Last week the trailer for Greta Gerwig's Little Women was released, to mostly positive reactions. This will mark the eighth time the classic story has been adapted for the big screen and the third adaptation released in the last three years It begs the question of what exactly it is about this particular story which has kept readers and viewers so captivated for almost two centuries.

I say twice in the video that the story has been around for over two centuries, when it was supposed to be *almost* two centuries. Apparently I didn't pick up the mistake in the recording or editing. My bad!

I think it says something about this story that centuries later, we are still talking about it and making endless adaptions of it.

Yes. That Hollywood would rather waste money making the same movies over and over, rather than risk making anything new different or artistic. TV has changed so much in the last 50 years, and movies barely have. I can't think of a single book by a person of colour that has been made into a movie in the last 20 years. But there are so many tv shows! TV has become more nuanced, more diverse in terms of body type, neurodiverence, race, gender and sexuality. Where the heck is that growth in the movie industry?

This was a happy coincidence. Stumbled over your "Top 10 Character-centric Buffy episodes" due to recommendations, liked it, wanted to check out your other vids and found this one. Fitting, as I've just finished the novel today. (Or technically part 1. The translation I read didn't include the "Good Wives" part). I agree that what I liked about the novel was the sisters and their relationships towards one another. They felt real,. Flawed but still charming, and sympathetic in their struggles to grow as people. Plus the slice-of-lifeesque storytelling (even though it had more dramatic moments) was very pleasant and comforting to read. It was a sweet book. I do disagree with you however that "the book is never overly preachy or moralising". There were a lot of chapters where I went "Oh, no, here we go again" when, often the mother, started preaching moral values or lessons in a very "on-the-nose" way. Still, I stuck around thanks to the characters and the fact that I like Louisa May Alcott's language. And your video has helped me better understand the universal, and therefore timeless, appeal of the novel.

I love this video and I love the Little Women book. This is a book of a caliber which could be used more in today's writing and I mean that in more ways than one. Since you played everything out so nicely, why don't you make videos of the March sister, which focus deeper on one sister? Like you did for the Halliwell sisters...

Maybe Jo wouldn’t have been so vindictive is Amy hadn’t BURNED HER MANUSCRIPT, I rest my case.

And for such petty reasons as well. For not getting to go to the play with Jo and Laurie, a play that she was going to get to go to see NEXT WEEK anyways. Talk about disproportionate retribution. And even if Amy is remorseful later on, she gets petulant when she isn't forgiven right away. It is pretty unsympathetic. I liked that Jo struggles to control her temper later on in the book, but Amy doesn't get called out for her rotten behaviour enough in that chapter (hell, she get's more called out by her mother after the pickled lime incident because "she did break the rules, after all", even if they agree that the teacher shouldn't have hit her. But breaking that stupid rule compared to ruining something a loved one has worked on for a long time, I know which one I think is the worse offence).

I've only seen the modern movies of this story. I am forever saying to myself or my family "Butter is a divinity!"

I couldn't watch the movie, they made Amy the main character, she does not deserve it. It's Jo and Meg's story first.
