Bobby Darin, Orson Bean, Seals & Crofts, Joan Embery with a baby rhino are tonight's guests on this classic episode of The Tonight Show from 1973, including the instrumental breaks.
Bobby Darin was incredible. He could do it all. He had such a great TV show too - I wish you find copies of it on here. It's really sad that he'd be dead by the end of 1973.
Your statement is succinct and perfectly articulated. We watched the “Tonight Show” often in our bedrooms on a portable tv with antennas on top of it. I surely miss those simpler times.
@A.D. Why does *everything* and quite literally *everything* have to come down to politics and more specifically Trump? I could not careless regarding your love for Trump. However, why spend your time watching videos you deem worthless and devoid of talent? Enjoy wasting your time?
@A.D. Who are you to say @1madDogs suffers from TDS? Everything he said about trump in his comment is absolutely true. Trump, the Adulterer in Chief, has been married three times and made hush payments to a PORNSTAR and a PLAYBOY model. As to being a misogynist, trump is convicted by his own words, let alone actions. Remember his "grab em by the pussy" audio. The multiple bankruptcies, lawsuits, fines and penalties is quite indicative of his true criminal nature. The trump university scam was a criminal enterprise that was shut down. Trump's mentor early on was the famous, unscrupulous MOB lawyer Roy Cohn, a Fact most reasonable people would find disconcerting if they were aware of it. True trump derangement syndrome is what his supporters suffer from. It's main symptom is the inability to recognize what a conman trump is.
what a classic time !! I am now 56, I remember how the adults LAUGHED so hard !! Also here The Late Great Bobby Darin at just 37 when he passed in December of 73' ....Still pouring his heart out !!
Bobby Darin was one of the best all around entertainers of all- time & it's sad he left us so soon. He could play just about any instrument, he could sing & he could dance & he could act, What a super talented guy he was & to this day he is still missed by many
@@ynotttt Ed McMahon's talent was sooooooooo under-rated and taken for granted. Howard Stern called him a "no talent" when Mr. McMahon could have hosted the show himself. He knew his place and became a Legendary Announcer and Second Banana to two great Stars: Carson and Lewis.
@@johnsjohnson448I wouldn’t worry about what Howard Stern has to say about anyone, the man made his money off of filth and has contributed to how the average person in the our country has no class.
The segment with El Mouldo is hilarious especially because Johnny almost couldn't stop laughing. Makes me smile even when I'm very depressed. The show is such a comfort. Sometimes one wishes things could last forever!
I was in the 10th grade when this show aired, and because I had a TV in my room I often stayed up late on a school night to watch Johnny. But I have NO memory of El Mouldo. Was this a regular sketch? Was it on on often after and before this show.
@@MrJoeybabe25 I was a freshman in high school and we had him one in our house ever since I could remember and so it was like he was a part of our family . Biography was here on audiobooks and I don't know if it's still here it was written by the guy who had also been his lawyer and best friend . Johnny Carson lived an extraordinary life and lived well but later things were not so good for him and his later years were not good at all . Just hearing it was so depressing and in the end he became a recluse with no friends . He died a horrible death . Is that audiobook is here you should listen for because it just was really interesting they could easily make an excellent miniseries from it
Wow Bobby kicks it!❤❤ I just turned 17 yrs old that Jan 9.. Bobby seems to look well here to pass away that year, maybe he shouldn't have had that second surgery. So young and talented.
Yes. In fact those who had the very early satellite dishes (which were huge) could pick up the L.A. to NYC feed live. The feed would also include the unaired portions when they would go to commercial (which were added in New York). This became something of a scandal as Carson and company were unaware for sometime that the raw feed, with gossip, crude language and whatever else happened during the breaks, was being seen by these satellite viewers on their very expensive dishes. This lasted for a while until NBC got wise and encoded the feed. I'll bet some of these antics were recorded on early home vtr's and may be out there. It would be cool to see them. Anyone who can add to this, please do.
The greatest thing about Johnny Carson on RU-vid, is I get to pick out the funniest antidotes without waiting. I remember when I was 15 and still going to school, I used to beg my parent's if I could just see the monologue (they wouldn't let me see the whole show). Now I can finally see the animals at the end!
Mr. Darin was dying here... literally. Oxygen tanks backstage, etc. He was prophetic in that he understood that he would die in 1973. This was Feb., by April he played his last Vega shows... dead by December. Smart guy, multi-talented, joy to watch.
@@K.herrington7763 True, but his heart was already failing at this point. In fact his physicians told him it was open heart surgery to repair a botched surgery a few years earlier, or he would die. His heart was already damaged from childhood illnesses He was ill CONSTANTLY, his failure to take anti biotics could have been accidental or a subconscious death wish. And yes, he DID say he'd die in ''73, many friends backed up this statement. Geeze Leweeze.
