@jamiemoran9333 Don't forget, Mick Lynch and Eddie Dempsey were & still are both Brexit supporters (both Brexit voters) Sad but true. They're like all Brexiters, they've shot themselves in the foot and then they start wondering why they are limping and losing blood and now they can't find any of those promised cheap shoes that will fit their swollen bandaged & mangled feet. And to rub salt in the wound, they even encouraged their union members and work colleagues to also vote for Brexit. So if these two union leaders were to join a political party it would probably be Reform UK. If God exists then, God help us!

The privatisation of everything we saw go from public to private hands over the last few decades has been disasterous for everyone except for those companies making vast profits and not reinvesting it in our infrastructure and services. Whether it's transport, water or energy we've seen prices go up but quality, investment and availability go down. And I don't think this was an oversight when privatisation took place, they knew that it would funnel huge sums of public money into the already wealthiest's hands. It wasn't a bug, it was a feature.
@michaelfoy
@michaelfoy 3 месяца назад
TOTALLY Disasterous! It was ALL undersold to private companies....The Electricity board Showrooms in my area were sold for £1 each!! To get rid...over 2000 Staff made redundant, including my wife and I....Father in Electricity distribution and Gas engineer brother....Once our industries WERE privately owned....The WHOLE former Ethos of Customer service went out of the window It became ALL about PROFITS....Customers just a means of generating profits....AS did the former Apprenticeship training that turned out hundreds of highly qualified Engineers, plumbers and Electricians Every year! The Promised "Private Investment " NEVER happened....just like in the Water/sewage/Railways industries....the WHOLE project was A TOTAL TORY Rip -off....and only made a LOT of people VERY Rich....at everyone else's expense!.

The phrase 'they knew exactly what they were doing' has never been more apt, verging on if not actually criminal, selling PUBLIC (and in some cases such as water natural) assets for others to PROFIT from, and did it lead to good outcomes?.... Be warned too, some politicians would and will go further down that road if they could/can.

Yes it affected a lot of P&O workers in Hull since then one of the routes has not returned to service from the Port of Hull, we only have Hull to Netherlands now not Hull to Belgium offered which will have reduced visits to the Port of Kingston Upon Hull. When they are at sea the minimum wage law does not count as they are not on land! Inflation figures don't include everything people buy and lower priced owned brand stuff has continued to increase more than luxury products in terms of food and non-food.
@paullegend6798
@paullegend6798 3 месяца назад
What laws should apply in international waters? Answer, no easy answer. It does feel like workers from the UK, should be employed under UK laws. A loophole to close. What workers do need to realise is PO competes internationally. So if rules are put on them but not competitors from other countries, they will likely go out of business, undercut by competitors that don't play by the same laws. Then there are no jobs, worrying about the pay and conditions a moot point. Or all the jobs go to staff employed at the other end of the routes where the rules are less stringent. How you fix that idk. Presumably alignment between governments to ensure same rules apply to all. How do you get that done... again idk. Like a lot of things, moving beyond a cursory glance and the issue is complex.
@JamJam0189
@JamJam0189 3 месяца назад
If is complex and the likes of Reform UK offer no solutions, but the fact is the government have not done anything since the P&O incident. As for competitors in Hull there are no other passenger shipping companies, also some of these foreign workers may be hard working but lack good communication skills in English and are being exploited with lower pay and long hours. An agreement across borders would be more likely on main issues if the UK had not left the EU, but many of these workers are not from Europe though as they would not put up with the pay. @@paullegend6798

I and many others got sacked by P&O in 1988, whilst on a legitimate industrial action. The ILO, which is part of the UN, stated that we were unlawfully sacked. We waited for a Labour government and nothing, The RMT, of whom I was a member of at that time have done nothing for us, nor did a Labour government. Why should it be different now? Nothing will happen for these people and if it does, what about the people from the 88\89 strike? Perfect timing of a Thames Water van passing just after 4:45, very much a case in point. Also as some commentators have pointed out the hidden devil in the detail of how asset inflation is often ignored in inflation, one of the biggest ways the rich are getting ever richer at the expense of everyone else- make sure most people cannot afford such assets so most people get poorer to your benefit. These assets can impact other aspects of wealth/poverty such as housing which is increasingly a cave of gold for the rich to hoard away to everybody else's cost. Even saving is moving out of the realms of realistic possibility for many. Greed is now so out of hand that sadly far far worse may be yet to come. Bare minimum wages, people who work full time who cannot afford any real quality of life (but they've got their turnips and cheese sarnies so that's o.k. isn't it?) Enough is enough, a lot of things have to change.
