It’s so very strange. In Hungary where I live, thousands of miles from the US, most of the supermarkets shelves are filled with Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare..😱
When I clicked on the video, I said to myself, just call the video “Rare Breed and 9 other whiskies for under $60” because everyone knows rare breed will be on the list.
That's amazing. My first thought was...Rare Breed. I have a couple and they are usually 50 to 55 bucks. I was in a store the other day and they had it for 45 bucks. I had to stop myself from buying multiple bottles
Great video! You turned me on to Rare Breed last year and I really appreciate that. OF 1910 is one that I first tried (again last year) in a taster's pack. It had 350s of 1897, 1910 and 1920. Against Rare Breed, 1920 is much "sharper" to the mouth for me... like biting a curry comb, whereas Rare Breed is more like biting a make-up brush (no, I haven't bitten either). I'm finding that mouth-feel is a very important part of my whiskey experience. I love your presentations, please keep them coming.
Rare breed is a high proof killer. Every glass I pour myself I like it more. KC120 beats it. AlbertaPremiumCask beats it. Otherwise? It makes me regret almost every more expensive bottle I purchased at the 110+ proof point. Nothing against OF1920, but Rare Breed beats it handily. I like MM46cask but Rare Breed beats it too. I need to blind it against good old KC9 to see which I prefer... because if it beats KC9, it's possibly the best value bottle I've got (I do prefer KC12 and KC120 to it, but they are $70 bottles here). Also need to find some of the honey batch Larceny and EC barrel proof batches to compare to see if they can beat it.
Great recommendations. I just compared Tin Cup 10 to Eagle Rare last night, thinking they may taste very similar. While they are definitely similar, I thought the Tin Cup was more balanced, sweeter and overall enjoyable. The Eagle Rare was a bit watery compared. Tin Cup 10 is surprisingly good, especially for a lower proof!
Solid list. I don't see really anyone talk about the regular 94 proof George Remus. I just had this with Blanton's, Buffalo Trace, 1783 and that Green River. It really brought a lot to the table for it's price. Top of the group if not close second that particular night. Maybe I am one of the few that is fond of it. I think around $35ish. Maybe another option in the low 90s proof mid $30's range for others to consider. Cheers!
Another fun video, thanks! I can't find any fault in your list though I haven't tried Nelson Brothers yet, but I sure will now. I shop typically in Spring Hill, Franklin, and Murfreesboro and I will say that Knob Creek single barrel, while typically ~ $55, the store picks are $10 more. But worth every penny.
Great recommendations! I picked up Early Times for the first time yesterday and am blown away by it! Even more so because it was only $19 for the 1L at my local liquor store in AZ.
I think $60 is a real sweet spot for bourbon. There are so many great options right around $60 and under. In my market (excluding tax) that's getting me OF 1920, OF 1910, Rare Breed, Knob Creek 12yr, Knob Creek 9yr single barrel, Four Roses SBS, Wilderness Trail, Stellum, Baker's 7yr, 1792 FP picks, Bulleit barrel strength. That's not to mention all the other good stuff that's even cheaper.
Enjoyed the video! At a recent tasting we all felt that the 1910 was a bit more harsh on the "burn" than the 1920 which I thought was interesting considering the 1910 is quite a bit lower proof. To us, the 1920 was incredibly smooth and drank WAY below it's proof and even burned less than the 1910. Strange how that works haha. But, they are both great pours. I keep hearing about Early Times but I don't really ever see it around here since the BiB is allocated.
Had the pleasure of tasting the Nelson's Reserve at the distillery in December. Loved the bourbon, my wife preferred their Sour Mash. Preferred the bourbon also over the Bellmeade by a nose. Great review and choices.
I had been wondering about that Nelson's. Good to hear it is comparable to the Belle Meade Reserve which is really good. I was watching this while sipping on some 101, when you pulled the Rare Breed. I immediately grabbed a pour of it as well. It was a good Turkey Tuesday.
The proof that I agree with your list is that I have half of them in my bar. I had a pour of Rare Breed last Saturday with an Arturo Fuente Don Carlos cigar - what a pairing!
