"I had a bad day too, once." That for me, sums up in one line of dialogue what makes TAS's version of Batman the best version of Batman. I honestly don't even think I need to elaborate; if you've seen the episode, you already know what I'm going to say.

I also like the Two Face episode, and for an additional reason. I watched Night Court as a teen, and really grew to like Richard Moll and his character, Bull. So that alone was good enough to get my attention on Two Face. His voice acting is really superb; he knocks it out of the park.

One of my favorite episodes is with the Riddler and Batman gets trapped to the point that he has to hide in a safe to survive. I love it for that moment of the scene where we hear the Riddler scream “I have to know!” In Arkham when he realizes Batman outsmarted him.

Had the tie-in comics not been a thing, I would've thought that this ep is the very reason the Riddler lost his moxie come The New Batman Adventures.

I'd add "Dreams in Darkness" to this list. It is truly one of the most underrated episodes of the series and features Scarecrow at his most sinister (at least before his re-imagining in 1999). It features some FANASTIC, gobsmacking animation (especially where Batman is hallucinating the rogues gallery and forced to flashback in the night his parents were murdered). It's well written, well paced and has some good rock-em, sock-em action. "Dreams in Darkness" *definitely* deserves some love from this channel and fans in particular.

"We used to date." "Ah!" is SUCH a hilarious line, and one I forgot. Also... Croc DID throw a rock at Batman at least once... and it DID almost kill Batman. As for Trial, my favorite part of that episode is the end, where Batman says that he wants a city that doesn't need him anymore too.

To throw my hat into my top 10 favorite episodes let me set a few rules first. I am going not going to include any of the crossover episodes, so no worlds finest, no girls night out, etc. Also I won’t include Batman beyond as that’s its own thing and deserves its own list. Though I will include the new Batman adventures just because I feel it’s on point for the best of the animated series original run and it still uses the original opening. That said here we go! Before I start here’s some honorable mentions that almost made it: birds of a feather, Harley’s holiday, jokers millions, beware the creeper,and Showdown. 10. The man who killed Batman. 9. A bullet for Bullock 8. Beware the grey ghost 7. The demons quest parts 1 and 2 6. Robin’s reckoning parts 1 and 2 5. Mad love 4. Over the edge 3. Legends of the dark knight 2. Trial 1. Heart of Ice

Perchance To Dream just missed out because of some poor animation. I recently noticed that in about half of the shots the characters are cross eyed and now I can’t stop noticing it every time I watch it. Still, it was Kevin Conroy’s favourite episode, so it has that going for it. I make a distinction between Batman the Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures, which is why no TNBA episodes are on this list. I have done a top 5 TNBA Episodes list, and you will probably not be too surprised to see Over The Edge on that list 👍

@@SerumLake Believe me those are the best episodes, being a Two Face fan I'd also include Shadow of the bat, Second chance, Judgement day and even the Strange case of Bruce Wayne, but that's just me, overall the ones you mentioned are the best, most of them introduced the most compelling villains by giving them an origin story, as we always say those bad guys were pretty much unkonwn for those who never read a comic until then, BTAS was indeed a game changer, and it definitely changed things for the better ;)

My top five is pretty consistent, but the bottom 6-10 are in a bit more of a flux. But having just finished re-watching the series, my top 10 right now would be; 10. Over the Edge As far as alternate reality episodes goes, this one tops Perchance to Dream for me. While PtD is more interesting to discuss, OtE is simply more entertaining. And it has a very sweet ending for such a dark story. 9. The Gray Ghost Okay, one of the things that elevates this episode is the fact that it Adam West playing The Gray Ghost which gives it a real-world subtext it would lack otherwise. But it is a sweet and nice story. 8. Read My Lips Really a a perfect exxample of what made Batman TAS so great. The way they took villains who were seen as goofy or bad or d-tier and did their best to make them sympathetic and scary at the same time. Mr Freeze is the biggest success, but I also love Read My Lips and, hell, the whole Ventriloquist/Scarface trilogy (RML, Catwalk, Double Talk) is great and I love the fact since it's an animated adaptation and not a never-ending comic book they managed to give Wesker a happy ending. But RML is still my favourite. A great detective and Noir story at the same time as the psychological horrors with the abusive relationship Wesker has with Scarface/himself. 7. Harlequinade When it comes to Harley-centric episodes, this one is my fave (yes, above Mad Love. ML is a great story, but Harlequinade is just more entertaining to me). 6. Growing Pains My favourite New Batman Adventures episode. Tragic and bittersweet. Poor, poor Annie. 5. The Man Who Killed Batman Kind of reminds me of "Blink" from Doctor Who in that it is a Doctor/Batman Light episode that still shows the consequences of the normal people living in the BAtman/Doctor world and done well. 4. Robin's Reckoning Parts 1&2 The rope swinging back into frame. Need I say more? 3. The Joker Trilogy By which I mean Joker's Favor, Joker's Wild and The Laughing Fish. All written by Paul Dini, these three to me are the best Joker-centric episodes in all of Batman TAS, and since he is Batmans #1 Villain, when Joker is at his best, Batman is at his best. 2. Heart of Ice Was for a long time my favourite. It is the one that perfected the TAS formula of introducing a new villain, giving them a sympathetic if twisted motivation and showing us their human side. And Dinis perfect blend of dark psychological drama with just the right amount of cartoon humour and flavour makes this a great watch. 1. Almost Got'im. Yeah, Trial is bigger, but I think Almost is tighter. With honourable mentions to Two-Face parts 1&2 (great epsiodes, love the tragedy of Harvey Dent), Feat of Clay (especially part 2. The ending transformation is top notch animation, and Batmans interogation of Germs is just gold), Christmas With The Joker (not the greatest, but still enough fun and a Christmas staple at my home), Trial (for all the reasons you said), Perchance to Dream, Mad Love, Catwalk (my favourite Catwoman episode. She is, next to Joker, my favourite Batman-villain) and POV (just love Batman vs Gangsters. And it's Montoyas finest hour).
@SerumLake

