Here’s my opinion..and it’s just opinion…i myself have never owned a Subaru but I have friends that have…2 WRX 1 STI…the 2 that owned the wrx’s sent them to Subaru shops and started upgrading them. And they always had problems…like one problem after the other. The guy that had the STI left it stock and never messed with it…there is currently over 200k miles and the only thing he has done is normal maintenance like oil changes and the regular wear and tear parts like suspension components and brake stuff…that’s it…. didn’t touch the turbo didn’t tune. It didn’t touch the intercooler. Just left it stock and never had a problem with it. So I think the problem is once people start tuning them and upgrading them. That’s when the problem start.

But when people don’t leave them stock they skimp out on key reliability mods that are ESSENTIAL not just recommended because many owners are cheapskates so they say leave them stock because 1 they are not willing to spend the money and 2 believe everything others say and not look at R&D proven statistics with quality components engineered to work.

Same damn thing as I have said. But again this wasn't a problem with the whole series of engines of the 90s in either version of the 2.2 na or the hot turbo versions that have a ridiculously high strength engines that can be massively abused! The problem is with the generic 2.5 open cell decks with no support or extra oiling for cooling etc

Its starting to be well known in the subaru community, that the issues stem from tight tolerances with the piston rings. They are setup that way from the factory for the most mpg possible. .007, is common on stock setups and that is far too tight for building power. Now, with that being said, you can leave the motor alone, and it will be super reliable, except for in a few rare cases, but the majority of owners with stock sti's have no issues.
@Da0R30
@Da0R30 18 дней назад
Hey, former Subaru owner and love Subarus! A stock one is very dependable and highly reliable. It’s when you start modding Subies that people have problems with them because typically they fail to do supporting mods with the mods that they do and cause problems. Anyways, to help troubleshooting with this I would also recommend getting it retuned. But before that, I would also highly recommended verifying that the upgraded MAP sensor is one that properly works with his Subaru. I know that Subies can be very particular about their MAP sensors and not everyone will operate properly in a Subaru even if made for Subarus. After that is verified I would then retune for speed density. Hopefully after that it’ll run right again. Oh and to answer the O2 Sensor question, Subies run two O2 sensors, one in the headers and another in the down pipe. Typically you’ll disable both and then run a wide band from the down pipe port for attaining your accurate numbers. But yes, Subies run O2 stock pre and post turbo, but for performance tuning we prefer readings from post turbo. Hope y’all forgive it out and I can’t wait for the update video to see what it is that was the issue!

Yeah the EJ20 was one of God's engines. I have multiple with hundreds of thousands of miles that are all original. The EJ18 and EJ22 were also some of the most reliable engines of all time. I have numerous of those all original with hundreds of thousands of miles as well. The EJ25 did have head gasket issues, no doubt. The EJ25 turbo engines can be reliable for sure, but it just depends on owner and use case and mods and all that. The newer FA/FB series in general have been overall quite reliable. The EZ 6 cylinder series are also absolute tanks. It's just a matter of knowledge really.

@@802Garage EJ25 n/a they put faulty head gaskets in from factory which they never admitted. Easy to replace and once fixed they go forever as long as the oil level is checked frequently. I don't own ONE Subaru. I own TEN! Every one of them has the original engine and has never been blown up. That said, they are all EJ18, EJ22, EJ20, or EZ30. Well, except for the one with a Dodge 8.0L V10, but that doesn't count. My first car was an EJ22 that I stopped driving at 245,000 miles due to rust and being beaten up by dirt roads. The second daily was an EJ18 1993 Impreza I got at 96,000 miles and stopped driving somewhere in the mid 200,000s due to rust. My current daily is an EJ18 1993 Impreza which just hit 300,000 miles. All of them still run perfectly, aside from the old dailies sitting for ages. Part of the reason Subaru HAD a reputation for legendary reliability was their 90s cars which were simple and bulletproof. The EJ25 ruined the reputation a lot with head gasket issues. As for the turbo engines in general, they can be reliable, the EJ20 especially, but mods especially cause a lot of the bad rep. Subaru has been getting more reliable again, but obviously they have had missteps. I just wish they were still making the STI and were keeping their quirky nature for all the models. Kinda forgetting their dedicated base. They are still the right car for the job when you live out in the middle of nowhere on dirt roads or have harsh winters. My close family has probably owned 50+ Subarus in my lifetime because we are almost always buying older used models and driving them into the ground. They are very simple to maintain, easy to work on, great in bad conditions, the parts are cheap, and they are largely reliable overall regardless of internet memes. Anyone who tells you a Subaru is hard to work on has never worked on them or has only ever done spark plugs. Give me a Subaru over almost any transverse engine car any day. Even the timing isn't bad. People just like to wine. It takes a few hours and is no worse than any V engine. The parts lookup is better than most companies too. Bottom line, Subaru has and has had its share of issues. There are many reasons people love them despite the reputation varying over the years. The only way to actually get a feel for it is to own one. Preferably one that hasn't been modded poorly or beaten to death. If anyone is going to Wicked Big Meet in June, keep an eye out for me and say hey!