May I add a personal favorite? Blue Note Juke Joint Uncut. $50 on Long Island, NY. An extremely enjoyable whiskey at a great price. Also, for a few more bucks, Brothers Bond Cask Strength was a very nice surprise. Cheers!
Hey! I have really been enjoying your videos. Would love to see a four roses small batch select vs rare breed blind. I had a couple pours of these last night and the four roses seemed like there was so much more to it. Maybe because it’s non chill filtered. Picked up the rare breed at Walmart for 45 and the four roses at Costco for 50. Anyway great channel!!
Enjoyed the video. In Canada we do not access to a lot of these Bourbons , but they do come into Ontario on allocation. Thanks for the heads up. The WT Rare Breed and 101 are a good pour and are available. Cheers
I know it’s really hard to find, but I recently acquired a bottle of Stagg jr batch 16 for $49.99 (obviously limit one). It’s amazing. Deep dark fruit, a finish that lasts forever with a luscious mouth feel. If I can ever find it again I’m definitely buying another. Love your videos, keep it up. 👍
I've had all of these except the Tin Cup and Nelsons. Will have to look for them, I know Tin Cup is available here. I have to give a shout out to the Pursuit United. I met up with Kenny and Ryan at the Bardstown Kentucky whiskey festival in September. Kenny was claiming their bourbon was the best there. I didn't taste everything there but the Pursuit United bourbon was the best I tried that day. I just recently got both of the finished versions of their bourbon and rye and it's just $5 over your price point.
Thanks, again, for what you bring to the community. Appreciate this video very much! Have you noticed any difference between the old and new Early Times BiB? Also, since the Nelson Bros is sourced from Bardstown, does it have any similarities to other Bardstown products? Never tried any of their stuff and curious if this is an affordable way to fry some. Thanks!
We know that’s the common refrain with Brown Forman vs Sazerac Early Times but we’ve been through three bottles of each and it hasn’t been the case with our bottles. In fact we had a blind flight night with Patreon a few months back and the Sazerac Early Times beat the Brown Forman Early Times for everyone and it also beat EH Taylor SmB for 12 out of 14 people. Our Sazerac ET bottles have been so much more of a darker and richer cherry cola profile compared to the banana pudding profile of the Brown Forman Early Times. The variance on these is pretty wild. For Nelson Bros it’s reportedly their own mashbill that Bardstown is doing contract distillation work on. We wouldn’t say it’s wildly different in as much as Kentucky bourbon is already a pretty narrow spectrum of flavors, but it’s certainly its own product.
1792 is my go to daily drinker; 35$ in our Iowa market! OF 1920 is 69$ here! 1920 60$. ET BIB has changed; my last bottle was not very good; not sure why! Love the content!
Someone in the comments mentioned Sweetens Cove Kennessee. It is so very close to the Nelson Bros, I have a hard time telling them apart, but (at least in Memphis) its over $60 ($65 I think). Worth checking out if you haven't.
omg just tried Nelson Bros.. SO much oak up front which was pleasant, followed by spice and lots of vanilla and cherry ish notes.. Smelled a lot sweeter than it tasted but was very good.
Josh, Sweetens Cove 'Kennessee' is right in your wheelhouse. Highly recommend. Delicious! A bit over 110 proof. Tons of caramel, brown sugar, sweet oak with some beautiful spice on mid palate. Viscous! Great finish! $57 msrp
I think you can also add New Riff BiB or single barrels, Wilderness Trail BiB, Jack Daniels single barrel, Penelope Four Grain, Maker's Cask Strength, Smooth Ambler. As much as we're seeing price jumps, there is actually a lot of great whiskey below $60. They aren't going to compete for whiskey of the year, but so many are a solid B/B+.
Love the video highlighting this price point. A little surprised nothing from Four Roses made the cut. The single barrel runs comfortably below $60 and is a solid option for any occasion.
