“You want to grip the gun as hard as you can without having it shake.” Thank you! That’s what I needed to know. Everyone says “grip it as hard as you can” I’m literally gripping my gun like I’m hanging on to a ledge with my life on the line. My gun is shaking like crap. What you said confirms my suspicions. Grip as hard as I can without the gun shaking…. Might seem dumb but I think that needs to be clarified for new shooters.

I was told the opposite..."the gun should almost come out of your hand. I shouldn't see any white knuckling. The non dominant hand should create a tea cup. Firing hand is the tea. When firing it should come up from recoil and settle back down..." I had horrible grouping, etc. I am so glad someone who can clearly shoot really well, cleared this stuff up. Can't wait to go back to the range. Happy shooting 😊

I don't think there is an ideal grip for all situations. As an extreme a grip appropriate for an auto loader would not be optimal for a SA revolver. The auto can actually malfunction if the grip is too loose while the SAA is designed for some roll on recoil. Consider also that the often ridiculed tea cup grip does result in less change in trigger and recoil response between single hand and two hand holds.

The Honest Outlaw Pistol Shooting Recommendations: 1. Hold pistol as tight as you can without shaking 2. Don’t lean forward (No tactical squat/lean) 3. Shoulders slightly up 4. Elbows slightly bent to act as shock absorbers 5. Tilt elbows slightly up to to push hands in 6. Squeeze down on the bottoms of hands 7. Pull trigger without disrupting sight alignment and taking pistol off sight picture 8. Pistol goes off when you want it to go off 9. Get used to shooting quickly 10. Honest Outlaw, nice job on this. Having said that, once you become as old as I am, if you stay with shooting long enough, you will find that you have been through several rounds of "new" techniques of shooting, with some guy characterizing what you have been taught in years past as "bullshit". While there is some folklore to this business, and much misunderstanding of what was originally meant by the advice, if you go back far enough to the types of weapons that were in predominant use, and the types of shooting being done at the time, most of the advice had some basis in reality. For example, going back the furthest, what you call the "tactical lean" (which I agree looks ridiculous) most likely comes from the old "FBI crouch", taught to almost every cop in this country up through the 70's. Back then, soft body armor was still a fantasy, and the idea was to minimize oneself as a target, or to "get small" if caught under fire in the open. We all knew back then that it didn't help our shooting at all. And at that time, moving and shooting was not typically something taught to police. Along those same lines, the widespread switch to the Isosceles stance decades ago was a function of the invention of body armor, which at the time only had ballistic coverage in the front and back, and was notoriously bad on side protection. So our friends at the FBI then told us to stand facing the target squarely so that if we did take a bullet, we'd take it in the vest. Again, not a modern day issue, but at the time it wasn't considered "bullshit". Also, just as an historical reference, the Weaver stance gained popularity due to its main proponent Jeff Cooper, of Gunsite Academy, who used it to good effect with the .45 ACP, as did Ross Seyfriend, who was an early IPSC World Champion. So did almost everyone else up through the 90's and it controlled recoil just fine when done correctly. The "80/20 grip" was part of teaching the isometric pressure between hands that the stance required. Clearly, if you are using the Isosceles stance, it isn't important at all. Trigger finger position is another one that had a basis in the kinds of shooting being practiced back in the day, as is the advice on the "surprise trigger break". Both of these nuggets come from NRA Bullseye shooting, which up to the 70's was the only handgun competition actually open to civilians. PPC events were cops only. Bullseye events used guns with extremely light single action triggers, often as light as 2 pounds. During that event, the Slow Fire stage was where you were going to make most of your points, and you had 10 minutes to fire 10 shots, so essentially all day. But, your X-ring at 50 yards was only 1.7 inches across. So, if you didn't get maximum feel with your trigger finger, and if the break didn't surprise you each time, you simply were not going to win. We had much the same issue in PPC, which was shot with double action revolvers at a target out to 50 yards, trying to hit an X-ring that was around 3 inches at its largest point. In that sport, we would switch to using the first joint of the index finger, which was called the "power crease" for leverage, because the rules required that we shoot double action. While it is true that the modern striker-fired pistol doesn't give a damn what part of your finger you use to pull the trigger, it used to matter a lot. So, I'm not in any way arguing about the advice given in your video, and you clearly can shoot very well, which is the true test of whether a technique works or not. I'm just saying that if you go back far enough, there were reasons why most of this stuff was valid at the time the advice was originally given, and the old-timers usually weren't bullshitting. It is just that weapons, shooting, and adjunct equipment have changed.