Those are all good shouts. I think I may be the only person that distinguishes between BTAS and TNBA… if I didn’t, then Growing Pains would be in my top 10, probably at the number 5 slot.

Just doing catch-up on vids like this. Anyways, will instead just mention flaws (and if there are none to find, then there's none) for each ep in my opinion, because the greats are, at most, well spoken here (plus some chatty asides) 10 - Wish they were more sympathetic to the duplicant, even when he was H.A.R.D.A.C.'d against his will. Yes, I don't call the robotic Batman a dehumanizing "it". (See, Fox Kids, it's not murder if the victim is neither Batman nor human.) 9 - Harley should have killed him then and there. The no-kill rule is benevolent, but even it prevents better worlds from ever happening. (We're gonna miss you lots, Arleen...) 8 - If only Batman's kindness was enough to prevent the horrible flashback events of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker set in, what, 2007? (Man, Sherman tanks, I think, are still used in the early 1990s in the DCAU. Why must Gotham City be using such old tech for their cheapskate tricks?) 7 - (Bet the people who owned that stolen car from the ep's flashback start were coldly murdered by the Joker offscreen.) 6 - (Funny how, in the alternate future of Justice League's "Hereafter", it's implied that Deadshot became the one who got the titular title.) 5 - Wish Teddy Lupus returned afterwards, in a manner similar to Two-Face's beloved Grace in the tie-in comics. (To think the maligned Catwoman movie and The Dark Knight Rises seemed to have taken notes on this two-parter. Anyways, kudos, TMS for Part II, and AKOM... at least you did good in Part I.) 4 - I now think of the ep as overrated. Still great and entertaining, of course, but otherwise way too familiar. (Kudos, Spectrum Animation! If only AKOM left the animation industry in tatters, not you guys.) 3 - I think the Catwoman rescue endgame was a bit unnecessary. The time for it would have sufficed for another anthology tale by another villain, like the Mad Hatter or the Riddler had they been there. Plus, sucks that Killer Croc falsely became a memetic loser because of this ep, even when it wasn't him. 2 - In my opinion, I prefer the Arkham Asylum and City video games more when it comes to the concept. Plus, District Attorney Janet shouldn't have been able to successfully throw that acquired Batarang. (I wonder if the Riddler there was still catatonic, or was sane enough to not join the chaotic fray. Anyways, at least the episode didn't become that planned B: TAS movie which then became Mask of the Phantasm.) 1 - Karma houdinis, Candice and Rupert Thorne. Oh, how I hope they got their dues afterward. (Oh, what any meddling Multiversal operative/chrono trooper would do so to save Harvey from that horrid scarring fate...) If I have a personal random pick of a favorite, there's Robin's Reckoning, and if I have a criticism of it, they should have made the second part slightly longer so to have included that "young Robin is finally sworn in by candlelight" sequence.