@@JD-ij5fi Bobby knew he was going to die young. Romatic fever as a young boy had damaged his heart and during this appearance he had already been suffering from damaged heart valves. Still, he pushed himself unbelievably. Say what you want about his “ego”, but Darin was one of the greatest all around performers of his time!
@@JD-ij5fi Bobby Darrin died of the effects of rheumatic fever. He would have lived a lot longer if had listened to his doctors and adopted an easygoing lifestyle like I did and I'm 63.
Sure won’t see this on Antenna TV. They’re running the same old same old with crappy intros and hardly any musical guests at all. This is much better! 😎
Just speculation on my part but they probably needed special licencing permission to show the musical numbers on the Antenna reruns and they didn't want to spend the money to get it.
The Music Unions are VERY expensive, which is sad considering how many are missing the Cultural significance of getting to hear Doc Severinsen and the NBC Orchestra and performers of their generation perform.
Bobby's performance is absolutely smoking...all the more remarkable since this was when his health really started to fail. Such a talent. Thank for you posting this.
Thank you so very much for these great memories. I appreciate your audio being loud enough for this old, hard of hearing Baby Boomer. Just subscribed. ✌far out!!
G D IT!!! IS DARIN GOOD WHAT A PERFORMANCE!! I KNEW WHEN I HEARD "HIS TV SHOW AIRS FRI AT 10 ON NBC" THAT THIS WAS HIS LAST YEAR, WHAT A PERFORMER! !! THANK U SO MUCH WHAT A SHOW REALLY GREAT TALENT FUN JUST PLANE FUN ..TODAY? SORRY BUT FAKE LAUGHS HATRED & DIRTY PERSONAL ANIMOSITY
DARIN is the best ever NEVER BE REPLACED NEVER HES MIRACULOUS RIP ANGEL BOBBY PASSED SADLY SAME YEAR.SADLY BOBBY PASSED DEC 20TH THAT SAME YEAR DIDNT GET TO SEE HES CHESS TOURNAMENT MY HEART BREAKS RIP ANGEL ONLY ONE BOBBY DARIN RIP ANGEL
Great post. I missed seeing the show because I was working graveyards back in those days. It was great seeing Bobby Darin. He was a fun entertainer to watch and listen to. As I was watching him perform, I was going to comment on how he compared to Billy Joel as a multi talented entertainer. While singing Splish Splash, he paid homage to Mr.Joel in the song, when he mentioned his name That impressed me at what a classy and cool thing he did...and Billy Joel ain't chopped liver either(smile). Maybe things such as that endeared many of us as fans of Mr Darin. He was just 'plain folks' who was a 110 mile an hour entertainer. Listening to how "rich"lol , his early life was may have parlayed into how he enriched ours lives with his gifts Rest in peace, Bobby Darin. I missed you then and still miss you now. You probably got ol' Saint Peter Splishin' and a Splashin',lol.
Whatʼs a bit bizarre about this source is that the millions of TVs that originally received the broadcast of this episode are long gone. I was in HS... 💖
I guess when the country's democracy wasn't under attack things seemed funnier. I always get a great laugh when people come to non political things to complain about there's too much politics in stuff. Are you that self unaware? Full stupid?
He had a heart problem that was caused by Rheumatic Fever. Tragic sad -- he really lived much longer than expected and was ill a lot of the time before going on stage. (I knew his Conductor - Bob Rosario - another great man.) Today it could have been repaired. A sad loss of a immeasurable talent.
Of the six "Tonight Show" hosts-Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, and Jimmy Fallon-Johnny was the best; the most talented; the most versatile!
It’s hard to argue with Johnny’s appeal. Steve Allen was certainly an amazing talent who was quickly upgraded to prime time. Jack Paar was a fascinating personality and like Johnny and Steve, a smart and conversational host. Of the three since Johnny’s retirement, Conan is probably the most closest to the versatility of Carson. NBC did him wrong!
@@ryanrusch3976 Sorry. Conan "nixed" his OWN career when he first tried to push Jay out and then never listened to the network executives about making his show more "broad" in its appeal.
Seals and Crofts, like a more charismatic Simon and Garfunkel, they are a musical artifact I remember well. The 70’s were full of people like them and Cat Stevens that sort of serenaded us all blissfully. Great era for acoustic pop music.
Wish I could relive the seventies. Great music. Funny television. Enjoyable movies. Far out man. Made some bad choices but absolutely NO REGRETS. Now 75 with a rich storehouse of wonderful memories. From Johnny I learned how to have an interesting conversation with someone and how to be a good listener. Sad he had to leave. To quote Johnny himself, "Those DAMN CIGARETTES!"
Yes Seals and Crofts had some great songs Back in the Day ... what a great sound they had and what great memories . I Loved Cat Stevens Tea for the Tillerman album and saw him in concert maybe it was 1975 or something like that .