Previous owner of three Subaru Imprezas. None were turbo and were very reliable, but each had refrigerant leaks, and the A/C had to be periodically recharged. Each of the three also had oil seepage at the head gaskets (known issue with the 2.5). My 2009 Impreza after a couple of years of ownership had an issue where it kept blowing a fuse and we did not figure that one out. The weird thing about this fuse is that it was hidden behind the glove box and was not listed in the manuals. A Subaru expert knew about it. That fuse would cause a no start issue.

I have a '19 Outback. I've had it for close to a year now and the only major issue I've had is the head unit delaminating. I was quoted $2k from the dealer to fix and Subaru of America offered to pay for $1k. I went to an aftermarket shop and was able to get all of the factory creature comforts to work for $1200. I did my research before getting the car and expected it to happen eventually but not as soon as it did.

On the bright side its proceeds bought me my current F250 7.3 that also was meticulously maintained by a college automotive teacher and beyond some wear tear items it has been solid. It's cheaper to drive the f250 too, same mpg but diesel is cheaper than premium right now lol.

19:48 if you look at the grimmspeed 3port boost controller, port 3 is disconnected and should have a cap on it if it is not being used with an external waste gate as it will cause the boost controller to act like this, i had one on my 03 wrx wagon and it came off once from the 3-port and it went into limp mode because it was not actuating my BOV, now i see in the clip or about there that the BOV is lined but i cant tell where it is run to or from and im going to have to assume that with the undercarriage footage that i did not SEE an external waste gate so it is probably running the fp green with the internal waste gate, if that is the case then there SHOULD be a vacuum hose going from that 3rd port in the middle to the nipple on the turbo to provide a boost reference to the 3 port boost controller @TheQuestionableGarage

I’ve had similar issues on a lot of cars over the years. If the crank sensor, ignition coil or anything with a fixed magnet and wire winding set in epoxy has an internal crack, it won’t be visible and when cold, these parts will bench test good because they are cooled off enough to touch. When it is heat cycled the internal crack will expand and then it falls on its face. The crank sensor can be bad even though it looks ok, it could have been dropped which made that mark on the edge I saw and it could still be a problem. Just my two cents.

FWIW pre-turbo O2 sensors are becoming much more common. That's what the new Bosch LSU ADV sensor is for. The Subaru wideband O2 sensors were designed for the application or at least well tested for it and are generally quite reliable, at least stock of course. Many aftermarket setups will move it to post turbo. I wouldn't call crank and cam sensor issues more common for Subaru than any other brand. If you Google any brand and crank position sensor you'll find thousands of posts on various models. That said, the crank sensors do die occasionally, as with any brand. I think we've had to replace one or two out of 50 or so high mileage cars. You gotta remember a lot of the forum posts are people who don't really know tossing out ideas or regurgitating information they have read without understanding. My first thought with those symptoms would be a crank or cam sensor as well, but a drive by wire fault could totally make sense. Hopefully an easy tune fix then. You were right the first time, BTW. Acronym is a word made from the starting letters of another word. An abbreviation made from first letters that does not form another word is technically an initialism. An anagram is a word made by rearranging the letters of another word.

