The Tragic and Trival, yet Triumphant and True Tale of Phyllis Hyman (2/3)

It's the mid-80s and Phyllis is Living All Alone, and without a record label or any distribution. R&B legend Kenny Gamble offered and sign her a contract at Philadelphia International Records. What wouldn't she do for love? And so after recording and releasing a very personal album, our Old Friend was here, and she was welcomed back into our lives again. Stay tuned for the final part C.

Phyllis was extremely sensitive, uncompromising, haltingly beautiful, and yet a tortured artist. Being the tall, vivacious creature that she was, I am certain that she was misunderstood, and under compensated for her gifts. As someone who adored her talents, beauty, and sophistication. I get the sense that too many issues clouded her judgement, and impaired her success. Whatever got under her skin, her lost loves disappointments, hurts, she sang about them, and never truly released them.

Well said, Michael. Perhaps she was simply TOO good, TOO honest, TOO talented, TOO loyal to her art, simply TOO BEAUTIFUL for this filthy, crappy, backstabbing business. Rest in Paradise, Beautiful Angel Phyllis.

Very good observation. And we know artist who do the same but like you pointed out they work through there's to heal. But I wonder if her disorder just wouldn't allow HER for whatever reason. I say this because everyone that spoke about talked about how matter of fact she was about doing it. It's so sad.

Daniel Robinson It's so disheartening when people around you don't understand depression at all..They expect you just to snap out of it, I wish it was that easy, but it's not..I've suffered from depression my entire life I know this now, and it's getting worse the older I get..God please help me..My daughter doesn't understand my depression, but my son does because he has it too..He can take one look at me and tell when I'm suffering real bad..

Phyllis Hyman and Angela Bofill my very favorite of all female vocalist. And Phyllis's whistling one of the most ethereal sounds I have heard. It 💔 broke my heart, to hear she had taken her own life. And so very little spoken on it. Her passing was just pasted over like she was noone. That is the furtherist thing from the truth. All the future concerts gone. The music community lost a truly gifted human being with her loss. Our loss Rest in Peace lovely angel. You are missed. Deeply missed.

Even though I was a baby when she died in 1995 and I started to listen to her music at age of 14 in 2009 14 years after she passed. If you need love, real love let God minister His love. I did not feel suicidal, but was very alone in this world, weary worn and sad. But I had a private talk with the God who cares. He said come unto me all ye that are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me (Matthew 11 28-30). So I did and then accepted the finished work of Jesus and told Him to come in my life and help me. He did, showed me His Word and the walked with me through John chapter 15, 16, and 17. After that I know a love greater than mom, dad or any man. I love God, I love me and that was over 30 years ago that we have walked together. He was with thru the good and bad, hard times, all of it. He’s Good.

Depression is very real and if you don't get the help you need and the right medication, the outcome can be suicide. The answer is a relationship with our Father who is in HEAVEN and other believers. I know how bad it can get, I was once young and the oldest of ten siblings. Got married @ an early age, lived with an abusive husband for 15 years and had 6 children of my own and bad relationships, but in the end Jesus was the answer to all of my problems. Now I live alone, have grandchildren and greatgrand children and God sustains me through it all. "Gifted people" often struggle with a dark side. That girl was a bad sister.

Time does change all things but her time create more emptiness and pain and she needed out. Maybe God is showing her how life could have been experience differently..

Beyonce can't SING and will NEVER sing like Phyllis!! Are you kidding me?? Back then, Phyllis had no PROPER Management to get her to the top. She DID NOT sign her soul over to the Devil (Clive Davis)...THAT'S WHY!!

Phyllis rushes a little in some of her live performances ! She could have slowed down a tad bit and her moves would have been even more powerful ! She my all time favorite though

Dionne L my dear sister and sisters there are two many that hurt from what they feel that they love, and they sometimes miss the ones that do really love them. The love that most are looking for is right there inside of them, know that and you will know the man that has that same love for you. Just saying mean no harm.
