroplane north by northwest, the other two im not too sure about both kind of gave me Matrix vibes, with the locationof the band in the film its self.
I was in grade 8 when I Disappear came out. I was so excited that Metallica dropped a banger at a time when my friends were listwning to korn, limp bizkit and kid rock haha