"Pull the trigger in which ever way works best for you"- that one really reminded me of Paul Harrel. And it is nice to hear a professiional say, that not everybody is able to use the same part of their finger to pull the trigger, I mean it is even hard to use the same partof one's finger when switching from single action to double action.
@onpsxmember
@onpsxmember 4 года назад
I see the position of the finger on the trigger as slight adjustment to match one's hand size and finger length to the distance from the heel of the grip to trigger's neutral position. One can manage a straight back pull of the trigger in various positions but there is one that makes it simpler, less prone to push side to side during the trigger press just based on what part of the finger we move and what we keep still (keeping grip pressure consistent I see as given). So if there is a chance to change the distance from trigger to the backstrap, either by different grips, straps or in some cases changing the position of the trigger can help to find a preference that gives the best results after one has trained long enough to be sure that other factors were not an issue in the shooting results. In extreme cases you see some shooting with the tip of their finger and being exhausted quickly or some that almost make a regular fist being close to the second joint. I'd just look for a gun that...fits my hand better. There is such a variety out there to choose from. Whatever brings consistently better results, and no weird pain is preferable.

Not all hands and fingers were created equal. I can show people what works best for me but I worked on various styles(fads) over the years and found a style that works equally well with DA revolvers and semi auto handguns. Its not the current tacticool with thumb forward unless you want to greatly heighten your risk of amputation.

I'm a new ish shooter myself, about a year. The 2 things I've learned are 1st don't listen to a single thing people at gun shops tell you, it's all bullshit. And 2nd (after establishing good grip) the most important thing is practice. Practice consistently. I can't afford to go out every day. So I shoot every week. It seems counter intuitive to shoot say 100 rounds (that's probably 30 minutes) once a week, vs 2 hours once a month. But it makes a huge difference. Because between you can see what went wrong, dry fire practice, and get tips from trusted sources for next time. I've noticed HUGE improvements when I started doing those 2 things

In addition to finger length another variable is the trigger. For example for my Glock using the pad of my finger works fine. For my CZ I prefer the use the joint of my finger, since the trigger has a longer pull before going off. For my 1911 or my Beretta (where trigger is almost touching the grip when the gun goes off) I like to push my finger all the way in. Doing this instead of insisting to use the pad part increased my accuracy and helped me generate that firm but steady squeezing trigger pull.

The point about stance is really driven home by Pat Mac's motto, "train like you fight". Very few situations will give you time to get into a stance. Many situations won't even give you time to get a proper grip. Worrying so much about stance like some people do is just pointless.
@jeffumbach

I agree, I've tired a lot of stances and have found that grip is far more important and making fixes to it alleviated most of my issues that persisted across different stances. Even then in an actual defense situation what's important is being able to hit center of mass without trying, even with a "bad" stance.

Really good tips you don’t catch from too many reviewers. They eventually end up standing straight up and standing naturally.
@natcam4549
@natcam4549 4 года назад
Yea same here. I don't know why they do that but it seems to be very common. It seems like a lot of ppl don't want to hold a handgun very tight either. I mean to be an average shooter you don't have to death grip it but come on you know you want real "gun control."😂😂😂
@stelioeffrena1571
@stelioeffrena1571 4 года назад
NatCam 454 I’m pretty sure new shooters lean back because they are not used to the idea of having a mini explosion going off in their hands. It’s an instinctive reaction from the brain because it perceives “danger” and wants to get some distance from it. Same thing for the loose grip, the brain perceives danger and wants to be able to get rid of it quickly if necessary. Ultimately shooting is about overriding a lot of bad instincts from the body, and getting it used to the fact that shooting a firearm is “safe”. With that said, new shooters can definitely benefit from a solid isosceles stance, once they get better it becomes less and less important.

Doesn't matter much for range plinking and comps but in a LorD scenario, you never know of you're going to lose a dominant hand or eye. Same goes for hand-to-hand. We train like we'll always have 2 good arms and 2 good legs. This isn't how reality works. You may be wounded and still be in the fight. Train like you may have to fight.

Lol. Marine Corps taught that tactical squat. We called it the Groucho walk. Leaning forward was for recoil management, the squat was to literally duck bullets. We were told that the average flight of bullets was something like 5'3"and the squat was meant to come in lower than that. We practiced this so much. I'd rather take a round in the sapi plate than to not get low enough and take one in the face.

