During the early hours of Tuesday, September 4th 1860, the small village of Helmshore - situated within the Rossendale Valley in the North West of England was rocked by a serious tragedy that claimed the lives of 11 innocent victims as well as seriously injuring onwards of 77 people.
After spending the previous day enjoying a brass band contest that had taken place in Manchester with an estimated 20,000 people in attendance, over 2,500 people boarded three trains to begin their journey home to the surrounding towns of Helmshore. Many where travelling to Accrington, Blackburn and Colne and despite the crammed conditions they travelled in - roughly 50 to 60 persons per carriage, most where in a jovel mood and enjoying the scenery, albeit only briefly lit by the moon in an otherwise cloudless evening sky.
Unbeknownst to many passengers, tragedy would soon befall them in a truly shocking manner.

Another good video going back many years. 11 people killed so sad indeed. Thanks for going back in history again, and sharing 👍👍

One of my favourite playing out making dens spot. Early 80s. Lived in Helmshore for most of my life. And never knew about this story. So interesting.

It's a pity access to where the carriages collided is sort of blocked off. You can get there, but access can be harder during the summer months due to overgrowth. Also, the owner of the land, from all accounts, doesn't like people up there, but to be honest, I've been twice and never seen anyone. It's pretty secluded.

Brilliant!! I love ravenshore. A friend who lived close by to the crash site had heavy hammering on her door in early hours of one morning no one was there and a neighbour reported the same in the same night she believes it to be residual energy from the crash which I think is quite possible x

I'm a big believer in residual hauntings. People laugh at the idea but all energy has to go somewhere. And that energy could well be 'spirit' that can or still does the same things in death that they once did in their lifetime. It might make for a good video, visiting the area and doing some experiments perhaps.

@@DaysofHorror I bet you could get some good evidence from that area but I’d definitely watch with or without any catches

The locals don't know it now as Ravenshaw or I've never heard it known as that. Fascinating video well done

I honestly think not many people have heard of it who live locally. Thats the reason for us pushing to try and get a memorial plaque made and erected. If we can reach our goal, we have a company ready to get the plaque made. We are also revisiting this story as I type this, with a book to accompany a video.

I thoroughly enjoyed this Chris, what a fascinating town you live in. Great depth of History. I so look forward to seeing your videos as not having much time to explore historical stories myself I feel involved by watching these. Thanks for sharing.

Hi there! Thanks for watching and commenting. It's been a struggle, but we have begun recording a follow up to this video which has more detail. We are not sure when it will be completed but it should definately be more informative!

I found out the year after doing this video that the stretch of land where the carriages and the train collided is private land and the owner can be a bit of a miserable so and so 🫤 Personally, if i owned it and knew the history, I'd try and keep it clear from overgrowth and allow curious visitors to view it. Okay, the viaduct can be dangerous but that can be blocked off easily I guess.

700m from the statin to the bridge. What the pipe and guides look like is a water lift where the weight of water in the pipe pulls a piston attached to a cable for pulling carts uphill (Possibly stone from out of the old quarries there) Listed to the north of the line at the south end of the viaduct (river side after it's passed the viaduct) is a Mile Post and the golf course there is well over 100yr old

Can you please tell me what that haunting music is that accompanies the opening sequence of this intriguing video. Who is the female vocalist?

Hi Graham, it's called Train Song by a lady called Vashti Bunyan. I love this piece of music.

It's one of our earliest recordings and since then we have uncovered a lot more to this story. There is also loads going on behind the scenes we are yet to tell people. Such as the plaque we have raised funds for which we will be revealing in the next month or so. We have had to wait for warmer weather as the ground has been too hard for us to dig deep enough to install it onto a stake of sorts. We also have a follow up video to this one to explain more in detail as to what happened.
