How much money would the first overall pick in the NFL Draft go for if a team tried to sell it? At the 1982 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins really wanted Texas defensive lineman Kenneth Sims. He was projected to go first overall. The only problem? The New England Patriots had the first pick. So Washington tried the unusual move of buying it from the Pats. This is the story behind the time a team tried to buy the first pick in the draft.

Whew! Redskins dodged a bullet there! Everything turned out fine in the end. Redskins won the Superbowl that season and the next year they had the last choice in the first round and they used it to pick a CB from a small Texas college, some guy named Darrell Green - I hear had a good career

And later on in that Draft they got a future great DE named Charles Mann. So glad they didn't get Sims
@Lawomenshoops
@Lawomenshoops 3 года назад
So even if they got Simms they could have won the SB in 82. And they would still have drafted Green the next year. They would have only lost money. Not draft picks or players.
@johnliberty3647

@@Lawomenshoops Sims may have even thrived under Richie Pettibones defensive scheme. Sims was not awful just not worth a first overall pick. But If the Redskins drafted Sims in 1982 then Charles Mann might not have been drafted in 1983 or not gotten that playing time against the Rams that year where he demonstrated he was starter material.

Different sport entirely, but maybe the craziest trade offer I've ever heard of is when in 1979, the Detroit Pistons offered to trade literally their entire roster to the Lakers for Magic Johnson lol

As soon as you said 1982, I knew they must have tried to buy Kenneth Sims. Talk about dodging a bullet. All they needed to do was let Manley develop. Dave Butz was already pretty good.

Washington drafted DE Charles Mann, who had a much better career than Sims!!

Sims was more suited to a 4-3 alignment and would have been a terror paired up with Dave Butz , leaving Dexter Manley free; Neal Olkewicz would have been an All-Pro - instead, he was mispositioned at NG and languished in New England....

teams should be able to trade draft picks for cap space. for example, lets say your team has no cap , some other team has 30 million under. your team could sell a draft pick to that other team in exchange to pick up whatever amount of cap space they agree upon. say , give me 10 million of your cap space and i'll give you a 4th round draft pick,
@TheBadGuy15
@TheBadGuy15 3 года назад
Eh, I just don’t see teams doing that. That $30m stacks up and converts into next year. So $10m could technically cost you $20m the next year. That $20m could be used to sign a superstar.

Given how much of a bust Kenneth Sims was, plus how the Sullivan family went broke 6 years later...they might have regretted the choice they made.

If they sold the #1 overall pick fan's would have abandoned the team forever. That would be franchise suicide.
@saracarlos1

@@Wallyworld30 - I was living in Boston back then and nobody cared about the Patriots, most of the stadium was empty, and people only talk about the Celtics and the Red Sox. Now, of course everyone claims to be a lifetime Patriots fan, but only when they started winning that people cared.

Worse. Clowney has had a few moments. Sims was just there. Good enough to keep a job but never actually good. The second he messed up, he was gone. Wasn't worth the trouble when there were 10 free agents who could do the job as well.

It really is a great question as to whether the #1 pick could be "bought" from another team. Adjusting what happened in 1982 to today's salaries, you are right--It could be worth 100+ million dollars. Would that be worth it? Makes for a great hypothetical and discussion/debate.

If there were a 2013 or 2014 type class I could see it being worth 100 mil. This class probably 250-300 mil and maybe more if you account for having to deal with fan blowback.

You would think teams would drafted these (Blue Chip) players later. Most of the time you here oh he’s a solid top 5 pick. Oh he’s the 1st round pick. Those usually turn out to be the biggest bust. Washington was smart.

it can’t realistically happen. unless they would trade cap space. let’s say the pats buy it for 100 million. if the jags get an extra 20 million (and the pats lose 20 million) in cap space for each of the next 5 years, it may be reasonable

The 'weirdness' of this story is entirely a matter of perspective. In other sports, especially outside North America, drafts are non-existent and transfer fees are a completely routine part of trading players, happening far, far more often than exchange of players.
