@@wesstapley This was the first video I watched after my monthly, and mandatory, welcome to night vale-binge listen, and was suprised to see that the weirdly funny writing style had continued. There are like 120 episodes out now, your dream of listening to advertisements told in a certain, dry, yet funny way can be fulfilled!
Unfortunately, lifegain only hast that pay off... I have an atalya deck which gains TONS of life, but it does nothing with said life... We really need a better way to spend life on something... Except for the reservoir and the "win if you have over X life", gaining life does nothing
Wow as a target demographic I'm really excited for this content. Hopefully soon I'll be able to enjoy this counterculture video with a comfortable pair of wireless earbuds.
Hahaha amazing that they gave you so much freedom for the ad! It had me in stitches. Usually people just read of the boring prewritten scripts, but this was great!
Hey everyone, would mean a great deal if you took a minute to click and watch my newest video, "The Proper Pauper Guide To Budget Hexproof" here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n834iSgwkFE.html
@@jo_ken please no. Cyclonic rift is busted because you can do it on the turn before yours and combo/attack on a clean board. Instant in white means your aggro deck just slaughters your opponents out of nowhere
@@jo_ken Honestly cyclonic rift is annoyingly good. Even though I would want white to get serious upgrades I don't want it to just be white versions of the most broken cards in other colors. That would be lame imho.
Smothering tithe is amazing ramp and would be a very close second in my opinion. It's a good addition to all decks but there is better mana ramp via; Exploration, Mana Crypt. However Swords is the best single target removal spell and most efficient, 1 mana at instant speed exile.
@@broadcast7183 The prof prefaced the video by saying that this is a list of best cards in all decks including white, from mono white to five colour Ur Dragon
Just got my smothering tithe, got it from a booster pack no less! Super excited for the future of white in commander! Wizards better come through in commander legends
This is undoubtedly my favorite ad read I have ever encountered and makes me love the product and ad more than one that would disingenuously push the product.
I have never been more pleased to sit through a two minute shill. This was in fact so funny, I might even have to buy a pair of those earbuds to ensure that the shilling continues!!
Personally I'm missing "winds of abandon", a one generic more costly "path to exile" with the overload option to effectively path to exile every creature you don't control.
That Sponsorship bit was delightfully awkward and funny. I absolutely love it. Not often a Sponsorship bit can make me press like... but you somehow succeeded. Great job!
Odric, Lunarch Marshal was my first Commander deck. It usually gets underestimated at the table due to it being mono white, but I still love the satisfaction that comes with getting a crazy keyword soup board state with it and smacking face. Wrathing and then equipping Avacyn, Angel of Hope with Worldslayer to ensure that no one gets to do anything always brings a sadistic pleasure, and in mono white I will take all the sadistic pleasure I can get.
You should totally do an updated version of this video. White’s come a long way over the past year or two. In my opinion, it’s pretty much fixed. The color could probably get a couple more tools in its arsenal, but it’s not really that bad anymore.
Fun combo with Feather as a commander: have token generation and path to exile. "Once per turn, pay one white mana, sacrifice a creature, search your library for a basic land card and put it onto the battlefield tapped." ;)
He also missed Thalia's Lancers, my favourite white tutor. "Legendary card" covers many incredibly powerful options, one being any planeswalker. It's 5 cost but is a 4/4 first strike and can be recurred/blinked like any other creature.
@@TheMightyBattleSquid Equipment is white specialty but white isn't limited to equipments. When he said he wasn't including annointed procession, which care about tokens, which are "white's specialty", it's precisely those kind of cards he wouldn't mention.
I'm a fan of Ghostly Prison in any EDH deck with white, OK not as powerful as the 8 you've shown Prof, but I love the fact it puts your opponents off attacking you for a while.
My prediction: Path to exil Swords to plowshares Teferi's protection Alms collector Enlightened Tutor Aven mind censor Smothering tithe Grand abolisher
@@sallomon2357 You'll be surprised at how few draw effects actually net you 2 or more cards at once, almost everything is 1 card at the time, which this does nothing against. It's been a complete dud in every deck I've run it in.
Smothering Tithe is one colorless too expensive from being the greatest white card printed since swords. It's still understandable for the #1 spot, and I'm surprised, and glad you did. Bold pick
My first commander deck was a 5 color. I put smothering tithe in and it came out early. So I got to see its power on full display. Since then, smothering tithe has been in every deck I build that uses white.
This video was very fun! :D gave me stuff to think about when looking at tuning up my Nahiri deck to be actually competitive. Like. Adding in a *win condition*. I didn't even know that card existed! Which is probably part of why my deck has jank answers to things like *scourglass* lol. I look forward to the next video! Thank you for the wonderfully educational content :D
My favorite white commander is michiko konda. The fact she makes my opponent sacrifice stuff is so cool and a pretty cool out of nowhere bomb. Also, a very slept on white card is comeuppance. It's actually really good and can help close a game up
I'd consider Dawn of Hope a must run, if only for the much needed card draw. On top of that it synergizes with Skull Clamp and puts up defense when needed.
Fun fact: Nev's disc doesn't sac itself as a part of activation so you can activate it and in response Teferi's protection thus saving the disc for later use.