On one video you mentioned blending green river with another bourbon. I can’t seem to find that and I didn’t take notes. Can you refresh my memory? Thanks a bunch
Let us help fight any FOMO. It’s good value bourbon but nothing ground breaking. Cooper’s Craft, Jack Bonded, and Old Fo 100 are all reasonably substitutes, and Wild Turkey 101 and Evan Williams BiB are equally good value with a different flavor profile. We do enjoy Early Times but don’t think anybody is missing out if it’s not available in their market. Cheers and thanks for watching Mack!
Bulliet 10 yr was a nice surprise for me. I like that you give a nod to the stapes of the price point, but glad that some of the outliers were mentioned. Any recommendation on Old Scout.
I'm totally with you on the Tin Cup 10 year > Eagle Rare. I just wish that it was about $10 less. At the lower proof it seems to be slightly overpriced.
I’m a little surprised Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel doesn’t come up more on this channel because of the love that Rare Breed gets. That is an option I would definitely add to your list.
We love Russell’s SiBs but they’ve become a hunted item by flippers so it’s rare that we get them anymore, and they’re marked up to $80 when they do hit stores. Wish they were more available and closer in price to Rare Breed and we’d be singing their praises.
Russell’s 10 year is a nice expression that is ~$43 around my area. It reminds me of Eagle Rare in that the 10 years aging results in a very nice bourbon but I wish another 10 proof points were available.
@@stuffandwhiskey Russell’s SB is getting very hard to find and pricy in SoCal as well - ~$70s. If it shows, you gotta grab it because it goes fast. I personally find Rare Breed to be a good replacement. Its flavor profile and proof versus the price makes it a great value in today’s whiskey world - and it’s relatively available as you guys pointed out.
I was wondering the same. I guess that makes sense. RR SiB isn’t available in my area (Central IL) but it’s every where near my mom in S WI. Last month got a RR SiB for $55 & a RR Private Barrel Select for $69.
I haven’t had many KC picks, but so far I’m just not a big fan. I did blend one with the standard KC9 to bring it down to 110 and I have to say I think I like it more. I typically like high proof pours but the KC pick I had was hot. I think 1792 SmB is one of the most underrated shelfers out there. Maybe it’s the bottle design, I’m not sure. But I’m a fan of Barton. WT101 will always have a place in my house. I particularly like blending it with WT101 Rye, so good! 2/3 bourbon, 1/3 rye. I’ll have to check out the Nelsons Greenbrier Reserve. Thanks for the tip!
@@stuffandwhiskey That’s a good point, I am typically hesitant to add water, not sure why, I really need to just try it! What’s the worst that’s going to happen?!
They’re great value bottles for sure. We just find Green River and 1792 SmB to be a little more interesting and wanted the vary the list a little from the common classics.
Great list. I would put the 1792 Full Proof in place of the SMall Batch - I think it is a much nicer product if you aren't turned off by the 125 prof (though IMHO, it drink way lower than its proof point).
@@stuffandwhiskey Huh. Didn’t realize it was like that. It’s readily available here (Boston area) both regular and store picks. Oddly the BiB is nowhere to be seen around here.
As a 10-year bourbon, I will stand by Russell’s Reserve over Tin Cup or Eagle Rare. Price is way better than Tin Cup, however, Eagle Rare may appeal to certain palates. Rare Breed is fantastic, Nelson Bros was a nice surprise, 1792 Small Batch is great as is Early Times. KC SB 120 is a favorite. We are mostly on the same page. Y’all are the best. Cheers!
You know we’re Turkey fans Mike! Wanted to get Rare Breed in here plus the honorable mention to 101 but Russell’s 10 would’ve been next in line. Cheers!
Thanks for watching David! A bit confused by your comment, however, and want to understand where you’re coming from. Can you clarify? If it was a photo of the bottles and a typed list it would be a blog post rather than a video. It’s very important to us to say the “why” behind each bottle as well, because without the context of why each bottle was included, it doesn’t make for helpful content in our opinion. Hopefully that makes sense.
@@stuffandwhiskey sorry for the confusion. I was just saying to maybe list the names of the bourbons somewhere in the side bar so people like me can take a picture of them and not have to write them down so when we go to a store we can quickly reference the picture and bypass a written list. Thanks and keep up the great reviews.
