There was also Frank Sinatra and how he helped Sammy Davis because there were many hotels that would not allow Sammy Davis Junior to stay there because he was black in fact many of them didn't even want him eating in their public restaurants. Sinatra was relentless and tireless in his demand that every entertainer was treated equally he is insistence on fair treatment mirrored his on stage acceptance of Sammy Davis Junior. Sinatra told Ebony magazine in 1958 "a friend to me has no race, no class and belongs to no minority. My friendships are formed out of affection, mutual respect, and a feeling of having something in common. These are eternal values that cannot be classified ". So without Frank Sinatra it might've been much longer before black entertainers like Sammy Davis might have been able to eat perform and stay at many of the places in Vegas.
And don’t forget, Sammy had a wife who was white and a lot of people didn’t like that. He had many threats made on his life because of it. There was at times many places that would not allow him and his wife to be seen together . The KKK made threats on him as well.
Without White racism, there would be no need for Frank to do anything for Sammy. So the SHAME of Raciality falls in White people, no exception, in the ab initio.
@@mrwodabe That's right because Sammy was Extremely Talented! He was in the pack because he deserved to be there equally, not because anyone needed to help him.
Frank, All The Way. Also, the other big male singing stars of the 50's that shouldn't be left off the list and were arguably more popular than Bing Crosby and Frankie Lane were Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole and Johnny Mathis.
Frank was the best singer of them all in my opinion, just listen to his Capitol and Reprise recordings. But they were all of course superb singers and entertainers. I got to see Frank live in Stockholm, Sweden in 1990 and I will always remember that concert for sure. It´s hard to describe how he held us all in his hand and dominated the concert hall completely. Talk about charisma, voice and talent even at 74 (he turned 75 later that year)! And I might add Frank JR was the conductor and leader of the orchestra.
Great Memories! Sammy Davis Jr. was 'Michael Jackson' even before Michael was born...any one wanna bet that Michael got the 'moonwalk' from Sammy? Sammy was the best of the best...50 years before his time, he is an American Hero...kind of like Jesse Owens in sports.
@Mike Flair Doubtful. Michael was too young to have seen much - if any - of Sammy's performances. Plus, remember that Michael didn't get to have a childhood, as he was forced to rehearse practically every waking hour of the day. Sammy was great, and so funny. I miss seeing those guys. But Michael - in my opinion - was a musical/dancing genius. I'm not sure we'll ever see a natural talent like that again in our lifetimes. A tragic, regrettable loss.
My father hardly drank and he lived to 76 years old. Dean beat my father by roughly two years. If Dean was a hard drinker, his liver would have given out a long time ago.
Lol...you're an idiot. He never and could not sing country OR rock n roll .." best singer" 🤣😂😃😄...good , even very good ...but no where near the best....lol...yes it's confirmed you are a moron.
@@panteraxenos4789You're so immature that you can't give your opinion without insulting people. STFU and look in the mirror to find the real idiot/moron.
They all had talent they all smoked and they all cheated on their wives. They were all talented. I liked Sammy and Dean the best. I have some of their movies too. I think Dean Martin was best looking though. Loved watching Dean Martin and the Gold Diggers show too.I went to a USO show at Angel Stadium in Anaheim to watch the Gold Digger and Dean Martin, Danny Thomas, and a number of other famous people in 1968. I miss those old days.
I wish I could have been able to see the Rat Pack during their heyday in Las Vegas. It must have been a wonderful experience to have seen them perform then.
I think Frank was the best singer, Dean Martin the best actor, Sammy Davis the best all-around performer. Frank helped Sammy in Vegas break the color barrier by convincing the casino owners that the only color they needed to focus on was GREEN, and Sammy would help that along. Frank made sure Sammy never had to enter the casinos through the back entrance as well, threatening to never perform there unless they treated Sammy with all due respect. Frank was the most imitated singer. Look at two guys who copped Sinatra's style. Harry Connick Jr. and Michael Buble' and made a fortune out of it.
