It's easy to focus on the physical and psychological trials Winston Smith went through in the Ministry of Love, but perhaps the greatest tragedy of Winston's journey was his loss of humanity under the dominion and correction of the Party.

sadly, just at the moment when Winston seems closest to happy and most human is when he and Julia are arrested

It is tragic. If I didn't know better I suspect it was designed that way too, just to have the greatest effect in crushing Winston's resolve and hope.

Your thought makes me wonder if "raw sex" was really a problem? As you said "happiness" ~then perhaps the transcendence into "passionate emotional Love" created the trigger to arrest them? Stifling love was their goal. I'm not remembering Julia's quote on Love at the moment. 🎉☮️

@egoborder3203 What makes yoy say that? In the book, after being tortured he utters juila's name and has an hallunication of her then says he hates big brother when o'brein asks his feelings. But he actually feels happy about himself. The book clearly says he starts to develope pride in his own body when he is allowed to recover, putting weight on and doing laps in his cell.given fresh dentures, new clothes and given a bath everyday, hot food coffee and cigerettes and he says how perfect life is without the beating.

The old prole is a clever bit because he's clearly a survivor. He doesn't acknowledge the time before the revolution and feigns addlement to appear nonthreatening. He must've known the elderly and their knowledge were a threat

I think that’s a very optimistic reading of his answer. Even though we are talking fiction I would love to believe you are right but suspect that you are wrong. Almost sure you are wrong, but it would be very cool and give a hopeful twist to the over-all story. At the end of the day I think he was just honest and limited and had no notion of what Winston was talking about.
@LathropLdST
@LathropLdST 2 месяца назад
No they were not. They could talk to themselves before they were quietly culled. Younger proles were too engrossed with novels and lottery to care to ask for stories from their elders. Their own less keen/ involved brains did the rest. I always read it as an old man happy to be talked to and babbling, tripping over the wave of hazy memories in his eagerness to be heard.

So write it all down as a "novel" and hand it to your grandson... a novel that gets passed around hand to hand... mouth to mouth; spreading ideas and beliefs in something bigger than the physical world and a truth bigger than the state... We've never experienced anything like that, have we... That's how faith survives..

40k is so over the top with its brutality that it becomes unbelievable, a joke and satire even when trying to be serious. 1984 is so personal and down to earth, focusing on just one man, that it just hits harder

"Room 101" 😮 I do wonder how Inner Party interrogation yields "a deepest fear": I do realize that Winston reveals this "childhood Rat story" after hurling the paperweight at a rat, in view of the telescreen (thus 'history' and 'observation'). But is this how every other victim's worst fear was unveiled before moving to "Room 101" ?
@nineteen-eighty-four-lore
@nineteen-eighty-four-lore 2 месяца назад
Possibly another way is through laborious and horrid interrogation and torture. After a time, a person will probably divulge pretty much everything when asked under pressure and doubly so under the influence of certain drugs.

I read this section the other day. Winston didn't instinctively know that his mother and sister had been sacrificed for him, but he believed that he had inadvertently murdered his mother by stealing his sister's chocolate rations. He admits to himself that he didn't actually know what happened to his mother and sister and perhaps they ended up in some kind of labor camp or perhaps they were purged by the Party.

Just thinking of the great actors who’ve portrayed Winston Smith over the decades. I know there are more, but off the top of my head: Peter Cushing, Edmond O’Brien (yes, a coincidence there on his name), Patrick Troughton, John Hurt, the list goes on.

I like to view the rhyme with this in mind. As he pushes further he kearns more about the past. The geography as well as the old song itself. There is a second side though in that the deeper he goes th kess heed he has for danger even as it increaes around him. Encouraged gently along by Charrington of course. This brings him to realise that no matter what his humanity is determined only by himself. Until he visits room 101

@@doggoin_times9094 There's a very funny Mitchell & Webb sketch about two state functionaries working in Room 102 and complaining about the noise from next door. They observe how people have got wise to Room 101 containing their deepest fears and now drop hints prior to arrest that they fear spectacular and enjoyable things.
@donalfoley2412

I can say now that I will cling to my humanity, but how well would that last in room 101? We should all cultivate the virtues of course, but…. The old christian martyrs who founded our christian/post-christian society, a society that believes in human rights, faced horrible execution, but those who face totalitarian persecution today (and it is ongoing and many of them are christians) face refined psychological methods of torture. How would you or I last under those conditions? I am not optimistic about myself, though I know some very strong people would not break down before dying. At least we can do our best to stop our own countries from falling into that trap and maybe even help people in those countries that have become totalitarian. Maybe we could stop supporting totalitarian states with our trade. If we don’t even make an effort we may live comfortably but lose our souls in the end (whether you think of souls literally or metaphorically).

@nineteen-eighty-four-lore
@nineteen-eighty-four-lore 2 месяца назад
Based on history, we can be certain that no state of any kind lasts indefinately. Even long-lived ones like arguably the Roman 'state' only lasted in different forms for a few centuries or much longer, depending on your view. The Republic was different from the Principate, etc. No state or political set-up (whatever we want to label it) lasts forever, even with 'good' intentions to make it last. Inevitably all of these powers will eventually collapse or change into something else.

[Your closing question] ~ how any of us *might* retain our humanity, after torture by an Agency charged with reeducation of deviants, is maximally subjective. I have +/- 16 fractured bones; many people have never broken one. How would I react to a very tortuous fracture designed to "help me" compared to "Joe" who's never experienced such horrid pain? Would "O'Brien" have to crack five of my bones, to yield the same state of Joe, who's freaking out because he's never experienced that pain? I ❤️ love ❤ this aspect. Who has paid attention to the words of Sirhan Sirhan, who claims his "shooting of Robert Kennedy" happened and he doesnt deny doing it, but claims he had no direct memory of acting through those horrid minutes? He could be a student of "Manchurian Candidate" as a covering act to seek absolution, or(?) ~ he could be living proof of a "Dark Agency" and Thought Control.
