Should've just named ten random Dutch cities who are all way better for cycling. Copenhagen is in no way better than any Dutch city btw.

True. The Danish are very good at branding. I know the city and believe me, Copenhagen is not that bike friendly as being presented. Broad roads, roads without physical seperation of cars, strange crossings with car roads, etc etc. I don't understand why this story keeps holding so strong and is copied that easily. And not to talk about Denmark it self. I once tried to travel with my bike by public transport over a major train route from the north to the south of the country... It was a complete disaster: 3 (or maybe a bit more) bikes were allowed in the entire train...

For the size it is more impressive. Usually once a city gets to the size of copenhagen their trips become more around 5% bike journeys, yet copenhagen has been able to keep up their infrastructure to maintain the same scale of use of bikes as any 10 smaller dutch cities you could name have. Just the shear scale and cost of the copenhagen bike infrastructure is incredible.

They should make this list excluding the Netherlands. Literally every city I've been to over here has better cycling infrastructure than any city outside the Netherlands I've been to. And as others have said, Amsterdam doesn't even rank particularly high amongst other Dutch cities

Being Dutch and coming to cities abroad that are so called 'cycling friendly' allways depresses me. Seeing how they are miles away from Dutch cycling infrastructure county wide. The only complaint there is about Dutch cycling is how busy it gets sometimes but that isnt a bad thing is it? But I guess this list would be kinda boring with all of the cities being Dutch wouldn't it ;p

Meanwhile in the US, a bike lane is a 2 foot wide piece of the road, with the only separation from 7,000 pound SUVs traveling at 40mph being a tiny white line. Oh well, it's a step in the right direction

@CyberdyneSystemsSkynet
@CyberdyneSystemsSkynet 4 года назад
I think that's the shoulder. And in most places where you're on the shoulder in the US you're supposed to use the lane and have rights to use the full lane if there is oncoming traffic or are approaching or in an intersection and when a car is passing it must give you at least 3 feet of space no matter where you are even if you are on the shoulder. Because we all know that's exactly how people in F150s drive...

Not sure why Sacramento didn't make the list. Sacramento has bike lanes for days (I mean, passing lanes for motorists wanting to turn right, or motorcyclists wanting to pass vehicle traffic; not to mention where residents place their garbage bins, and yard waste piles), a lovely 26mi dedicated bike route along a parkway (used for dumping when you're too cheap to pay the dump fee, and for dog maulings, muggings, assaults, and massive homeless camps), etc.

This is a way late reply but Malmo is not as good as Copenhagen. There are a couple big issues, in Malmo there are many bigger streets that don’t even have bike lanes. Secondly you’re allowed to bike in both directions on bike lanes. Lastly bikes are not allowed to bike against one way streets

The bicycle could save the human race and Planet Earth, if we just let it. Bikes use watts where cars use kilowatts. The top ten are all European cities, where bicycles are not considered "vehicles". Australia, Canada, USA, ENfgalnd and NZ all treat cyclists the same as a high-powered car or a heavy haulage truck. Europe teats them more like pedestrians, but properly as their own vehicle class. Note the lack of helmets in the leading cities. If we could remove our despised mandatory helmet law in Australia, we could make some progress. E-bikes have tremendous potential in Australia, to overcome distance and climate barriers, but until we can embrace utility cycling, rather than sport cycling, we will make no progress.

Just got back from 10 weeks bike touring in Europe (see my vlog!) and I've cycled half of the top 10. Strasbourg was my favourite, the Dutch cities had so many other bikes it was hard to find somewhere to lock up! Amazed Germany isn't featured. Freiburg im Breisgau is fantastic and generally their intercity infrastructure (around the Rhine and Neckar at least) is incredible. Even Stuttgart, home to Mercedes Benz, is a really great place to cycle.

Yeah but that's the thing. All that cycling infrastructure in Amsterdam or Utrecht or any other Dutch city, town or village doesn't stop at the edge of town. It goes on until you reach the country border. It's effectively countrywide. And as a cyclist you're basically committing suicide as soon as you cross that border, anywhere..

A young woman yelled angrily at me before passing me and touched my jacket with her handlebars. When I was already touching the wheel of a parked bike walking past a bike parking station turned partially sideways to make her as much room as possible. The only way I could have given more room was to hop on somebody else's parked bike or into the dyke beyond. THX so very much.