Sammy was my favorite, i wish i was born in the 1940's so i could have been a teenager in the 50's & gone to Vegas in the 60's. Also club 54 in the 70's. 😂
Sammy Davis was married to white Swedish actress May Britt from 1960 to 1968). They had several children together. Which all happened before the claim being made here of him being 'suicidal' about an affair with white actress Kim Novak. In fact, I call a big time 'fact check' on your version of these particular events. Your piece here however does mention that Sammy later did marry a Black woman, which is true (his widow, show dancer 'Altovise'), but, that also happened much later after his initial interracial marriage to May Britt. I seriously doubt if Sammy Davis, Jr back in his heyday had any issues keeping the intimate company of many women, women of various types, and races. 😎
He married Loray White on January 10, 1958. She was 23 and had a six year old child. They never lived together and they divorced April 23, 1959. He paid her 10 thousand and a new Cadillac, when the marriage was annulled. The mob kidnapped him and told him marry a black woman or we remove the other eye or we break your leg. Miss White was his first wife out of fear for his life. Altovise was his third wife.
Both were great singers. Frank Sinatra was more sociable than Bing Crosby. The Rat Pack is so missed, they has style, glamour and the power to bring people together in Las Vegas. Also Frank Sinatra also made Palm Springs a destination. Perhaps Frank Sinatra is the greatest entertainer along with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. In the 20th Century. Their legacy is set and no one hasn’t been closed to what they’ve achieved. Thanks Rat Pack RIH. Also to Peter Lawford for his contribution RIH, Joey Bishop RIH
Yeah, that Lame Lawford wore a Cashmere Turtleneck, instead of the Military Uniform that all of the rest of the real men were wearing in a War movie, of all things. When I saw that, that is when I had NO RESPECT FOR THE GUY !!! THAT DID IT FOR ME !
Love Las Vegas !!! It's not my favourite US city (Deadwood!) But it's really interesting as are all US cities....each one has it's own unique history . 🇦🇺💙🇺🇸
@@katherinegray5086 come to Ireland the post office in Dublin is over 300 years old. The towns and cities like Tara,Cork, limerick are wonderful. I’ve traveled all around the world but the greens you get from the hills, mountains and fields are mind blowing. You’ve not seen green until you’ve been 2 the emerald isles 🇮🇪❤️
I will always feel bad about Peter Lawford being ousted from the Rat Pack over the misunderstanding regarding where President Kennedy was going to stay. I really felt sorry for him about that and having to deal with his good friend Marilyn Monroe's tragic death.
Love 'em Both, but I feel that Frank had a better voice overall. Bing's voice was Great as well, just not as strong I guess. Also don't think Bing had the range that Frank did.
I preferred the sound of Frank over Bing, but my mom loved Bing. I think its the type of music that you prefer that makes the difference. I loved Sammy Davis Jr more than all the others shown. I saw Carson in this video singing., I never knew he could sing!!! I wonder why he didn't do more of it.
@@escherking643 I came across them late one night around like 3am, easy back in the early 2000s, and never laughed so hard! Got a bunch of them. Not all. Thankfully they're all on RU-vid. :)
I gave you a like this time. But with all due respect I cannot subscribe because of a monumental error made that shouldn't have been made. Dude! It's LIZA Minnelli not Lisa! Whoever wrote the copy was negligent and sloppy; or perhaps it was the narrator who made this glaring mistake. Even at that, someone should have proofed the video before it was launched to assure accuracy. This isn't the first video you've done where there was a discrepancy of the facts. I saw one about a week ago in which you were talking about a particular star and you showed the picture of someone completely different. I don't remember who it was. This is the second time I've noticed the error. My advice to you is get your act together before you put it on the RU-vid Highway.
Great musicians, but their promoted reputation as 'Hell Raiser's', was a bit pathetic. Old guy's trying to act like 'Cool' teenager's, marrying and dating young women, the age of their daughter's.
The racism that Sammy Davis Jr had to endure was so cruel. Its a damn joke. Black people deserve to be treated equally like everyone else. And Frank Sinatra for me is the best singer out of him and Bing even though Bing was a very talented man.
At the 5:52 mark, you say in 1951 Sinatra's fans were slipping away and that " .... Bing Crosby and Frankie Laine came to prominence." Now you can say that about the great Frankie Laine, but Bing was already and had been for decades the Superstar of singers. You really need to get your facts straight or use the correct words in these stories you tell. Don't worry, you're not the only site that does this. I mean, come on, Bing wan an institution.