As a professional trainer who has taught many inexperienced shooters, this is the most effective way I know to help people become comfortable with the shot breaking, which is almost every new shooter, and more "I've been shooting with my dad since I was in diapers" shooters than you'd think. Do top tier shooters do it? Of course not, but most people who resist this are not top tier shooters. And if you're following your weapon safety rules, your weapon should never be pointed in an unsafe direction, so even if it goes off due to an act of god it will be safe. We had a round cook-off into a trainer's foot overseas because he wasn't obeying that rule, great learning opportunity for the 150 Marines we were training.

So true on many fronts. I’m not a trainer but I’ve helped some new owners understand basic concepts and I’ve never focused too much on the 80/20 or any crazy stance. We try everything until that person if comfortable and has the best accuracy. Everyone is different and no one person shoots exactly the same. As for the slow trigger pulls, I’ve only done that with a long rifle where breathing really comes into play as well. Long precision has different rules.

I like the fact you tell shooters to find what works best for them with trigger pull/finger placement on the trigger. A lot of this video reminded me of being on my old bowling league with 120 bowlers and having friends ask me how they need to set up/throw the ball and I would tell them "here are 120 ways to do the same thing," everyone has their own quirks, their own style. I'm not going to say one is better than the rest, because hell look at the pros- no two are exactly alike. In both bowling and shooting, accuracy and repeatability are key and minor adjustments make for big changes down range/lane.

I agree with you on all 5 of those Bull $hit "tips"!! When I was in high school I was taught to shoot by my neighbor who was just back from serving in Vietnam; Army Special Forces. We went out to abandoned strip mines for practice. I learned to shoot on the move, around cover: focused at a point on the target; pulled the trigger the split second I was on target. Speed was life! Head up and on a swivel...YES. Stance did not matted as much as keeping your balance (when possible), and always focused on the target with your eyes/brain. I heard you say in another video that you were not tactical; well smart good quick is tactical and training to the point that you can shoot/fight as a reflex....train till you develop that reflex. Good Job!!

I learned the hard way about shooting stance when I attended a 8 hour class at a Tactical shooting course Level -2 and quickly discovered that for the first time in my life that I was going to have to walk (sometimes quickly) both forward / backwards and right to left , lying on your side shooting underneath a shopping cart at targets 20-25 yards away with a A/R , with a instructor yelling in my ear Target 3 , 7 ,1 5 and expecting me to hit decently , wow what a wake up call , I had spent 55 years , now 63 years shooting standing still and usually from a bench rest and to make the whole thing even more embarrassing , I was the only beginner in the class , with some shooters that did it 3 times a year and my Son-n-Law who did three tours in Iraq on a Marine Corp. entry team ran the course with precision and was by far the best shooter with both M-4 and pistol , oh well it 's good to learn humility it builds character !

Stances are for guys at the range shooting for dollars with their buddies. Real life....up on the balls of your feet for movement..and most important...learn to point and shoot with one hand. When you stand and point at something with your index finger, it is dead center. Your gun should be your index finger for a quick point and shoot. Learn this, it may save your life in bad fast moving situation.

I've taught friends and family how to shoot. I start them off with a strong foot stance mainly to help them build confidence while they're new, not necessarily because it's of any tactical importance. The psychological benefit of planting your feet while you brace for your first taste of recoil helps overcome some of the early apprehension that a beginner may have.

100% grip isn’t necessary depending on your technique. If you use a clamp grip where your pressure is generated from you hands - then obviously more is better - but you can still achieve flat shooting with little hand strength if you use a push pull. I did a clamp very similar to yours but switched to a push pull recently and my dot tracking improved and I lost nothing on recoil management

When teaching my brother how to shoot, I told him to grip his pistol like a vise, and use the stance he's most comfortable with. I personally put my left foot forward about 6", and pull my pistol up to my dominant eye. I also use palm swell grips, as most thinner grips put the pad of my finger way past the trigger. (Usually past the knuckle) and is very uncomfortable. To me, it's mostly about grip strength, and comfortability. Never switch to something uncomfortable, just to try and shoot better. I practice moving draws at home, just to keep myself prepared. My brother got insanely good at using his index finger to pivot between targets accurately, and pulling the trigger with his middle finger.