Although I agree with most of your choices, I can't believe _Almost Got 'Im_ made the list, and _The Laughing Fish_ didn't. I suppose _Almost Got 'Im_ has some clever dialogue and good directing. But though I was only 10 when it first aired, I already felt cheated by its flashback anthology trope. You've got just 22 minutes, so why not tell a proper story? I recognized the framing device as the kind of thing every hackneyed American sitcom used to do when the writers were running out of ideas. Like the obligatory _shrink-the-protagonist_ episode that found its way into every Saturday morning cartoon. Whereas _The Laughing Fish_ is one of the only Joker episodes (with the possible exception of _The Joker's Favor_ ) where the character is being exactly who he's meant to be - the savant mob enforcer gone psycho - rather than the wise-cracking slapstick baddie, mugging to the audience at every opportunity. I'll even forgive this episode's ill-conceived shark-battle set piece. And I'll do that for 2 reasons: 1. The series has never felt more _film noir,_ with the drizzling rain and grim countdown. And... 2. Because of the spine-chilling Bernard Herman-èsque score by Shirley Walker.
@SerumLake
@SerumLake Год назад
You make a very compelling argument. I don't know if you've seen my Tier List video from about a year ago, but I did rate The Laughing Fish very highly, just outside of my top 10. I am a sucker for villain team up episodes because it makes the world feel more real and connected.

Nice list indeed. I tend to struggle with coming up with my own cuz honestly a Top 10 list doesn't do Batman TAS justice for me. There's just too many great ones to pick from, even without including the New Adventures episodes. I'm a little surprised you didn't include "Perchance to Dream" (Kevin Conroy's favorite, RIP). Would that be in your Top 20 list perhaps?

@darthgoku90
@darthgoku90 Год назад
@@SerumLake No, I get it. At least AKOM didn't animate that episode, or it would've most likely turned out a lot worse. As for me, I've usually been able to overlook the animation quality as long as the writing and voice acting is solid, and that's certainly how I feel about episodes like "Perchance to Dream" or "Beware the Gray Ghost". Still, I have often thought that if the first 65 episodes of BTAS were divided into multiple seasons instead of one, then they would've been able to use the services of Spectrum and TMS for a lot more episodes. I know that a lot of 80s and 90s cartoon shows were produced that way, like Duck Tales, Tiny Toons and Animaniacs, but I don't think their animation quality was as important since they were all comedies.

@SerumLake Год назад
I suppose we have to remember that, at the time, no one really knew that this was going to be such a seminal show. @@SerumLake Yeah, I guess at least the WB execs and also the Fox Kids people were not expecting BTAS to turn out the way it did. Good thing the BTAS crew took their work serious at least.

In my view it’s let down by some wonky animation - seriously, the character models are cross eyed half the time, it’s really distracting 😂- but I get that a lot of people love it, including the late, great, Kevin Conroy.

@@SerumLake Can't say I ever noticed the animation but it has been a long time since I've seen the whole thing. I also love it because it made Mad Hatter of all villains strike a seriously personal blow against Batman. The only time in the comics the character has been done as well (or even better) than this is Gail Simone's "Secret Six."

1:41 That episode also shows that Harley cares about the other rogues while Joker doesn't give a shit about killing them by blowing Gotham up.

Too many Joker's episode. Bullet for Bullock, Dreams in Darkness & Perchance to Dream are better than Harley's Holiday.

You messed up big time! Saying holiday knights is at end of the series is flawed because Robin clearly shows signs of inexperience. He walks slowly on side of building tip toeing to maintain balance and not landing on bus when swinging into city. It’s right after episode of tim drakes episode or right after clay face episode. Also jokers favor was the first broadcaster joker episode so it set the tone first regardless, but how you gonna say Christmas with the joker is lacking? That’s a top tier joker making jokes out of the worst situations and also hosts a holiday special broadcasting kidnapping commissioner Gordon and peers. Absolute gold.

7:20 will you do a video on this bankruptcy? I find it hard to understand how that could have happened as a key partner to an important show with a high budget? Then again, capitalism

I don’t think it would be enough to fill an entire video, but if I ever get around to doing a Mr Freeze video I could mention it then. Basically they agreed to be paid x amount per episode, and then they used too many resources (such as air brushing frost on Mr Freeze’s helmet in every single cel) and so they made no profit and went out of business!

i usually split on those episodes from one side they are cool archaeological adventures like indiana jones, uncharter and tomb raider, in another side Batman AIN'T indiana jones, uncharter and tomb raider. Yes the league of shadows stick is that they always all over the world and batman is always tracking them but i like them more when they are either the hand from daredevil or even the foot clan from ninja turtle (wich are a parody of the hand and the league) i like them more when they are a underground league that you never guess whats their next move is going to be? In batman beggins they were decent by having their own way to destroy gotham for their broken system, even in arkham city they have their own secret plan to destroy everything while having mistical elements like the pit of lazarus. In this episode they fell more like indiana jones villains and they are mostly motivate by greed, not really that complex for a show that made a lot of complex villains, which again if this was an indiana jones show then i would have beeing fine but since its batman i expected more

@@motor4X4kombat You’re absolutely right. It definitely wasn’t a usual Batman story. It took us on a journey. The idea was of Batman taking over the League. Which Daredevil actually did 25+ years after this series
