When you hear stories about the civil rights movement in the '50s and '60s, it mainly revolves around figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, and Medgar and Myrlie Evers. But did you ever hear about Fannie Lou Hammer?
She wasn’t just a civil rights activist. Hammer was a voting and women’s rights activist as well as a community organizer. She was the founder of the Freedom Democratic Party and was the co-founder of the National Women’s Political Caucus.
But her path to register and help thousands of African-Americans in Mississippi to become registered voters was met with threats, extortion, and assaults. She faced a lot of tragedy and setbacks in her quest to gain equality and freedom during the civil rights movement. Let's take a look.

My aunt who was a teacher at the time saw me doing a report on MLK and asked who else are you learning about and I named the usual black history top ten and she shook her head. From that day forward my aunt began teaching me and giving me books about other black history GIANTS who get overlooked!! To this day I thank her for that!! Rest in Power to Mrs. Hamer!! @Pulsonar
@Pulsonar Месяц назад
@@vergespierre4271 You’re right, it was a few years ago when I made that comment. I stopped using the term ‘African American’ when referring to black American citizens. In fact, I simply call them American, and only bring skin colour or ethnicity into it if the topic concerns race. When I thought about it, the name ‘African American’ isn’t correct. To me it sounds as if they don’t belong and only just arrived in America as recent immigrants of their own free will. Then why don’t we refer to white Americans as European Americans? It sounds just as ridiculous from the same perspective. Most black Americans have no connection with Africa whatsoever other than some long lost lineage at least 6-7 generations ago when slavery was in place before the US civil war. The ones that do are true recent immigrants with US citizenship and not even they are called African American, but instead Nigerian-American, Ghanaian Americans, or from whichever country they originated from within the continent of Africa.

Even after being forewarned that we would be dismantled as a nation and scattered to the 4 corners of the earth, if we didn't do them that we would receive such treatment (Deutoronomy 28). It's insanity that our people are still relying upon a government to make things better for them that was never intended for them in the 1st place. Come back to Your True Heritage!!

I don't know how Caucasians, who have familial roots in America that stretch for several hundred years of generations, feel so comfortable with their history. So comfortable as to make their history a standard in our educational system's curriculum like it's not barbarism while simultaneously muting other experiences who bring to light their depravity. So comfortable as to have no real remorse nor accountability to work to right those wrongs because today's descendants are still benefiting from those atrocities and don't want to give up their privilege for equity. I'd be deeply ashamed. This woman was ALIVE within the last 50 years but not LIVING because she continuously had to fight to be treated like a human, too recent for comfort and Black people are STILL dealing with this. I never knew her story in depth but I'm SO HAPPY AND GRATEFUL I know now. She's just another Black woman I'm going to use to model my life after on how to Survive and Better America. Are you ashamed of everything that's ever been done by anyone who has skin like yours? Many people are mixed race without knowing it. Should they be ashamed of everything that's been done by both white and black forebears? I only have the chance to do what's right in my lifetime. I will try and I will acknowledge if I don't do enough. I saw Fannie Lou portrayed in a film about Pres. Mrs. Fannie, thank you for all that you did to bring about positive change for black people. Your suffering will not be in vain. Many, many white people are going to suffer, because of how they treated black people. God was punishing us for what we did. Dueteronomy 28 tells us the curses we are under because of our disobedience to the Most High. @@dekaibrahim6749 unfortunately it is true dear. Those enslaved thru the TAST were descendants of the lost 12 tribes of Israel and yes they were cursed due to disobedience. How in the hell fo they expect us to pledge allegiance to a country that treats us this way???😡 This Queen was robbed of the right to bear children amongst MANY other injustices!!!
