There’s just something so visually appealing about Dr. J’s dunk over Michael Cooper. It’s the perfect in-game dunk and the greatest I’ve ever seen. Should be no. 1 forever.

Amen. Some dunks are an amazing triumph over adversity, like a soldier slogging through rough terrain and enemy fire to capture a position against all odds. And then there are dunks that are like ballet, just oozing style and grace, making you think that gravity, and normal body mechanics, do not apply to the dunker.

+Spoken Gaming TV Agreed. Personally I think the Dr. J dunk on Michael Cooper is the most iconic dunk ever, but that Tom Chambers dunk is also iconic. Considering where Chambers took off from, then to almost have his KNEES at 6'5 Mark Jackson's HEAD is crazy. Then to top it off, Chambers looked like he rose even higher right before he dunked it. VERY impressive. I don't think some ppl realize HOW good Chambers was in his prime: over 27 PPG, over 8 RPG, very good shooter...and could dunk it on almost anyone.

I think two big issues come into play in putting Jordan's free throw dunk at #1. One, he wasn't the first to do so. Dr. J did it years before him. Two, while it is impressive and few can do it, it wasn't in a game-time situation. It was thought out ahead of time. He could get a running start, get his stride and feet work adjusted for the maximum amount of momentum and forward drive to do so. If he had done that in a game, there would never be a dunk that could rank above it ever. You are right about one thing. #1 did suck. What idiot ranked these?

I hope you know the old nba courts weren't as stable and had real glass in the finish. It would only take a quick powerful dunk to break them. Lebron, KD, and Blake griffin have all broken the backboard glass while being tested on the old courts. They tried to attempt to break the new force withstanding glass (which even a bus falling onto it couldn't break it) and did not succeed. Shaq breaking the glass is not much a milestone really.

I watched almost every Sonic game before Clay Bennett lied to the courts and stole them. Shawn had more talent than almost anyone ever but he would only excel for a few minutes at a time. If he had learned to use that talent for the full game every game he would have had numbers like Jordan. He was amazing but really amazing for short bursts!

Doc rock the cradle in the NBA Finals vs. Lakers is #1 IMHO. They also skipped his facial on Kareem as well. You could also argue Daryl Dawkins breaking backboards is at very least honorable mention. No Dominique Wilkins? Really? This generation missed some of the best NBA action of all time, not the football without pads and constant foul shots of today. Fast breaks were the reason I watched the highlights every night. Don't get me wrong, there are some incredible players today, just not the same as the 80's and 90's type of game.

Come on now be respectfull. Touching the rim by throwing it down is considered a dunk so Blake did technically dunk. And #1 although he elevates by steping on the defender, still is impressive to watch.

It's the one of the few on the list that's not : - a full 1/4 - 1/2 court run up, or - alley-oop/assisted, or - on someone equal height or shorter On top of that, it's the only one - besides Vince's - where the opponent is in a good position to block it...and he's chest to chest. I understand if, for you, it's not, but it'll always be in my Top 10

All awesome dunks. I was a Bulls fan in the 90's so of course I hated the Knicks. But I have to give credit where credit is due, John Starks dunk against the Bulls in the playoffs is still one of the best I have ever seen. This was actually a pretty good list considering how silly it is to really try and put a top ten list like this together but I would have to find room for Starks. Just my insignificant 2 cents worth. Really, nice job on this list though.

Anky Liu Why is that weird? He was a quality player - his career stats are on par with James Worthy - and was always a good leaper. That dunk shouldn't have been #1, but he jammed on a lot of people in his day (in the 80s, when the league talent pool was arguably at its highest too).

***** Nah, his eyes hardly reached the rim's level, but he seemed able to jump for longer if required and still dunk. Saying that, it is an ordinary dunk that should not be even in the Top50. The rest of the list is quite spectacular.

Newton Plays Well he jumped from closer to the FT line than the rim, and his eyes were still at rim level when he got there. It shouldn't be #1 but it's easily top 10 and better than a couple of other of these in the list.

This list should have been reversed. The degree of difficulty in Michael Jordan's dunk at #10 is Ridiculous!. First of all it was not a fast-break, New York had their half-court defense set (New York had one of the toughest defenses back then). Second Jordan had to shake two defenders off on a very tight baseline. And third after he shook those defenders he had to elevate over the 7 foot Patrick Ewing who was waiting for him, and dunk it. Level of difficulty = 1000. And at #9 with Dr J, almost every dunk he did has been copied, because before the ABA and NBA merged in 76, there were mostly boring dunks and people would knock you on the ground for trying to dunk unless you were big like Wilt Chamberlain. The emotional significance of that dunk he had over Michael Cooper cannot be measured. People in the audience were about to cry because they had heard about Dr. J for so long but the ABA never televised any games. So to see him cuff it and fly through the air and jam it like that was a spectacle. Ok I'm going to shutup now... I'm old.

He most certainly did. A dunk is simply defined as a shot where the player takes the entirety of the ball above the rim, and the ball moves downward for the duration of the shot. Blake's shot is clearly moving downward for the duration. A "slam dunk" simply adds the word "forcefully" in front of downward. Typically a dunker makes contact with the rim, but it is a growing trend not to. DeAndre Jordan does it all the time, throwing it down with two hands but pulling his hands to his hips really fast without contacting the rim. Besides, Blake does contact the rim, but Perkins pushes him backwards a bit so the contact is light. The downward force, however, is awesome, hence the Mozgov moment.
