another way to really highlight the muddy mid frequencies is to use a digital EQ that has band pass filters so you can really hone in and hear the low mid frequencies and then dial them down

Thank you very much my brother. And I like waves SSL channel because, Well, they’re SSL.I use them extensively at church. I don’t know if my gold package has an analyzer, I reckon I could use an F6. Thank you so very much buddy. May God bless you and your work.

Damn i always use presets for eqing toms. After watch this video i just realize, it's the same move just like eq kick lol. Thanks Jo!

My recorded toms unfortunately don’t sound anything like that. Don’t know if it’s the drummer tuning or the mics (SM57) but it’s really hard to tell the 3 of them apart without any processing because they have a lot of bass (it’s not a proximity effect issue, I made sure of that). So, when using your teaching, it should have worked as you’ve shown, but by increasing the fundamental on the low end, it only increases the issue. Great videos. I’ve been binge watching them. So well explained, right to the point, and they actually work and you can hear the difference for the better, unlike other channels. Thank you for the amazing content!
@GreenLightSound
@GreenLightSound 2 года назад
It's probably a tuning issue. Many drummers don't really know how to tune drums, and there's a huge difference between poorly tuned toms and well tuned toms.
@DanielPestanaTranslations
@DanielPestanaTranslations 2 года назад
@@GreenLightSound Unfortunately, I’m afraid you’re absolutely right. We also had a lot of issues with the floor tom. It would spill to the kick. We had to eventually use a trick some drummers use. Cotton balls inside. It solved it. We tried different tunings on the toms, to get a similar sound to yours, but the drummer didn’t like it, so we just gave up on that. Sometimes I guess people just need to hear what their recorded instrument sounds like before we can change their minds.

Love your teaching style, great advice, very well presented, nice results. On a humorous note: I can’t believe nobody called you on your pronunciation of “high piss filter” !! I speak four languages and traveled for two decades around the world, so I understand accents, language barriers, all kinds of stuff. But except for that one word, you sound like a very normal English speaking (from America) kind of guy. Not sure why you pronounce high pass with an i. Anyway, thanks for a great tutorial, catch you on the next one !!

I usually cut from 600hz to 800 hz 12db or more and basically I get the same results.

I often use this method except: -that I do not cut as much of the lows -and I take the mids down at around 500hz. But sounds good. Great stuff, great channel. Subscribed. Keep it up 👍🏻

Never do eq in solo mode!
@GreenLightSound
@GreenLightSound 2 года назад
In most cases that's good advice. But here, we're trying to manipulate the tone of each tom. If you find conflicting frequencies later in the mix, you can always add another EQ to carve out space in the context of the full mix.
@danielkisel5661
@danielkisel5661 2 года назад
No that's never a good idea to eq in solo whatever you do except doing notch filtering for resonances not broad boost and also I mean that tom and kick sound okay after eq but that broad cut is just not focused enough I think 90% of the time I prefer to do quite the opposite to cut with tighter Q and really cut what cause that mud in the sound and boost usually with wider Q to make it sound more natural. Also doing too much boost at higher midrange around 3-4KHz will take up space where the vocals are most present and will create problems there possible harshness if it builds up there so with drums I'm careful around that region and much prefer and like the sound of shaping low end, low mids and boosting top end for snare for example around 6-7KHz and 10-12KHz to give it that energy and bite and don't usually go below 4KHz. But if this works for you great I just found out this to be less of a chasing your own tail later on when you add vocals, quitars, etc which all live in the midrange and build up there can create harshness very quickly.

This is assuming your toms are properly tuned to begin with.