Hey Tex - I’m with you 100 % - Russell’s Reserve SB is super tasty. Also love Woodford Reserve DO (also under $60) and Jack Danials SBBP but that’s $65 here in Maine.
Coopers Craft, spirits of French Lick William Sinclair, Clayton James Tennessee Whiskey, Chattanooga Whiskey 111, Four Roses Single Barrel, New Riff Bourbon, Wild Turkey 101, Smoke Wagon Uncut the Younger, Sonoma Distilling Cherrywood Bourbon, Balcones Pot Still… are my jamz
Nothing is for everyone, and can see Nelson Bros not being everyone’s cup of tea as we could even bottle on this list. Appreciate you tuning in and commenting Teddy! Cheers!
We still love us some New Riff picks. Leaving them out was more oversight than slight on our part. They should’ve definitely been in here. All our favorite picks are stashed back because we like them so much, so we didn’t even see them when we were grabbing bottles for the video idea. Our bad!
We’ve blinded and wrote so much about this topic we have a copy and paste document for it. Standby! “We know the common refrain with Brown Forman vs Sazerac Early Times is that Brown Forman is better, but we’ve been through three bottles of each side by side and it hasn’t been the case with our bottles. In fact we had a blind flight night with Patreon a few months back and the Sazerac Early Times not only beat the Brown Forman Early Times easily for everyone but it also beat EH Taylor SmB for 12 out of 14 people-so it’s not just our palates. Our Sazerac Early Times bottles have had a much more dark and rich cherry cola profile compared to the banana pudding profile of the Brown Forman Early Times. All that to say, the variance on these is pretty wild. Can’t expect the highest level of quality control in blending on a $25 liter of bourbon we suppose. Let us help fight any FOMO as well. It’s good value bourbon but nothing ground breaking. Cooper’s Craft, Jack Bonded, and Old Fo 100 are all reasonably substitutes, and Wild Turkey 101 and Evan Williams BiB are equally good value with a different flavor profile. We do enjoy Early Times but don’t think anybody is missing out if it’s not available in their market.”
@Stuff & Whiskey LOL, appreciate the time spent cutting & pasting! It's pretty easy to get here in Michigan, so I guess I need to just break down and try a bottle. Thanks, and love your videos!!
@@stuffandwhiskey ok thanks. I am new beginner and I have 6 open bottles but want to get about more but am realizing I can’t drink it all myself fast enough. I am not going expensive but trying to get all the < $40 bottles. I drink about 1 oz in evenings so 10 bottles would take me 1 year. I have Wild Turkey 101, Evan Williams B&B, Buffalo Trace, Woodford Double Oak, Benchmark Small Batch, and Early Times (6). I want to get 1792 Reserve, Old Grandad 114, Old Forester 1910 or 1920, Elijah Craig Small Batch, Knob Creek 9, Russel’s Reserve, Makers Mark 46.
Everybody has different taste buds and different likes and dislikes. I have tried bourbon that people just raved about that I didn’t like....1792 knobs creek and four roses for me just didn’t float my boat at all. I like the miniatures when I can find them rather than buying a big bottle. When I bought 1792 it wasn’t anywhere near the cost you said. I paid like $37 for it and regretted it. I know. Everybody’s different. All of these are nice bourbons so I’m not saying they’re not, just that there is a certain something that I want to taste in bourbon that I can’t put my hands on. Thanks for your show because we all appreciate good bourbon. Making good whiskey is truly an art form.
@@stuffandwhiskey I believe it was Freud that said sometimes a cigar is a great smoke and sometimes it’s just a cigar. It just depends upon what fires in your brain at the time and your level of enjoyment at that time. It really is so true that your mental state and your palette at the time determine so much. Very true.
"Litera Cola" LOL! Wish I could get Green River in my area as I have heard good things in many places, but I am 90% behind you on all of these (though I have only had the older Belle Meade Reserve not the newer Nelson Bros. version) with the exception of Tin Cup 10yr. Though I agree that the "regular" version is a big ol' double thumbs down and the 10-yr is WAAAAY better, I really don't think it compares to Eagle Rare for complexity of flavor. Easier to find FOR SURE, but it just doesn't do it for me. YMMV.
