The Timeline of Mad Max Doesn't Make Sense 

Miller himself said anyway that Fury Road is a soft reboot of the Max timeline. Also that each film isn't in some chronological order. The idea is that the films are retellings of peoples stories of thier meetings with "the road warrior"

I love the fact that Miller doesn't give a fuck about nerds on the Internet trying to figure out timelines. The MCU has broken people's brains and has given people ocd about this stuff.

That's wrong. Mad Max 1 takes place after 1985 You can see the year 1985 on the MFP signage. The Collapse doesn't refer to the Nukes it refers to the resource wars the preceded the nukes. Roughly, Mad Max takes place around 1987, Road Warrior in 1990, and thunderdome takes place in 2005. Technically Fury Road as a Sequel would take place somewhere around 2015.

To be fair the timeline never made total sense to begin with in regards to "The Fall" Like weren't the main characters such as Max, Imortan Joe and other antagonists alive before? Meanwhile the oceans have evaporated in that time? At this point Tom Cruise style ocean snatching aliens make the most sense except they couldnt care less about humanity, or atleast Australia lol

I know that this doesn't change the fact the the timeline is weird but mad max 1 takes place around 1984 based on a date on the road sign in the opening of the film

I think you’re confusing movie time with the dates that they were released. They were films. The timeline now has to work back from the latest film shown.

45 years after the collapse is nothing else but 45 years since the Mad Max 1 was done (1979. - 2014. = 45 years). The trailer for Furiosa movie was not made by WB or George Miller, but by other company

Mad Max 1 is Max's backstory. While 2 and 3 are campfire stories about the heroic road warrior. Also, it is confirmed that Fury Road was a soft reboot, so I guess they changed the years somehow.

'Max' of Fury Road is not 'Max' of Road Warrior. 'Mad Max' is a title.

For all people theorising . Fury road is a reboot so Fury road and furiosa don't take place in the same universe as the original trilogy. So the timeline are completely different even though similare events happened in both universes.

Max from Fury Road isn’t the same Max from Mad Max. Mad Max is supposed to be a sort of folk hero that embodies an individual every few decades whenever the weak need them. Miller has already discussed this at length.

I heard that Max in Fury Road isn’t the same as the Mel Gibson Max, but rather the grown adult version of the young boy in Road Warrior, which would make this timeline then make more sense. However, with Miller calling Fury Road a soft reboot, I don’t consider them to be sharing the timeline.

I always assumed that FURIOSA took place after ROAD WARRIOR, but before THUNDERDOME.

What doesn't add up to me is that in Furiosa, when Furiosa(who is around the same age as Max) is a child, the world is presented in the same messed up, beyond repair wasteland it was in Mad Max 2 and up. Yet in the original Mad Max, the world was still somewhat grounded and was more dystopian than post apocalyptic. There were towns(not just names given to a community but actual TOWNS) with buildings(not caves), an actual police station, a real hospital, roads, grass and trees, stores......you know...a town. Max had a house. Yet in flashback segments of Furiosa(set before the original Mad Max)...the world is already a barren wasteland.

Fury road and furiosa are a different timeline than the original trilogy confirmed by Miller, he said its a soft reboot where similar things happened but he prefers to call it a revisiting because similar things happen but it is a reboot timeline and is not related to the original trilogy

So the timelines are totally fine if you view them as they intend where some events from the first films do happen but the fury road is set in like 2050. The timeline only really becomes an absolute mess with the tie in comic book that tried to tie thubderdome to fury road but unintentionally made all timelines make absolutely 0 sense. The other interesting thing is little bits left in the script that were apart of the original 90s version that was supposed to have Gibson but got stuck in development hell.

You need to read the comics as that is also in the timeline you are mentioning which does help

I say fury road is 45 years after the collapse. Mad Max is clearly set after the collapse but before things completely go to shit. So let’s say that’s 15 years after (the police headquarters was completely run down-basically an abandoned building). Max is 25. We add 35 years and he’s 55 in Fury Road. If Furiosa is 30 years old, she never saw any world but the completely post-apocalyptic one.

I hope that in "Mad Max: Wasteland" we get a clear explanation of the timeline. Maybe introduce an old Rocketansky, played by Gibson, and a younger "Max" played by Hardy. Maybe there was some passing of the torch or tutelage between the two, and thats why new Max has the interceptor

45 years could just be when the initial societal breakdown started. Governments were destroyed, wars in other countries, etc., but local forces like Max's kept societies going in small clusters. So the first Mad Max movie could be like 35 years after the initial collapse, things get a whole lot worse in the next few years as seen in Road Warrior and followed by nuclear exchanges, Furiosa being taken from the Green Place 10 years after that 45 years after the initial collapse, maybe around the time of Thunderdome, and Fury Road 10 years after that. It means Max grew up in one of the last vestiges of society, loses his family at 20, then by the time we see him in Fury Road he's 40. And I'm guessing all the older people we see in Furiosa and Fury Road left the towns and cities early on, before even the first movie.

Me and my brother believe that he is cursed to walk the Earth to see to the end of humanity. And Furiosa made the same deal.

Everybody needs to know that the Mad Max you saw in the 2015 movie was not Mel Gibson Mad Max it was the little boy in Road Warrior all grown up. You’re welcome.

The timeline doesn't make sense because its not supposed to. The idea is that the Mad Max is someone whose spoken of after the fact like an urban legend of the wasteland

The comments I’ve read here are wild🤦‍♂️ Even the first Max movie is set after the fall of civilization, Max is just from a town with laws and power and police force, the MFP…. When Max hunts down his child’s killers he leaves off into the waste land, there are literally road signs in the movie telling you this… Mad Max 2: Max is out being the “Road Warrior”, he doesn’t try to leave the because he’s a coward, he refuses to fight at first because they’re all just raiders fighting for gas…. At some point after the Road Warrior the bombs fall then Fury Road happens, then Thunder Dome after that…. George Miller is intentionally loose on his story telling, he sorta screwed up the timeline of the bombs dropping with Fury Road I was always to the understanding that part of the worlds governments dropping the bombs was trying to deal with the anarchy that the world had become🤷‍♂️ he kinda screwed that direction up

The history men (the ones that have tattoos with stories all over their body) are telling this stories, and they are totally not reliable, The comics show you that and this new Furiosa film kind of makes it clear, they don’t know the whole truth.

I mean the MPF seems kinda like a last resort police force. And the villains are some of the most cruelest. They have no agenda but to make the world burn and spread chaos..

The timeline never made sense to begin with. Mad Max Roadwarrior has this post apocalyptic world with complete savages and no civilization but it only takes place 3 years after mad max 1 which society and civilization was dying but very much still there. Not enough time has passed since the end of the world for any of these movie to be as apocalyptic as they are

The Mad Max movies are Gospels not a story. Read the Gospels in the New Testament and nothing makes sense. 3 of the movies, at least, are apocryphal stories told in a future past tense. You're just basic.
