Hahaha, I really hope you meant song instead of a beautiful sounding "53 year old dong" Lmfao haha sorry I still laugh at the same silly sh#t today that I did when I was 12 .
When this song was released the nation was in the middle of a civil rights struggle and poised to begin a Viet Nam war struggle. I was in college and I remember that the first time I heard "Your sons and your daughters, they're beyond your command" a cold chill came over me and for the first time I identified with a Movement. Now I am way beyond being a parent with offspring beyond my command, I am a grandad and old school in most things but with a still-strong belief in individual freedom. The circle goes 'round and 'round....
In in the same boat. I enlisted in the Air Force as a medic to avoid the army. I had four sons. I told them if they ever enlisted in the army I’d shoot them in the foot, that I had served during Vietnam, I knew about war, kids don’t, and I wasn’t going to risk them finding out. Luckily for me they were never predisposed toward the juvenile lure of killing people for their country. Not one war since WWII has either been justified or won. Never fight a war against people who don’t have a mortgage and car payments.
Great job! I am a 73 year old woman, and was just this morning thinking of this song as an apt expression of what is happening now, in 2020. I remember when Bob Dylan came out with this song as a young man. I also lived through the 1968 riots in Detroit, and the incidents at Kent State University. I see a lot of similarities to what is happening today. That you, as young people, would pick up this 53-year-old song has made me feel more relevant in today's world. I am going to play it on my front porch for the neighbors tonight. Thank you!
And more so, it's just a prelude of what's to come next. Look at the East. War is upon us. I really do hope I am not right but Putin could turn out to be The Third Anti-Christ of which the prophesies have foretold us long ago by Nostradamus. And if it's true it's gonna be bad...for everyone. I was listening to ''Eve of Destruction'' just the other day and well...we are standing on the edge of the end of civilization if Putin gets his way. He will destroy everything in his hunger for power.
They sound like S&G B4 they got tired of each other. I just seen Josh & Carson in Portland, Maine last night and the smiles and joy in performing are there. Wonderful to see and hear.
@David Wang Well, I have heard Bob himself play it pretty close to this version, as you know he always changes his versions to keep it interesting, for himself and for the crowd. And I wouldn't call this "swing".
Sitting here three years later and still in awe of this masterful interpretation of this masterful matching of lyric and melody. One of the greatest recordings of all time in my opinion.
More Bob covers please. We need young guys like you to teach the younger generation just how damn good Dylan was. Too many people don't even know who he is these days and thats a shame. There was a time Bob was bigger than the Beatles! These younger kids need to hear this mans words
@David Wang jesus christ. the whole point of music is that it means something to different to different people. if this is what he thinks is the best, then that’s opinion and just as valid as yours.
The solo that Josh does makes this song thrilling as ever before! Its great to witness a new talented generation that makes these songs young and alive again!
I can't stop listening to your covers. I've been stuck in the repetitive classic music like The Beatles, Johnny Cash, The Clash and more, but now I've realised there is hope for our generation.
I always kind of liked Dylan, but I was never really sure what he was singing. Now I can finally hear and fully appreciate the lyrics. Maybe he deserved that Nobel price after all. Please do more Dylan. 👍
@David Wang then you must think Dylan doesn't get himself too cause he has sung versions similar to this one and others so different you probably think heretic to the original. If you don't know that then you must not know anything about Dylan.
I've lost count of how many times I've heard this cover. Hits me like a hammer every time. Straight out fantastic, the lead vocals, the changing backing vocal and great guitar work!
I absolutely love it when you two team up !!! Both are very gifted at delivering a songs lyrics so that the lines fall on the heart and well as the ear. This song, just speaks so loudly for the events of today. Things ARE changing. It takes a brave person to stand up for what's right when others around them are shouting for what's wrong. Setting all my "political" babble aside.......really, I just love the music the two of you create !
It’s 3.25 am Central Ontario 🇨🇦 ‘Sposed to be sleeping.. flipping through RU-vid and I can never pass you guys by,without listening..like many I’m a huge Dylan fan...This recording rocks..and takes me back to a time when music mattered.. Thank-you,the torch has been passed 🇨🇦
These guys are amazing, as always. Musicians' musicians. Rare, rare talent - spontaneous and exciting collaboration. Spectacular and authentic performance of this classic, faithful to Dylan, especially the extra bars in the extended phrases which Dylan wrote, but some don't sing. Brilliant, guys! You two were made for each other.
By far the best version. That harmony cuts through and is absolutely superb, should have been on the original record. Plus, the energy is palpable and adding a solo really gives it life.
I laugh when the wee man there panics and the smile on your face! Fantastic! He plays lead superb and the composition is great! He will stop fretting so much(excuse the pun) with experience! Awesome guys!
You guys are carrying the Torch for the new generation. Thank you for loving these old but still amazing songs, and for bringing them back to life with class.
@David Wang the war between Light and Darkness has gone on since the beginning of Time itself. Don't lose hope. The glass is 1/2 full. Join the Light! These guys rocked that song...and captured the spirit of the original.
