The Toyota 2000GT was the fastest brand-building halo ever | Revelations with Jason Cammisa | Ep. 25

Toyota's 2000GT was one of the fastest cars in history. Its 16 international and world endurance-speed records have nothing to do with it: the Yamaha-built Toyota 2000GT did for Toyota in eight short years what took Hyundai more than three decades: it catapulted Toyota from the laughingstock maker of Japanese curiosities (like the 1958 Toyopet Crown) to the esteemed manufacturer of a Porsche-beating supercar.
Set out to be a world-beater, the 2000GT had the Jaguar E-Type in its sights (and its long hood) but the Lotus Elan under its skin. With a backbone chassis inspired by (read: shamelessly stolen from) the Lotus, the 2000GT competed directly with the best sports cars of its time.
In fact, its spec sheet reads like the best sports cars from decades later - with a 7000-rpm twin-cam engine, fully synchronized 5-speed manual, 4-wheel disc brakes, limited-slip differential, rack-and-pinion steering, and 4-wheel independent suspension with double wishbones at each corner.
The intricately and beautifully appointed interior features Rosewood and Mahogany woods finished by Yamaha's musical instrument division.
Its exterior design is often incorrectly attributed to Albrecht Goertz, but was in fact done internally at Yamaha and Toyota, with some inspiration taken from the Yamaha A5500X spec-built show car. Its similarities to the Datsun 240Z (Nissan S30 Fairlady) are unmistakable - but are the result of two cars designed in roughly the same era and with the same goals. Though let one thing be perfectly clear: the Toyota 2000GT cannot be a copy of the Nissan Fairlady Z; it came first.
In some ways, the 2000GT is the first Lexus, as it mirrors very closely the Lexus LF A: both had heavily influence from Yamaha, both were priced above their competitors, and worked as brand halos to catapult their markers reputations.
Learn about the history of the magnificent Toyota 2000GT here, in this episode of Revelations, researched, written, and hosted by Webby-award-winning automotive journalist Jason Cammisa.

I was stationed at Peral Harbor sub base in 1968. Every time I took public transportation from the base into Honolulu I had to make a transfer in front of a Toyota dealership. In that dealership was a 2000GT. I dreamed of owning that car, Msrp was over $7,000, a Corvette was $4500. 50 years later the 2000gt is worth over 1 million dollars. Still can't afford one.

Didn’t know if you knew how the Bond convertible 2000GT came about. The movie needed for Connery to be able to enter and exit the car quickly. With Connery being tall, and you knowing how snug that cockpit is, EON Studios sent the car back to Toyota and suggested that they would use an E type instead. Toyota asked for 24 hours to come up with a solution. They returned to the movie set with the stunning convertible used in the movie! Pretty amazing! It is the only 2000GT Toyota ever created.

One fun story about the 2000GT is how it's central to a rivalry between Pete Brock and Carroll Shelby. BRE was supposed to get the contract to race these in SCCA against 911s and so forth, but Shelby flew to Tokyo and convinced Toyota brass to change horses mid-stream. First thing Brock heard about it was when the cars showed up at Shelby's garage. So, with some Datsun Roadsters he'd secured direct from Japan via a previous connection with Hino, Brock went looking to spoil Shelby's plans. The Roadsters ran in a different class, but they would slow up the 2000GTs on the racing line, while letting their rivals by. Toyota lost the SCCA championship, packed up, and didn't return to sportscar racing for ages. There's a green-and-yellow record car tribute at Toyota HQ, but it is actually one of these Shelby-SCCA cars repainted. The original crashed and burned.

Uh, no. You may think that, but at the end of the day it is still just a front engine, rwd touring car with an inline 6. That’s a pretty ubiquitous design. The Jags from this era were almost all that way. The 240, 260, 280z were all like that. The TR6 was a convertible, but it had an X frame like the 2000 as well. There was nothing especially ground breaking developed in this car, it was just a decent quality unit. I mean, they even stole the friggin chassis from Lotus…it may have a cool design, but this is simply another decent Asian vehicle that is severely over hyped and under sold, making it rare. And here we come upon the only thing special about it; rarity. The 300sl was ground breaking in design and concept, won many touring car races. The Miura was the first of a breed of cars that didn’t exist before. The 2000 stole its engineering to make a competitive car off the backs of others’ labor and design.

The Toyota 2000GT is definitely the most beautiful car ever made (IMHO). My introduction to this car was in 1967 in the movie You Only Live Twice at age 12 seen at Shopper's World, Framingham, MA, USA. My very first actual close up look was in 1973 at age 18 when living in Kyoto, Japan parked along Kawaramachi near the intersection of Sanjo-dori. It was a beautiful pristine red example. Although I was in a hurry, I had to stop and just kept walking around it over and over and over and over and over again. I still remember this as though it was yesterday!

The Jaguar E-Type was beautiful. Then this came along eight years later, mimicking the Juguar's lines. Considering only exterior esthetics, I much prefer the E-type.
@VirtualGuth

I can respect that, but feel just the opposite as I prefer the proportions of the 2000GT over the E-Type. Furthermore I actually prefer the aesthetics/proportions of the 240z over the 2000GT and the E-Type both. Sadly, the Z car is seriously let down by its interior among this group. Of course it was the only budget offering of the three. Regardless, they are all beautiful cars that share the same basic visual formula.
@VirtualGuth

@Ali Cuntë I agree with your sentiments. Stating a preference for one thing over another doesn't necessarily downplay the less favored option. We all like what we like, but that doesn't mean that we can't agree they are all wonderful looking cars. I would add that it is not just down to the proportions, but also those things that automotive designers were able to get away with before increasingly restrictive safety regulations were put into place. For me personally, the best looking cars will always predate 1973 (when the 5mph safety bumper regulation was enacted here in the States).