I keep Rain-X on my cars & at speed, don't need to use the wipers as I find them to be a distraction... It is important to apply on a very clean window. So I wet the glass & use a fine steel wool to remove all particles from the glass, & when dry, apply the Rain-X evenly, with a disposable paper towel. Then, when set, you will notice a change/ flash... you can then use your squeegee & window wash , twice, to clean the window. & except for low speed, you will not need the wipers :-) Thank you for your videos. & you are right, my sister is on her 3rd Subaru, but I am hoping to change her to a Toyota or Honda for reliability, as she is now on disability, so a smaller RAV-4 from the 2012 or earlier area may be better for her. AWD as she is in the snow, but 4 cylinder for okayish MPG... I do like your videos, very different from many, & you tackle some really tough things, like that EV Pickup... wow! Subaru OEM components are as reliable as any other Japanese manufacturer, as in more so than European or American components. They are manufactured by the same Japanese brands. By components, I'm referring to individual parts like Sensors, Alternators, Starters, Wiring, Water pumps, Power Steering pumps, Coilpacks, Actuators, Timing components, etc. etc. You never see premature from these outside of one or two specific parts over the decades from Subaru. The engine failures are relegated to specific models and instances, as are the transmission failures, same as any other brand. The big difference was how Subaru kept the same engineering for decades with the drivetrains, and in instances those problems persisted for an extended period of time (EJ251/3 headgaskets, EJ255/7 ringlands, FA/FB cam case seals) because its such a small company. Other, larger manufacturers rectified drivetrain issues with redesigns a LOT quicker because they usually had the money to do so. Whats funny is how much other brands with repetitive issues with all sorts of components (BMW, VAG, Mercades, Stelantis, Ford, etc.) get away with being actually unreliable because its just so accepted.

The secret to happy Subaru ownership is to remember that Subaru stopped making cars in 2007. After that date, they made car shaped disappointment. Before that date they made some of the best and all weather cars ever made, equal or better to the Audis and Volvos that cost twice as muchad that in truth were no more reliable. Also, you need to remember that a Subaru is not a drag car, nor a drift car, nor a cruiser. Its a car to drive on slick roads in shitty weather. When you try doubling a Subaru's horsepower, you are working against its strengths. Try spending your money on studded winter tires and a seasons pass at ski resort instead. You will be happy as a clam.

Owned nothing but Suabru's the past 15 years and never had any mechanical problems. Had the odd O2 sensor fail, but never a major mechanical failures and most of my cars have been modified to around 400whp. It all comes down to how you treat them, maintenance and knowing what you're doing. Too many people modify them, drive them without being tuned or don't keep up with maintenance and then blame Subaru.

I bought an old rs wagon 2.5, junk, the frame broke, the engine always had issues, the engines were designed to be turbo charged, the 4 cylinders burn up with out the turbo return i think, but yeah number 4 burns up without a turbo air coming in to cool the # 4 cylinder, new plugs and wires every month

Ah yes, was wondering if that was an STI or not. That should have come stock with a 6 speed, and that transmission is so highly valued that the WRX's of that generation will swap it in because Subaru paired a really bad transmission with the newer FA20 while they kept the EJ with a transmission that will work with 700-800 HP being pushed through it without needing to modify the transmission. Yes, Subaru owner is being nitpicky.... And yes, we're probably all enthusiastic masochists XD

I bought a 2008 Subaru Legacy I in 2009. It was absolutely the best car we ever owned. We did spend $1600 on head gaskets before it became an issue, then we spent $1800 on the timing belt before it became an issue. Then I drove it up to 200k miles and the bottom end let go right after I spent 4k on a timing belt repair that bent valves.

I drove a 1999 Subaru Legacy wagon for 14 years (until the rust killed it), and I’ve been driving a Honda Accord (coupe) for the past 2 years. I have had more problems with the Accord in 2 years than I had in 14 of the Legacy! Head gaskets? Subaru: 0 replaced, Honda: on its 3rd. Timing set? Subaru: 3 timing belts total (276,000 miles) broke 1 belt, no valve damage. Honda: on its 2nd timing chain. Variable valve timing? Subaru: none, predates it. Honda: 3 Vtec solenoids, 2 failed, 1 leaked oil severely when actuated. CV axles? Tie: Subaru both fronts. Honda left broke, right has torn open boot (replacement is on the way) Edit: got T-boned by a Cadillac suv less than a day after I wrote this, the Honda is totaled.

Subaru is a love hate relationship. Ive seen a lot of failures because of lack of maintenance or poor tuning, overly aggressive driving, etc. they are well known for head gasket issues, but they’re also one of the easier cars to do head gaskets on. Personally I prefer the NA Subarus and have a 2008 base Impreza that has been going 6 years strong despite being beat on by my ex wife for years (who killed multiple vehicles including one of my SVXs).

