The Toy Sampler That Inspired Generations of Musicians

The Casio SK-1 was my very first electronic music instrument that allowed for some degree of experimentation. Its crunchy 8BIT sound got me hooked in a way that shaped my entire music career. 25 years later and with a bunch of SK-1 inspired instruments incoming on Kickstarter, I wanted to revisit this beautifully crappy sampler.

Excellent vid as always. The SK-1 was my first foray into sampling in 86. I still have it and I guess that's why I bought a Liven LoFi12 recently. It's amazing how many people started their love of synths with a simple Casio keyboard. Without Casio I would never be the pauper that I am today.

I miss my old SK-1. Another Casio I wish I hadn’t gotten rid of. But it went to a good cause, the kids I looked after in an after school program were having so much fun with it that I thought they would get more use out of it than I would, so I donated it to the program.

Back when it came out, an affordable portable sampling keyboard was amazing, including what now in this advanced computer age is no big deal: play your sample in REVERSE ( I'm thinking of the SK-5 with finger pads it turns out ). Also a fun thing to do with it was to sample a chord of a live instrument like a piano, and you could play one finger chords on it. Though of course it is definitely a Low-Fi instrument, people should keep that in mind. I recall making a sitar-like sound by sampling plucking a guitar string with a piece of metal buzzing against it.

I have a nice collection of these types of keyboards. Sk 1 + 5 and the Vss 30 and vss 200. Powerhouses of keyboards. They all have their charm and the vss 30 is in a league of it's own but the Sk-1 is just so damn inspirational

Greetings Professor Hainbach! I've been using the SK-1 in my music and on my albums since I was 7 years old when my older brother gave me one that he traded for a snowboard. I use the sampler to sample parts of my own recorded song tracks and then I reintroduce them into the mix; sometimes treating the sampled audio with time effects. Die Wiederaufbereitung.

I bought the Yamaha VSS-30 brand new as one of my earliest instruments in late 1987, and I still have and use it today. A year or two later I did some fairly geeky bandwidth comparisons between it and the SK-1, and was quite disappointed to find the SK-1 simply truncated all waveform data above around 9khz, while the VSS-30 could be turned into a crunchy nightmare through extreme EQ and a noise gate. The VSS-30 is also dramatically more flexible with its "in-camera" sample editing capabilities, and ability to alter the amp envelope of all built-in sounds. I had little interest in the SK-1 from that point on.
@treetopjones737
@treetopjones737 7 месяцев назад
The Casio had little amp envelope presets that you could switch on for a sample ( like a bit extra Release - at least the SK-5 did ), extremely limited.
@apislapis
@apislapis 7 месяцев назад
Putting the two machines into context, I recall the VSS-30 was much more expensive than the SK-1 (which I bought new for only £69.00 in 1986). You get what you pay for. The Yamaha is a much more capable machine and I confess that I wanted a VSS-30 back in the 80s. Bear in mind the maker of the WoFi didn't quote the VSS-30, choosing the SK-1 instead as his inspiration. I find the charm of the SK-1 is its limitations and I've been a fan of Casiotones since the VL-1. The SK-1 is as important to me as my Akai S3000XL, both being old tech I've used on my musical journey.

@@apislapis£69 and $99 were very comparable prices during that time period. Each keyboard was the entry-level in each line-up. 😄
@apislapis
@apislapis 7 месяцев назад
@@tonverfall_studio I think you are comparing apples with pears. I'm not sure that $99 equated to a price of £99 here in the UK for a VSS-30. £69 for the Casio was a week's wages for me back in '86, which I do remember being the economic reality for me in spite of both models being bottom of the range. We didn't have the luxury of YT and we couldn't easily compare the spec of both models, on the web, we had to wait until they were reviewed in magazines in the UK such as E&MM, One Two Testing or International Musician & Sound Maker. Glad you're happy with your VSS-30 and I'm still pleased with my SK-1 after all these years.