Hey prof!!! Any chance you could go over must have accessories for a new commander player? And maybe a look at shuffling techniques for a commander deck? Your vids brought me to MTG and I'm in love now!!! Thank you so much!
Man, I would love for Teferi's Protection to come down in price. It's such an amazing and versatile card, and the only one from your list that I don't own yet. Maybe I need to just bite the bullet and go for it.
When the 2017 commander decks came out it took me a few weeks but I bought one of each of them. $45 ish for each one from my local Wal-Mart. Almost shit myself when I opened the Vampiric Bloodlust deck and saw all the great cards in it. Almost shit myself again just now seeing that the deck is going for 150$ to 200$ on the net!!! Good luck and I would say just bite the bullet and get the card.
I'm pretty new to the game... but, i put an extra planar lense in my deck and it was really cool! That combined with endless horizons worked amazing and i was dropping a subjugation angel followed by a sunblast angel in the same turn and people were not amused.
My “mono” white commander is shalai for obvious advantage in my mostly angel based deck. With mana rocks that tap for any color to possibly use her ability.
Sephara, skys Blade is a really fun deck. It’s a three fold strategy, first spam cheap flyers and mana rocks. Then cheat your commander into play and suit her up with equipments for 1 shot potential. Lastly board wipe creatures every turn as yours will be indestructible 90% of the time.
First, one honorable (or dishonorable) mention for a must have white card for Commander: Blind Obedience. It slows down your opponents ramp and beat down strategies, costs only two mana, and even gives you a mana dump for later in the game when you're casting your spells. As far as the commanders go, Odric, Lunarch Marshal is great for learning both how to play MTG and Commander with learning your evergreen abilities.
I haven't put a full list together and there has probably been new tricks for the deck since I last thought about it, but I have always wanted to make a weird deck based around Kentaro, The Smiling Cat. Some kind of strategy that makes white spells/samurai cheaper then use cloudstone curio to return samurai to recast for free and get a lot of use of effects that care about creatures being cast or entering the battlefield
I would have to say that one of my must include in a commander deck of white is Serra ascendant. It could be a turn one flying lifelink 6/6 powerful card presence and puts your opponents into a scramble to answer
I’ve always liked the card authority of the consuls. 1 drop white enchantment taps opponents creature that enter the battlefield and u gain 1 life for each creature entered this way. That a lot of value early on
Mana Tithe and Rebuff the Wicked are added in many many commander decks i own - many forgets having 1 white open can lead to a counter or.. a Path or Swords :)
My pick for White us a pet card of mine, Victory's Herald. A 6 mana card, 3 white 3 generic for a 4/4 Angel that reads "Whenever Victory's Herald attacks, attacking creatures gain flying and lifelink until the end of the turn." It is all about attacking but when you want to get in with creatures that gain you life and get flying to boot, it is ckearly a good choice for any kind of deck that is just white or has white in it.
While Anointed Procession isn't a must have for all decks, I am thankful you pointed that my way, seeing as I plan on running an Alela EDH deck and she'd like all the tokens from bitterblossom, Sai, and herself. Gladly just got myself a 4th Edition Swords to Plowshares, and Smothering Tithe comes with her precon. Also: If I didn't already have nice wireless headphones (Marley,) those raycons would be tempting
Oreskos Explorer can be pretty powerful for White in Commander, and particularly so if you're running mono white. It's not quite Land Tax but it does a suitable impression. And it doesn't hurt that it's pennies to pick up.
Tragic Arrogance is one of my most played white cards in my decks. It gets rid of each kind of permanent gets around hexproof and saves your most importent stuff. -> PROFit
I would argue that Slaughter The Strong is a better board wipe, as it gets around indestructible as well. Glad Approach got an honorable mention, too. Easily my favorite card.
Best white commanders in my opinion are Sram and Teshar which are the only two i can think of that provides you some sort of card advantage which is the main problem for white in commander! Anyhow i definitely agree on the list: you got all points!
I do play a MonoWhite commander actually - Kemba, Kha Regent Mostly Cat Tribal, with some subthemes of Soldier synergies, and of course LOADS of Equipment.
Even though Teferi's Protection is a great card. It's expensive..and yet people can respond before you phase out. Like how Josh did that Teferi's protection/smothering tithe combo.
Knight of the White Orchid! How did that not at least get an honorable mention? I also looked through a couple hundred comments and didn't see anyone mention it. A 2 mana 2/2 with first strike that puts an untapped land on the battlefield for you! Not only that, it specifically grabs plains. So it can get some dual-type lands and put them into play untapped for you! That's incredibly good ramp value, specially considering it's in white.
You can quickly see how powerful Smothering Tithe becomes if you watch the episode of Game Nights that Josh plays Smothering Tithe and then a wheel effect. The one he played made it so everyone discards their hand and draws 7 (aka 21 treasures if other players can't pay for it in a normal 4 player game), but even if you have one that makes everyone draw 4 cards is still pretty dang good. Smothering tithe should easily be the number 1 pick for any white deck.
I think Authority of the Consuls is a solid include in most Commander decks, it can slow down your opponents a lot and the incidental lifegain is quite nice. I was a little surprised that you didn't mention Cleansing Nova at all. It's less flexible than Austere Command but I think for one mana less it does a reasonable impression.