I checked the comments thinking i'd find lots of drivers spouting hate for cyclists and it seems just a bunch of friendly riders supporting their local town/cycling infrastructure, so well done. i currently live in London and don't see it in the top 10 anytime soon, but there are some developments on the way. the issue with cycling is, as a lot of people have mentioned, not a facilities one, but a cultural one of drivers vs cyclists and countries like the uk, the us and australia (to quote the most common complaints) have it too ingrained in their heads that cars are kings of the road. i've been buzzed at and literally told to get off the road or that cars have priority over cyclists by a few drivers (even though the law does state that cyclists have as much right to the roads as cars do). anyway, thanks for putting out this video, i'll be sure to check out the website and see how London fared (hopefully better than what i expect, but i'll keep my expectations low)

I moved to Copenhagen a year ago and cycling is my means of transport for 99 percent of my journeys. And I think these rankings are flawed because they focus too much on infrastructure. Yes, the infrastructure here is fantastic, but despite the dominance of cycling, the mindset is still cars first, then bikes, then pedestrians. For instance, traffic lights are set for cars, not bikes. On my regular commute, I'm lucky to get 2 green lights out of the 12 or so that I have to pass through. Whenever there are road works, pedestrians and cyclists are forced to share narrow and often dangerous paths while cars are given all the space they need. And then there is the behaviour of people in cars. Danish drivers are quite aggressive and the number of people who give cyclists attitude is surprising for such a cycling city. I've never ridden in the Netherlands, but apparently there is a big focus on traffic calming and cars being 'guests' on the roads. Copenhagen really needs to adopt a similar approach. Coming from Australia, cycling here is incomparable. But it takes more than just separating cyclists from cars.

Most of these relatively small, which makes Paris all the more impressive (& gives LDN no excuse) Idea for show: city guides for some of some of these places - would be nice to know some scenic / fun bike routes through Copenhagen, etc. Take weekend city break with some not-so-cycley mates to show them what life _could_ be like. AMS cycle lane moped ban long overdue, what about teaching cyclists to respect pedestrians? Speaking as a cyclist, attitude of Dutch cyclists used to really grate when I lived there.

I have lived in Vienna, Paris and Barcelona and while the infrastructure is definitely worse in Barcelona, the fact that the weather is so good for cycling and the heavy use that the bike hire service has should make it pretty high in the list. I get that I sound a bit salty but the number one spot is quite predictible with an index that's literaly called the Copenhagenize index. Another point: it's nonsense placing Amsterdam above Utrecht as a cycling city.
@frederikbrandt424
@frederikbrandt424 4 года назад
Well you said it yourself, you're clearly salty and don't know a lot about cycling in Denmark. Where I live I can get to anywhere I want on bikelanes. They're everywhere and a lot are completely separated from the road networks for cars. It's actually the quickest form of transport in some instances because of the shortcuts. There's a reason it's called the Copenhagenize index, it's because they've been leading the way for many years. Maybe you should worry less about a list with zero importance and instead be happy that cycling exists outside of The Netherlands, even though you hate to admit it.
@jerbertstansmer9687
@jerbertstansmer9687 4 года назад
@@frederikbrandt424 Actually I agree mostly with Thomas. For instance Groningen in the Netherlands should be in the list, they literally redesigned the complete city center in favor of cycling. I visited Copenhagen twice and I live in the Netherlands. It felt like coming home but in Copenhagen I missed (or did not see) the related infrastructure like they made in for instance Utrecht, Groningen and Houten (and I could easily name about ten more cities). What you state about getting everywhere by bike in Denmark is not an issue in the Netherlands, we have it already countrywide for decades. The newest development in the Netherlands is connecting cities with biking highways (so highways for bikes only) If you are interested I would suggest the RU-vid-channel Bicycle Dutch. It's filled with projects and concepts throughout the Netherlands about cycling. Many bike-only bridges etc like the one in Copenhagen. Finally I really like that Denmark and Norway are doing well with the cycling culture and wish them all the best.

Jerbert Stansmer Cities have to be 600.000 inhabitants and above to qualify for the list. If they’d include, let’s say 100.000 and above, the top ten would be swamped with Dutch cities. The entirety of The Netherlands breaths bikes; Just over 1,3 bikes per capita 33.000 kilometres of dedicated bike only lanes 55.000 kilometres of shared bike and car lanes In total about 15.000.000.000 km (yes, 9 zeros!) cycled annually, that’s over 880km per capita. No other country in the world comes close to that. But if the bigger “car centred” cities in some countries can switch to a more bike friendly attitude and urban planning that would be a big plus for every one. (Edited for typo)

@wimpie031 4 года назад
Frederik Brandt If i.e. New York would have started that list it would have been the NewYorkize list.
