I feel like the world was robbed of Stu Ungars brilliance as he was so good at cards and people were so afraid of him they wouldn't even play him in gin rummy. One year he amassed such a big chip in the main event that he didn't even compete in the last few days and blinded out 9th place. If he had lived another decade we could have seen his approach to the game with the hole card cams and some of the moves he was able to make against the best players in the biggest tournaments.

Totally agree. Wish we could have seen him play today. I believe he would have adapted to the new times and had an incredible edge already and with knowing the math of the game would have helped him pin down his opponents even more. In the sense that he would have known even more how others play and really narrow down their hands to one or 2 hands that they could have

He is the definition of the type of player that will drop tv ratings.

Doug Just an idea, but with reference to Stu Ungar I don't know if you know but there is a 'World series of Gin Rummy' in Vegas beginning of June - maybe you should enter and try and win?! Gin Rummy is not that complex a game - with your poker learning skills you could get a handle on it very quickly and have a great shot at the prize, and the competition itself seems quite small and not that competitive. Good for content?! Best
@anthonymatrone7970

From everything i have listened to and read about stu ungar i completely disagree w Kane. You cant trust one source, who he doesnt even name btw, that is talking badly about a player. Also, phil ivey was asked if he could play poker against anyone in history who would it be and he said stu, that speaks volumes. Stu was a child prodigy, his biography, One of a Kind, is a fascinating read.

I think we have to be careful about recency bias when it comes to constructing "Greatest of All-Time" lists. While it's a huge disadvantage to us that we can't view hands of the past masters, what should count heavily in the "Greatest of All-Time" list placement is people who have done well, against the best competition, for an extended period of time. A guy who's very good for a few years and then drops out of the game is not going to get as much credit from me as a guy who maybe didn't match the peak of the first guy, but has been able to sustain his success for a longer period of time. That doesn't mean every leather-assed grinder can be considered, however; you still need to be near the best at least in order to really be considered. Let's see if some of these younger, more recently successful players, with not that many years in the game, can SUSTAIN their level of play over a decade or two. Then, MAYBE, they can enter the consideration for "Greatest of All-Time".

I feel like Doug kept on hammering this "famous idols of poker get this advantage that helps them in large field poker tournaments" was frustrating because it is hard to quantify, and I was very happy to hear Kane Kalas push back on that effectively. It felt like he was discrediting a lot of the players from the older players because of this fact. Even if Ivey stopped playing poker for the rest of his life, his resume is unimpeachable.

they keep saying "is blah blah the best of all time. Its not the "whos the best player in the world" which is an impossible question to answer. Its a top 20 lists. To ask who is the most feared would be closer, then it could be an easy top 10 or even 5. To me Its Ivey, ungar is great but small sample in a weaker feild than today. Stu had uncanny abilities like Hellmuth or Ivey. Now if Stu was around these days its easily a solid yes or no. Not many scare players like ivey so if its fear its Ivey for me, but Stu is damn close too
@crowfeedreactions
@crowfeedreactions 10 месяцев назад
While I don't like Helmuth on a personality level (man-baby, truly), you absolutely have to give credit for his ability to maintain a high level of play over time. People burnout on poker because of the variance and because it's simply extremely difficult to keep that same level of WILL to play and to remain competitive when you've already "made it" and are financially secure from your winnings. Helmuth probably *is* the leader, or at least among the leaders, of total WSOP events entered, but that he's also WON the most bracelets justifies his place on this list. There are many more bracelets available to win now and the fact he's STILL the leader is something to be respected.

Feel Dwan doesn't get the credit here in terms of cash games. He is an icon of poker. Let's take a look at his achievements that we know of his live TV cash games. - Held the biggest cash game pot against Greenstein; Close to 1 million. - Beat his own TV record against Ivey - winning a $1million pot. - All time high stakes poker winner - biggest poker after dark winner - 3.1 million dollar pot won on live TV - let's not act like that wasn't a great call. Even Doug said he'd fold. Don't think you can achieve this without being a top 5 cash game player. Your thoughts Polk?

Of course a bunch of online guys are going to consider online the ultimate poker forum.. I disagree. Online takes out so many factors of the game. You don’t need a poker face, you don’t look for tells.. you can jump up and down when you have the nuts online and nobody knows. Online poker is just different. It’s like saying that because you can win an online car race against the best in the world in a NASCAR simulator, you’re the best race car driver in the world. Live poker results trump online results all day every day. And to act like the older players weren’t as good because they don’t use GTO.. remember, they were literally trying to think while they had a gun in their hand and legitimately prepared to be robbed at any minute. Playing in your underwear where no one can see you affords you luxuries they did not have.
