ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY, HUMBER, LANCHESTER, LEA FRANCIS, SUNBEAM TALBOT, etc.? In 1948 there were 36 MAKES of British cars, NOT Models ! the daimlers shown were jag products, Daimler is the oldest British marque, independant until 1960.

Absolutely ! An utterly pathetic selection of examples from each brand, clearly indicating to me that whoever was responsible for the compilation has a very shallow appreciation of his subject matter . Jowett, Crossley, Singer, are another three notable absentees .

Actually, before Daimler was acquired by Jaguar, it was owned by BSA (Birmingham Small Arms), the arms and motorbike manufacturers, who had also taken over Lanchester in the early 1930s. In the 1930s they badged their top of the range cars as Daimlers, mid range as Lanchester, and the cheapest and simplest as BSAs.

@gilgameshofuruk4060
@gilgameshofuruk4060 3 года назад
@@shannon7002 It wasn't the majority of unions. Mainly it was the unions in nationalised industries, predominantly British Leyland, who abused their power. In those days most industry was run by managers who had worked their way up through the companies and worked closely with the unions for mutual benefit. For example the ceramics union ensured a decent level of pay for their members, paid holidays and never took strike action. British Leyland however called a strike when two men were sacked for taking sleeping bags with them for the night shift. I got into an argument with someone from a union in a nationalised industry once when I said that people in other industries were losing their jobs. Her reply was "It's not my fault if they don't care enough to go on strike to fight fur their jobs". She would not listen when I said that the managers were struggling as much as the workers to keep the factories going and that a strike would merely result in lost trade. Unions are vital to ensure the well-being of workers. I have seen what poor safety standards do. So it wasn't "The unions" it was _some_ unions. But the ultimate blame lies with Callaghan's Labour government for not reigning in the bad unions, which in turn led to the destruction of manufacturing in Britain at the hands of the Tories.

Destroyed by a series of strikes in 1960 at its stampings plant in Acton, and a clumsy attempt by Harold Wilson to pass the whole problem over to Chrysler. But Chrysler also bought an ailing French car company, and unlike the British companies, the French company was not being destroyed by its workers. Nevertheless Chrysler could not make one good car company out of multiple bad ones. And soon it had its own problems in the USA. The whole enterprise was sold to Peugeot (for ten dollars, I think). I thought Chrysler's Talbot Tagora was a smart-looking vehicle, But Peugeot only wanted the factory space to make more Peugeots. Very sad. But most countries which dabble with socialism have even more tragic endings than the loss of well-respected car-marques. We got off lightly.

@@MostEasterlySteve Have you not noticed National Socialism in Germany, the communism in Russia, China, Albania, North Korea, Belarus, Cuba, etc etc etc. And it's NEVER the fault of the socialists. He WAS a believer in socialism, and his desire was to install a soviet-like system in Britain. He’s starting with the military, and some of the innovations are amazing. Including, laser guns, the rocket sabre engine, and artificial intelligence. A lot of these innovations will filter down into civilian manufacturing, and maybe Coventry will play an important part in that regeneration. 🇬🇧

OH not this tired old tale...Most of theses companies..and none more so than BL were run by entitled public school posh boys / retired army officers who really had no right to be in industry at all. You wanna read the accounts of the impresiions of French and German management counterparts who met with many of the directors and managers of British car and motorbike companies...they were all too often astonished atthe lack of foresight and imagination shown by often drunken, boorish, arogant idiots who killed the companies they managed. The unions played their role, but do some reading about how these companies collapsed. The ones that did, did so because they were INCREDIBLY badly managed by bufoons. HOWEVER, many of the names, the ones that were well manged didn't go defunt, they went in different and often very profitable directions, notably Alvis and Armstrong Siddeley. Bristol was unionised, didn't stop them being a success...because it was a well run company. Read the history of Triumph motorcycles and weep.

With it's beautiful Roadster airflow lines, and central headlight, it looked like nothing, that i'd seen before, Bright Red, cream interior ,gleaming chrome. I now know they were mainly designed for the American Market. But typical British thinking, the engine was under-powered, for such a great sporty-looking Car, and therefor, a sales failure.

Could do the same with British motorcycles. Norton came back briefly, now gone again, maybe. Only re born Triumph survive in significant numbers, though most made overseas now.
@johnbrereton5229
@johnbrereton5229 3 года назад
Triumph like most manufacturers have parts and bikes made all over the world, but they are headquartered here in the UK and have a large factory here. Norton has just built a brand new state of the art factory in Solihull and are now recruiting. We also have Ariel, AJS, Hesketh, Greeves, Aston Martin motorcycles. The UK has a rich history of great engineers both in cars and motorcycles, but it's not just historical its here today and into the future.

@johnbrereton5229 3 года назад
@@petew5289 Tata does not own Triumph motorcycles, they are owned by the Englishman John Bloor and have 6 factories around the world, 2 in the UK, 3 in Thailand and 1 in Brazil. However, the don't have any in India at all. MG cars are owned by SAIC motor Corperation based in China but they still have an assemble plant in the UK, but again not in India as you claimed.

A sad story of lack of investment, poor management and Bolshevik workers. Yet we produced some great cars and when you look at BMC in the sixties everybody is now producing cars on the same chassis and badge engineering. Still we can have fond memories.

Unionism is alive and well at JLR, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Toyota, Nissan U.K. and all are doing well It is British management that is the cause of failures not unions, governments, recessions, look at British Steel, aviation, ICI, rail industry, all gone or foreign owned and managed!

@@MrDaiseymay Correct Philip, the union rep. Derek Robinson was the main culprit, along with a weak Labour government, ( beer and sandwiches at No.10 with the top union officials) and weak management, who can forget the appalling standards of cars leaving British Leyland. One motoring correspondent once said, every car coming out of Longbridge is a “ Friday” car, meaning cars made on a Friday were poorly constructed due to the workers looking forward to the weekend.

As usual the demise of U.K manufacturing can be put down to a number of things and it's usually incompetent management bad industrial relations and unwillingness to modernize.

Both designed by Pininfarina in the late 50s, so it's maybe not surprising. It was not unknown for car design studios to design several different slightly different body shells at one go, then hawk them round to manufacturers.
