Lovely soap, Martin De Candre, i regular use his unscented soap in a 200g glass jar 😊

Indeed it is. My little 30g jar has lasted ages - the 200 must nearly last forever.

I am a big fan of the Dorco Prime blades. A great many will say that it is too mild, and even tuggy. In my experience, it is slightly tuggy for a few strokes, but not in an uncomfortable way. Great shave, Mark. Wishing you and your mum a warm weekend.

I had no problems with this razor, at all. Dorco Prime always seem pretty good to me. More so than their other blades. Thanks for your good wishes, Lee. All the best to your family.

great shave my friend and a cracking little razor . probably could load a bit less on the brush and not get so much soap spilling over . but i think that’s all the fun of it 👌

Of course, you are right but it was pretty good. There was a lot of lather. I like my new mug!😀

Not sure what the proper use would be now, but I think the original intent for a mug/scuttle like this would have to be to make hot water portable since it dates to a time before most people had indoor plumbing. Probably heat the water on the stove, transfer to scuttle, and then off to the mirror/vanity if you had one.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 8 месяцев назад
Yes, I think you may have it, right and 'making hot water portable' - is brilliantly stated, as that is exactly what it does. Thank you very much for your input.

I think i prefer the use shown by your first video . The slipperiness of the mug would be an issue for me and i like to use different soaps during the week and wouldn't want to be cleaning it out but would like that warm lather feel achieved by placing the brush on the mug platform ... good videos , thanks.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 8 месяцев назад
It was certainly less messy and just last night, using the traditional way,I nearly dropped the mug! Slippy handle syndrome! 😃 Cheers Peter.

That's the method I employed every day in the late 60's and 70's; I used to l soap load the brush then face lather, not bowl lather, that way the mug didn't become slippery. Shaving to me then was a necessity and not a hobby, therefore only one puck of soap was used until its end. I didn't have the variety and availability of soaps we use today. After use I dried the mug and razor and stored it in the spout end of the mug to dry. Periodically I used to bleach inside of the mug and sterilize my brush and razor in boiling water, minimize any problems, I still have my mug, but rarely use it now, sadly it's become an ornament. Great content Mark as usual, enjoy a safe weekend

I feel it worked quite well, although perhaps I need a smaller knot in my brush. I tried a smaller synthetic brush but it didn't work quite as well as the badger knot. You make a good point, Roy - there just weren't anywhere near the range of products we have today. I don't think anyone had lots of soap then! I'm glad you enjoyed my experimentation with the mug. I have enjoyed it. Take care.
@michaelshachar7480

Mark I believe you are mostly spot on. I have a smaller vintage scuttle. On the bottom it says UNION SHAVING MUG PATENTED SEPT. 20 1870 The lathering bowl is 3" wide 1.5" deep. The 3 drainage holes are placed .5" from the bottom at the front of the cup above the soap line. This allows the excess water to drain into the soaking compartment. Placing the drainage holes in the bottom of the cup covered by soap defeats the purpose. My only suggestion is to use an appropriate size brush for the scuttle size. For this scuttle my favorite is an 18mm badger. It is efficient and economical, as well as avoiding soap overflow.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 8 месяцев назад
Hi Michael. You vintage scuttle must be one of the first that appeared and I have seen a mug with the holes above the soap line, which makes sense! It was the position of the holes, on my mug that threw me. I could do with a brush that has a smaller knot - my Capt. Fawcett brush is my smallest and just a touch to large. Thank you for your help and support while I figured this out. All the best 😀

I've always wondered how to use these vintage mugs. I thought maybe the top bit was to rest the loaded brush and the soap was in another bowl.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 8 месяцев назад
I kind of did that on my first video Doug, to be honest they both worked very well. I like my mug! It's been a bit of a hit. I hope you are keeping well, mate.

Hi Mark, new subscriber here! Really enjoyed your video, I don't have any shaving mugs/skuttles in my den but I have quite a few soap pucks so think I might get one to try it out. I also have Green Irish Tweed, great fragrance and a lovely end to the shave!

Hello and thank you for the sub! 😀 Green Irish Tweed is indeed lovely - I must get a shaving soap that is a dupe of the scent! I'd like to get Eau Savage as well! Fabulous. All the best.

Culmack are still producing, or having others do it for them, soap. Their pucks are available at Connaught. Pucks are under 4 quid, while a puck in a bowl is just over 5 quid. 19mm boar brushes are 4.80.

You know that Culmack razor I mentioned - it was Clemak. Oops! I had a look at Connaught Shaving - horrible looking Culmack brush; the soap is a s cheap as chips!

Interesting discussion on how the traditional mug/scuttle maybe used, it seems that it can be used either way, I favor using it as a brush warmer scuttle as it's quite messy the other way. If we can find the original Patent submission it may say how it was intended to be used. I remember PAA has a modern scuttle for keeping the lathered brush warm. 🤟😎🤟
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 8 месяцев назад
It is a bit messy - a smaller brush is probably the best option. It has been fun! I tried a plastic PAA scuttle, ages ago and found the shape of the bowl difficult. I shall have to try another scuttle though! Take care mate 👍
@unclelshaves
@unclelshaves 8 месяцев назад
@@FriendshipShaving PAA have a small scuttle, designed for just keeping the lathered brush warm. I agree about normal modern scuttle shapes, would be good to have one with a flat bottom.

Nice shave Mark! I enjoyed see you use the old shave mug/scuttle. Either way you use it works! I wonder if there any old pictures or drawings of a guy useing one or with him shaving with one in the background 🤔 Have a good rest of your Sunday! Steve

I looked at the old b&w movies, as I thought that around 1901 there surely would be. I found they were using a more American style mug, like one you might have tea in, rather than this style. Old photo's might be a way to go. Cheers Steve.

I guess Mark in Edwardian times there wasn’t such a thing as collecting shaving soaps. Guys just bought one soap, used in your mug until it was finished. I think your previous method was valid though! Nice warm lather. Great shave

Hi Mark- Great shave and further discussion of traditional shaving mugs; thank you! And just to clarify, Mark, I think there are many of us who could, indeed, see you as a Victorian gentleman!! Have a great, restful weekend and best regards, as always, my friend!

Hey, cheeky 😀 I have enjoyed discovering how to use this old mug. It has been fun and I'm glad both videos were appreciated. Looking at some of the shaving scenes from the silent movies, Americans seemed to favour a more normal looking shaving mug. I've seen a milk glass mug with a viking's face on the outside that looks very interesting. This one was cracked but I shall be on the lookout. Cheers Mike. Take care.
