I did a complete transmission fluid/filter/gasket change and had no issues. I was worried but nothing broke and I even reused the bolts. I’m clearly blessed after watching this video! My 2007 Tundra 5.7 is also from Canada (Ontario) with 460k and was never rust proofed before me owning it.

You guys might want to check out Corrosion-X to both get the bolts to break loose and also to treat the entire underneath so it doesn't rust in the future. They have an HD formula that is useful in harsh environments (it's designed to corrosion-proof US Navy fighter aircraft at sea)

I can sympathise with this so much, I just had the same issue with an mx5 ABS sensor - snapped bolt, snapped the extractor bit, snapped a carbide drill bit trying to drill it out... 5 minute job becomes a 5 day job...

Same here! Snapped extractor bolt in a m6!!! Had to pull the alternator out and wait a week for the machine shop to drill it out..
@mrpasciak92

I learned this the hard way! Next time (hopefully not a next time) get a dremel with a few of the small green grinding stones. This will make getting the extractor out very easy. Next time I will use the green dremel bit to just remove the bolt! Those extractor bits are very hard, bolts are soft.

whenever removing rusted frozen bolt, I like to apply some impact with a hammer and drift onto the head of the bolt. The impact down through the screw will fracture the adhesion and the screw will come out quite often without breaking.

Absolutely, it is part of the blessed trinity of getting stuck stuff unstuck or installed - shock (really unloading the tension/adhesion between the bolt and the hole), heat (the blue wrench, the fire pliers), and seldom used vibration. Okay, there is also penetrating fluids, and slow and steady back and forth. And when it all goes to hell, break out the hot metal glue gun and weld a nut to the bolt stub you just snapped the head off. Or, maybe break off a few drill bits and extractors as foreplay first. Thor's hammer to bang a slot into the mangled head? This is why god made visegrips. This is the part of living in the North East that I don't miss. It builds character though.

Mechanic here from Quebec dealing with this everyday. Gonna give you 2-3 tricks to help you in the future. First off when going with the torche always have a spray bottle full of water. Help not burning rubber stuff, wires, what not and keep the heat localised. Also its easy to stop a small fire and it can be used to quench the bolt, helping further releashing it Second: hammer the socket on. Vibration helps brake the rust off and help the socket bite into the bolt. 3/8 socket is a must for rusted/striped 10mm Third: dont be scared of cutting the head off with the torches. The heat will help relashing whatever is keeping the bolt from turning and you are sure to have something to grab on afterwards. If the bolt goes through in this scenario dont try to back it off, screw it. The thread inside the aluminium are cleans, the ones on top arent it will go by the top like butter Hopes it help anyone with rusted out bolts

In this case you can try to weld a nut or the “bolt” let it cool down and try to unscrew not with impact gun 😃 if it’s snap do it again. And with welding you heated it too. I’ve been using this method on a lot of snapped or rusty bolts and even on a head bolt and it works good every time. Sometimes it’s very frustrating and slow ,but it’s pretty straightforward. Good luck if you have that problem in future( I hope you not) but you can try this method.

Had that same style oil plug on my front dif fill on my 4 runner strip out. I always weld nuts onto stripped, broken, and rounded off fasteners. When that fill plug stripped that's what you needed . On the transmission pan bolts just dropping a nut over the end of the bolt and filling the nut with weld. Wait til it's not glowing red then back it out.

@senglebe

I think you could easily get those remaining studs out with stud extractors. It comes out much easier than you’d think. A little PB blaster. Also using an impact I’ve found yields much better results. The impact hammers tends to knock past the rust a lot better than using a ratchet. My steps are usually impact first, weld nuts on, and then stud extractor.
@Joseph-C
@Joseph-C 2 года назад
First step should always be soak in penetrating oil. After bolts have soaked, overnight with a few applications if it's this bad, then IMPACT ONLY. Using the slow gradual torque of a hand wrench will twist off the end of the bolts every single time. If impact gun cannot reach a bolt then at least hammer on the surface of the head to shock the threads loose.
@senglebe

I just sold my 2010 Tudra, regular Cab, 6 1/2’ box. 370,000 Km’s. A great truck. Upgraded to a 2021, the 5.7 was just too good to make the change to the new V6 Twin Turbo. Guys clean up the the underside of that truck every time you change your tires. My 2010 looked new compared to yours. Clean, wipe down, and touch up the paint! I’m sure my snow road conditions are no better than yours, being just north of Montreal. Keep up the good work!