@@joannaedwards6325 Joanna you're about 10 years older than me and many times I've said I wish I could go back to the seventies especially the early part of the seventies . I don't know if it's still here but there was the audio books here on RU-vid of the biography of Johnny Carson by the man who was his best friend and lawyer . What an extraordinary life he lived and they could easily make a wonderful miniseries from that book . Regrettably in the end he was lonely and didn't really have many friends left they say he was a recluse at the end of life and died a horrible cancer death . It was very sad and painful just listening to some of it towards the end .
It's so refreshing to see a late night talk show open with the musical act. Nowadays, they almost always bring out the singer as the very last act on the show. By that time, I've usually fallen asleep.
Orson Bean was Andrew Breitbart's father-in-law and I agree with some of the other comments posted prior to mine and the current late night shows are just horrible. I don't know if the late night of today is bad because of the host or because today's entertainers have average intelligence.
I have so much fun proving people wrong when they insist that Heeeere's Johnny originated from The Shining. Amazing how people don't really remember even recent showbiz history.
Unfortunately Bobby had a heart condition that plagued him from childhood and it was only a matter of time before it gave out on him. In fact when he steps over to the desk to sit near Johnny you'll notice he's struggling to catch his breath for the first minute or so.
He failed to take the required antibiotics before a dental visit and developed sepsis which damaged his heart valves. After 6 hours of surgery in December he died without ever waking up.
I LOVED JOHNNY CARSON WATCHED HIM EVERY NIGHT BUT I FIND ON THIS INTERVIEW WITH BOBBY DARIN HE WAS VERY CONDISENDING ABOUT WHEN BOBBY SAID "FASCINATING "HE STOPPED AND SAID OH I DONT KNOW ABOUT FACINATING ""HE DIDNT HAVE TO SAY THAT TO BOBBY ALWAYS GOT TO GET HIS LAUGH IN WHILE BOBBY DARIN IS TALKING, ALWAYS HAD TO LET PEOPLE KNOW IT WAS HIS SHOW I REALLY LIKED HIM BUT LET THE GUEST TALK AND GET YOUR LAUGHS LATER. GOOD CONVERSATION BOBBY YOU WERE TO CKEVER FOR ALL THE REST
NYah the white shoes caught my eye too, I doubt they were ever in fashion for me, but you can’t blame Johnny and his clothing line from trying to change that.
" Jailer Bring Me Water" which I see was the flip side of " Things", the single release 1961-62. Former was given the Trini Lopez version early 1964,of whom I'm a fan. Bobby Darin was obviously very multi-talented, this is the very first time I've heard an interview of the person. He immediately comes across,as being very articulate, thoughtful, all of those good things
The Carson show was unbelievably great, with Johnny and just about every guest he had, Seals and Crofts never disappointed and in this performance the hit a grand slam. What great Melodies harmonies and guitar playing, I really miss the heck out of them..Rip Jim Seals. You were a great musician, singer, while you are here on Earth.
Same here. With 90 minutes they could go more into interesting guests and topics. But with the 60 minutes and the move to Hollywood there was much more fluffy PR stuff for guests methinks.....
I almost spoke with Joan Embery once. I worked in a survey call centre in the '90s , the computer dialed numbers in sequence. We operators only knew state/area code, not with whom we were speaking. I got her answering machine, apparently at home, since it was personal, not business message. (The computer didn't know from listed/unlisted numbers).
Those lazy entertaining days are gone forever. And they are not coming back. We each should be ready for eternity because it is coming for each of us. Jesus is the onlh way to get ready. God bless ypu
I don't think it had to do with plastic surgery or anti-aging procedures; people back then really did look older at earlier ages than we see now. I was a child of the seventies and I recall my grandmother looking like what you imagine a grandmother looks like: gray hair, glasses, those old-woman dresses, etc. My grandfather looked like a "classic grandfather": gray hair, a bit bent-over when he walked. Looking back now, I can't get over the fact that they were only in their mid-50s at the time. Looking at old family photos you can see it there too- people who were only in their 30's looked like they were in their 40's. I've heard all sorts of reasons why people aged earlier and faster in decades past, but the bottom line is, a person of 50 today looks like a person of 40 back then. That's one of those things that puts nostalgia in perspective, lol.
Antenna TV is airing the 90 minute episodes from the 70s, at least selected ones, on weekends. Bobby Darin would be dead before the year was out. He was starring on the Bobby Darin show that year with Geoff Edwards as a co-star.
You know it's 1973 when somone like Ed McMahon has longish hair! Mr. "Mack the Knife", Bobby Darrin at that time was doing war protest folk songs. - The sound engineer for Seals & Crofts kept the bass player's level so low it couldn't be heard. :( And for all the old farts saying "These shows were so much better than todays crap...you sound just like your parents..."Turn down that awful rock and roll! That's not music!".