Many of Subaru’s reliability issues can be attributed to their OEM piston material and small distance between the top ringland and the top of the piston. Solution is quality forged pistons and rods. Many Subaru owners be like I could not possibly spend $15-20-$30,000+ on a engine build so they don’t have the deep pockets so stock stuff breaks then they talk crap and join the hater bandwagon. Solution spend the money on an actual built engine. Go with a fully built IAG. They are the pros for a reason and they have the R&D to back it . Good info on net Are the Pistons Just Weak? Weak? ... No Brittle? ... Absolutely While detonation is what damages the pistons, it's important to know that the EJ20 (EJ207 / EJ205), EJ25 (EJ255 / EJ257), and FA20 all have brittle pistons due to Subaru's material and design choices. The pistons are cast hypereutectic aluminum-silicon (Al-Si) alloy; a very common material choice for modern engines. Well proven engines like the 2JZGTE, 4G63, SR20DET, RB26DETT, LSX, K-Series, and others all use Al-Si alloys. However, Al-Si alloys can vary depending on the percentage of silicon in the material. Subaru has opted for a "hypereutectic" alloy which is a high-silicon (12+%) mix. This makes the piston have extremely low thermal expansion, and allows Subaru to run an extremely tight piston-to-bore clearance. The high-silicon content also makes the piston considerably stronger than aluminum itself. For example, a 9% silicon (by wt.) alloy has a 14% higher yield strength than a 7% silicon alloy. This strength comes at a cost: fracturing. When you take a sledgehammer and hit a steel hood, the steel simply deforms under the pressure of the hammer strike, leaving a dent. When you take the same sledgehammer and hit a window, the block shatters the window. That is because the window material reacts to the strike by fracturing rather than deforming. When you add silicon to aluminum it acts more and more like the window glass. Detonation energy ironically enough, acts like the hammer.

Sadly 5 speed boxes are not strongest, we had on our JDM Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon which was running 555.5bhp straight cut 5 speed PPG, that box was quite strong, we used our wagon for quarter mile drag strip, usually 3rd gear is weakest point on 5 speed, this is gear which usually fails first Not sure how much it would cost to get PPG with helical gears if you don't like straight cut noise or rather swap for 6 speed? Good luck there

Jared and the Subaru haters in the USA! I have a few of the original 89-94 Turbo 2.2ejt HOT AIR intake! No intercooler and no extra tuning stuff that is possible for today. I have several very old videos on RU-vid which I was learning about spectator racing and the first thing that I did was a granger valve and turned it up to the cutt off!but I had a buddy that was a hill climbing guy that knew how to trick this problem and I started to use race gas starting with 108 and double the stock boost pressures.but this Fn car was a hertz rental car and it literally still has over 275+ miles on the original design engine that has a bigger Turbo know and with oxygenated race fuel and a single extra injector it's last race it was just about 30 psi and still no intercooler and I had used a wide range O2 sensor to make sure that it was not leaning out! Bye the way if anyone is interested in the videos look for claremont nh twinn state spectator racing and look for the seriously loud 93 legacy and see the difference from the first racing year and the entire difference of the last race's in that same 24 month period. I have to put on the entire difference of the start in 07-2016! From a 20s sec laps to the point of sub 14s in a 1th mile circle and the speed is crazy to the point that the track would have a few specific race's against a actual race car and at the end before being not able to use it as a Street car the speed of the back stretch was over 121mph from the 68-70 starting point. So I currently have a few more subarus and a very rare 2013 wrx that came from Vermont sports car and the body is not a 2013 but a 2015 that was a mule for testing purposes for all REAL wrc championship car's? If a small group in Vermont is capable of winning championships and setting a huge amount of records and it literally doesn't have issues with blowing up engines in the newest version car's including the latest Pastrana GL X hooning car? Is it possible that it is actually the cause of ownership and being greedy by over boosting a basic engine that was not designed For boosting with open cell decks unlike the original 2.2 that is very easy to make huge power and superior reliability from the 90s? Or are non sooby owners/ownership builer and build it like every single other engine and knowledge of the limits of the standard USDM version 2.5 over square outback based limitations until you can correctly build your standard engine that has a very limited range of extra boosting levels. But again subarus for real quick driving on loose dirt/snow and have the car turn when the regular standard standing up inline engines like to push out and get tangled in the tree's and then it has to be mentioned safety as a result is a must for me and the people who I care about. But again this was solved in the early 90s that you have to ask was it Subaru Fujitsu to point at? Or did it really start with the whole 2002 bogeyed usdm version and not the GC8 VERSIONS from jdm? Limits boys limits or build to the boosting target! No race engines have a warranty except for a hellcat or someone following that one?

Any question or problem with this horribly drawn-out statement? I was simply trying to say if the old 2.2 Turbo and NA engines have zero trouble with running 3-500k?what is the change in the engine design that makes the 2.5 and 2.0 usdm version so fragile with coming apart when it has all the availability of tuning them correctly? I'm 50 and a big boy I can take the criticism. And I have practical experience with a wide variety of fuji products including suzuki samurai and other products and I have a few old and new Mopar car's.