I grew up in California and worked on cars for over 30 years. I typically did not have to deal with rust the way you guys do. But the torch, cutoff tool, saws all, penetrating oil became my friend. I'd usually get as much penetration oil on the rusted areas, & let it soak over night or even a few days if possible. It was usually the magic along with the torch that worked. If you move to California your hourly rate has to be pretty high, in order to survive. But that's what you have to do, plus work every angle to maximize profits or you will go out of business. The weather is nice, traffic is horrible. (I moved to North West Arkansas for a better quality of life.)

Great video all together though. **Everyone in salted road states be aware** those pan bolts will be rusted, and have high chance of breaking off in the transmission housing. They'll need to be extracted, or drilled out .. possibly retaped. Start with a center punch marking in dead center of bolt. Then drill with smallest bit, gradually working your way up. 3/16 usually will push the bolt out. Use lots of heat if you have enough bolt to grab with vise grips. Cover internals with aluminum foil, wrap tight except for the bolt you're working on. You can also weld a nut on. Use pb blaster on the pan bolts days prior. You can massage in with a qtip.

Every Toyota tech I've spoken to says if you change your transmission fluid with full synthetic fluid every 60k you never need to change the filter - even if it's a heavy work truck. One told me he saw a 400k mi Tundra produce farm truck that followed that rule. Tranny switched on a dime and never had a filter change, just the absolute best quality fluid ON TIME each time. It's more expensive but worth it for the longetivity.

good job on the repair. One suggestion, instead of installing bolts, I would install 6mm x 1.0 pitch studs, thread lock them in place and use locking flange nuts. I use Amsoil's heavy duty metal protectant. Dries to the touch, doesn't attract dirt, and stays on unless you go after it with acetone.

I've got a 2009 Tundra CrewMax, same colour as yours. Just coming up on 200,000 kms and virtually no rust, thanks to it being a western Canada (BC) truck. I think the only thing that kills Toyotas is rust.

They don't salt the roads in Western Canada?
@reallyrandomrides1296
@reallyrandomrides1296 2 года назад
@@dalephillips8250 For the most part, no. They either use a non-corrosive liquid brine made from beet juice (in some areas with harsher winters, they might use salt). Sand is also commonly used, which makes for dusty roads in the spring that need to be cleaned up. This is how it is in much of BC, and I believe Alberta and Saskatchewan too. From Manitoba, eastwards, salt is used quite a lot. The holy grail of nice, used cars is Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. Short, mild winters with little snow. And it's overcast much of the time, so less chance of sun damage.

@@dalephillips8250 No prob! And I should mention that although sand on the roads is good for preventing rust, and giving traction on slick surfaces, inevitably there are small rocks in it, so cracked windshields are more common out west.

I rub some fluid film on the bolts on the oil pan/plugs/etc from a bucket. Sometimes I spray it, but it's easier to use a rag and get a thick application on the engine parts while avoiding belts and exhaust manifolds. 10mm bolts are just going to rust away, it's a pain and being between steel and alu makes it even worse often from galvanic corrosion, vibratight, or some type of additional sacrificial coating helps but needs to be redone every few years as the coating on the steel bolts weakens and wears off.

For anyone else facing the rusty bolts. I used a small cutting disc to cut off the tops of the rusty bolts first, then sprayed. None of the bolts that were cut broke on me. Two others did, where the tips weren't exposed. I tried heat on those, but no luck. Carefully drilled and tapped those out, was really no big deal, just drill centered, straight, and not too deep. I started with maybe a1/8" bit.

A bunch of tips on here already, just thought I’d throw my hat in the ring, when drilling the bolts that snapped, get some reverse drill bits, I swear half the time, the bolts come loose during the drill out process.

I just keep anything I care about out of the salt. In fact, yesterday I washed the truck anticipating snow today. But last night, buddy said, stop by for a bit. There wasn't any snow yet, but the county already spread sand mixed with salt and the pavement started to condensate. So this morning, I ran the truck through the wash again, then hosed out the wheel wells/running boards when I got home. It is now in the heated garage salt free and will sit there until the roads dry up. In the meantime, I'll drive our "disposable" vehicles if I need to go out.

Human error - no! It was pure rust induced by use of salt during the winter. He did exactly the correct thing. It seems that auto manufacturers couldn't care less, afterall car owners have to keep coming back for new a car/truck, repairs, etc. They have created a system that feeds itself.