With your masterful cover Dylan's lyrics couldn't be in better hands. You guys amaze me with your talent and brave forays into a variety of genres. Keep it up and I'll keep watching!!
Honestly guys, you are one of the only things keeping me from failing during this whole COVID crisis. I haven't seen my family for over year because we live in different countries and due to travel restrictions in place I haven't even seen my new born nephew. When I am feeling rock bottom you pick me up. That is something special. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you do.
I literally couldn’t breathe listening to this. This was the most beautiful effortless Dylan cover I’ve ever heard and I’m honest to god speechless. Wow.
My goodness. I am so excited about finding your music. I love the harmonies, bluegrass in there, all fun and upbeat songs. Seriously I just love everything I hear.
Guys, you positively nailed this, and with vocal harmonies, too. Thanks. I wish my "late" cousin was still alive so he could hear this, he was such a Dylan fan. Hats off to you two..
10K+ likes, it's obvious from the 1st strums why these two are so popular on RU-vid. Wonderful, fresh, traditional and skilled version of a timeless classic. Thank you boys, Carry On. wishing you both the very best in whatever directions you go.
I don't know of a better version of this song, anywhere. The vocals are absolutely top-shelf, great. The guitar work is the same -- professional, beautiful, tasteful, all good things. Keep it up guys! MORE!!!
Dylan would be more than proud to hear you guys do his songs. They are timeless and you make them sound awesome. Keep the good work. There are many more Dylan songs that I'm sure you guys would do and post. Thank you for the music.
Come gather 'round, people Wherever you roam And admit that the waters Around you have grown And accept it that soon You'll be drenched to the bone If your time to you is worth savin' And you better start swimmin' Or you'll sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin' Come writers and critics Who prophesize with your pen And keep your eyes wide The chance won't come again And don't speak too soon For the wheel's still in spin And there's no tellin' who That it's namin' For the loser now Will be later to win For the times they are a-changin' Come senators, congressmen Please heed the call Don't stand in the doorway Don't block up the hall For he that gets hurt Will be he who has stalled The battle outside ragin' Will soon shake your windows And rattle your walls For the times they are a-changin' Come mothers and fathers Throughout the land And don't criticize What you can't understand Your sons and your daughters Are beyond your command Your old road is rapidly agin' Please get out of the new one If you can't lend your hand For the times they are a-changin' The line it is drawn The curse it is cast The slow one now Will later be fast As the present now Will later be past The order is rapidly fadin' And the first one now Will later be last For the times they are a-changin'
Totally beautiful, guys. Couldn't help but sing along, without remembering the lyrics. My late cousin would've been a fan of yours, since he was a Dylan devotee. (RIP Ronnie)
In response to people who copy-paste lyrics from random sources and post them as comments, it's worth first pointing out that any cover worth a damn doesn't follow the original to the letter. In that spirit, here's a better transcription of the lyrics as sung in this interpretation, aligned by rhyme and not letter-length, and with minor annotations WRT differences in lyrics in the harmonies: (I apologize for line-wraps, if that was the reason for the shortness of the lines in the other example(s), but it needs to be done.) Come gather 'round, people, wherever you roam, And admit that the waters around you have grown, And accept, soon, you'll be drenched to the bone If your time to you is worth savin' Then you better start swimmin', 'fore you sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin' Come writers and critics who prophesize with your pen And keep your eyes wide, the chance won't come again And don't speak too soon, for the wheel's still in spin And there's no tellin' who that it's namin' For the loser now will be later to win For the times they are a-changin' ^^^ [Josh sings "*And* the times" here] Come senators, congressmen; please heed the call Don't stand in the doorway, don't block up the hall For he who gets hurt will be he who has stalled There's a battle outside and it's raging It'll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls For the times they are a-changin' Come mothers and fathers throughout the land And don't criticize what you can't understand Your sons and your daughters: they're beyond your command Your old road rapidly aging Please get out of the new one if you can't lend a hand For the times they are a-changin' Well the line it is drawn; the curse it is cast The slowest now will later be fast As the present now will soon be the past The order is rapidly fading And the first one[s] now will later be last [only Josh sings the (s)] For the times they are a-changin' For the times they are a-changin'
When I was sick and feeling really bad for almost three weeks I found this song. When I first heard it, I loved it. Then I went to check out the channel that uploaded the video. I will never forget the day when I found out about Josh Turner and The Other Favorites. You guys gave me inspiration and motivation to start playing acoustic guitar more and more, and I even customized my old guitar... Now I can't go a day without listening to you, and you should know that I really enjoy your music and you make me really happy. By the way, I'm a fourteen-year-old guitarist from Croatia and I used to play only electric guitar, but because of you, now I spend the most of my day on my acoustic guitar. Thank you so so much for playing such amazing music and motivating me! P.S. I would love a toutorial on this song ;)
Oh god, this is outstanding. Thank you very much for this video. And as said by many, this song has never been more relevant than now, but that is the greatness of Dylan's pen