That’s fair Chris, and Eagle Rares can vary quite a bit too. If you get a good one, it’s hard to find a comparable bottle for the money at retail. If you get an average to odd one, you’ll wonder what all the fuss is about. We’ve got one standard and one store pick right now and if someone tried the store pick blind they might actually dump the glass down the sink instead of finish it because it’s so odd.
You are a cute couple. My wife got me into whisky. She still likes to add a drop of tonic while I’ve moved from neophyte to neat drinker of 120 proofs. 4 roses, knob 120, and rare breed are staples for me. Based on your rec will definitely pick up a Nelson. Always liked the Belle Mead. Maybe I can get my wife to join me in a blind comparison video of the 4. Her palate is actually really way above my own and she’d be the star of the show. Cheers!🎉😊
Old Forester 1920, Old Forester 1910, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Four Roses Small Batch Select, Russel's Reserve Single Barrel, Russel's Reserve 10yr, Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve, Penelope Barrel Strength Select, Early Times Bottled In Bond, & Wild Turkey 101
@@stuffandwhiskey Fair enough. I like it better than many Four Roses SiB I've had, and I can get it for $55 here in Dallas. It just hits on another level.
Different Kentucky Spirits vary as it’s a single barrel, and quite marked up in our market (stores at at $80 on them). We tend to prefer the proof and consistency of Rare Breed, but have had some outstanding Kentucky Spirits.
With a $60 limit, I'd get 1792 Full proof instead of the small batch. John J Bowman is a no-brainer for my list also. Michter's SB or American, and Russell's single barrel would be on my list too.
As with any matter of taste, palates will differ. Seems to be split on those who prefer Belle Meade and those who prefer Nelson Bros. If you’re in the Belle Meade camp stock up before supplies run out. Becoming a TN-only product.
We hear ya. Nobody is more unhappy with the audio than us. We’re working on it and think we have it solved now with some sound treatment measures to help with reverb.
I can vouch for Old Forester 100 - it's good stuff. Here, I've never seen Eagle Rare or Early Times BiB, and I've only seen Buffalo Trace on the shelf once.
We definitely wouldn’t pay that much. It’s not readily available but suggested retail is near $30 and goes for $30-40 in most markets. We’re a hard pass on price gouging stores marking it up to $70 and beyond.
I prefer the Small Batch Select but runs around the low to mid 60s around where I live. One can find it at nice n a while for the high 50s. When it first appeared in my area, it showed up at Costco for $50 - bought several bottles but now I’m down to my last one.
@@BeersHunter I don’t know the whiskey market in Delaware - I’m in Southern California - but $55 would be a good price here. This expression is always on the shelves at bottle shops, usually at ~$62-$67 on average. Single Barrel 100 proof is usually ~$45-$50. Costco has recently sold it at $38. If $55 has been the going price in Delaware for a while, you should be OK buying as you want it. But if prices tend to be volatile in Delaware - they almost always have been going up here - you may want to stash away some if it’s not a financial issue. As an example, Eagle Rare is not too hard to get around here - was low $20s forever until around 2017 - bumped up to $28-$30. Barrel picks were usually ~$33-$35. Local bottle shops just got in a shipments recently - not barrel picks. New price is $40. So my walk away with whiskey is, because demand is completely overwhelming supply (especially anything considered to be quality stuff), expect prices to continue rising for the foreseeable future. “Affordable” and “whiskey” are rarely mentioned together.
We hear ya. There are diminishing returns at play as the price climbs often times, but most of the time we'd rather have one very good $60 than two "just alright" $30 bottles.
Fun list! The Rare Breed is going to fall off the $60 and under soon.. as it seems to be going up and up, just like most all bourbons. Knob Creek SB is the winner on the list for me, hands down! I know, I’m a huge Beam backer but if you want a high proof sipper or one that will really shine in a cocktail, KCSB is the one! The ET BiB was amazing when it was Brown Forman juice but the switch to Sazarac has ruined it for me. Very astringent and not near the flavor profile as it once had. Pursuit United stuff is fabulous!!
