The Questionable Garage is where Jared comes up with some crazy builds, basic builds, and some tool advice along the way! Hopefully you are able to learn something while you are here.
Subaru WRX motors are absolutely junk! Everyone I know with them and every single one that has come through the Auto auction I work at is garbage. We had 1 that came through ok but before it came through a brand new motor was installed. The neighbors kid bought a 2016 and 48 hours later the front on the motor left the chat. A fist sized hole in it.
The GC/GD chassis is not the same as the GH+. I’ve owned to many STIs, and built to many since 04, it’s evident to me. When talking the 04-06 USDM STI, you get the jspec spec C package standard, which was deleted in 07 to decrease the production costs. The first 3 production years for the US were Spec C cars missing only the Steering ratio, and the 207 obviously. All spec C part numbers match the 04-06 USDM right to even the sti spec Cs lighter windows among the other spec c parts being present and verifiable by part numbers on the cars. The list is actually quite large, as to the parts that would be deleted starting in 07. Shortened wheel base, smaller sway bars, no spec C suspension components (to many parts to list here), no spec C tuned struts or spring rates, no reinforced strut towers, no group n strut mounts, no stiffer shifter bushings with the short throw shifter, among many other parts missing after the 06 year. Then there is preference parts, such as I prefer the older electromagnetic DCCD, especially the 06 year with its then new center mechanical limited slip added. I also love the old school Momo designed interior of the 07 and earlier Sti, which they unfortunately switched out all of the Momo badges in there for Sti badges in 05, but can be found in some early 04 cars like JDM in places. Engine wise, the later dual AVCS heads are better flowing, besides the advantage of the dual AVCS, but the deletion of the Sodium filled stainless exhaust valves was a bummer. But yes, engine wise besides that and the smaller coolant pump and small things, that aspect remained the same since 04. I will agree with you engine wise, to an extent, but that’s about it. I won’t argue the difference between the STI and WRX, people should understand the difference and limitations with the WRXs shallow oil pan, pickup, and smaller water pump before they tune anything. The STI was built purposely with certain parts for a reason. But that’s a different story isn’t it? There is plenty of publications, even small articles from R&T and C&R, from the 07-08 era explaining the deletion and replacement of parts in these cars. Heck even Wikki get some of this info right.
@@fynetuneyrgf Oh oh oh yeah I get what you are saying. Sorry I was focused on the engine since this video/Donut/MotoIQ were mostly focused on engine reliability. Yeah to me the 1st gen Impreza is still my favorite. So light and tossable, but also stable. Just feels different. Even the GD/GG just feels a lit heavier and floatier to me. I haven't had the privilege of driving a lot of STI models, but in some ways the later models were more capable and certainly stiffer. Lap times demonstrate that as well, but the feel definitely changes. Still, my dream car is a V6 STI. 😁
Donut media high low builds been quite disappointing if you are Subaru owner At first and most get forged engine with pistons and rods and ARP headstuds if you are planning to run serious power or anything above 1.4bar,stock EJ25 have like we are calling them in UK chocolate pistons, headstuds are not up to job etc.. 6 speed gearbox is must, although we run 5 speed straight cut PPG with 555.5bhp on our JDM Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon, miss that bloody wagon 😢 and if you are really planning on upgrading the car then get STi, it's better starting car, have Brembo brakes and 6 speed etc If your Subaru is modified change oil like every 5k miles, that's what we do our current JDM Subaru Impreza STi Hawkeye which is running 500bhp with 500lbft and use quality oil etc, is worth it Friend have non turbo SUBARU Impreza and that car done like 350 000 km and same engine and half of his life was running on LPG I still think EJ25 is one of the worst engines, good old EJ20 or EJ22T been best, but sadly I don't think USA had them
i had a 1974 e300 with a 302,,, was the best first vehicle i could have asked for. taught myself how to drive stick with the 3 on the tree by going up and down our little driveway, thanks for bringing back some good memories. p.s.- those steering boxes are a paint to replace, especially in winter time outside!
Problem with Subarus is definitely the owners. And the ridiculous emissions placed on vehicles. Every issue with vehicles is emissions related. Trying to burn clean.
So yet again another Subaru that has an issue because someone did not do something correctly but ya lets blame the brand and car SMH the accountability in todays society is ridicules. That engine looks rough it has oil leaking everywhere. I have a gut feeling that who ever all worked on it wasn't the best mechanic/tuner on Subarus and my gut was correct in the tuning so far.
Donut did not do everything right. Donut people have no idea what they are doing with Subarus and most other cars to be frank. Broken subbies are inflicted because people don't know what they are doing or don't maintenance and take care of it and when it doesn't work or breaks they blame the car and say they are junk. If you don't want to change your oil or do proper maintenance because you are lazy and beat your car to hell buy a Honda.
Subarus are great cars, if you don’t heavily modify them, at that point your just asking for it. Tasteful mods like FMIC, upgraded radiator, oil cooler and a simple safe tune, is all you need. 150k miles original motor my 2015 wrx is still healthy, just need to change the timing chain thats it
If they deleted the o2 code it's either because they went catless or highflow and the tuner couldn't get the car to be happy otherwise. Deleting the MAF means he's on Speed Density
Problem 1 - IAG & an over built block without pushing close to the power Problem 2 - Tuner Problem 3 - IAG block Problem 4 - most people don't consider maintenance to be the reason the car died
There are WAAAY too many videos online of how "car guys" treat cars. They absolutely abuse cars in ways that I didn't think possible. Then they want to cry and blame the car when it breaks. ESPECIALLY in the Subaru world. Forums are full of these goofballs who destroy the car and then part out what's left. Most of them don't even know what kind of oil to put in them let alone change it when they are supposed to. It's a four cylinder with relatively high compression for a turbo motor. If you can't comprehend what that means and everything that comes from that then get the fuck away from the car. It's like people who buy animals and but don't know how to take care of them.
I've had several cars over the years, but my 11 year old Subaru is doing far better than any Ford I've had as far as issues go, save for a growing number of electrical gremlins. It handles great in the snow and I don't dread going in for annual inspections like I used to with my other cars. Granted, this is just a stock, daily driver versus a tuned setup, but yeah, I still have the Subaru love regardless.
Oh man we have owned numerous Subarus and we have a Ford now that was basically just too good a deal to pass up and oof. Having worked on this one and a few other Fords, just no for me. XD
I keep Rain-X on my cars & at speed, don't need to use the wipers as I find them to be a distraction... It is important to apply on a very clean window. So I wet the glass & use a fine steel wool to remove all particles from the glass, & when dry, apply the Rain-X evenly, with a disposable paper towel. Then, when set, you will notice a change/ flash... you can then use your squeegee & window wash , twice, to clean the window. & except for low speed, you will not need the wipers :-) Thank you for your videos. & you are right, my sister is on her 3rd Subaru, but I am hoping to change her to a Toyota or Honda for reliability, as she is now on disability, so a smaller RAV-4 from the 2012 or earlier area may be better for her. AWD as she is in the snow, but 4 cylinder for okayish MPG... I do like your videos, very different from many, & you tackle some really tough things, like that EV Pickup... wow! But, you have this one going back to The Tuner for a tweak. I feel, That will be a Problem Solved. Thank you, again :-) (I almost feel it Should be: Keep It Stupidly Simple.)
Glass blower and glass color maker here. Don't use steel wool on your glass! It will scratch, even if micro scratches that your filling in with rain x.
Well yeah hug him because his car probably has a blown headgasket. The map sensor is getting hot because the sensor is bad most likely bought a bad 1 from brand new
Oh lord yes. After a long quest I found my second and perfect Subaru. Black impreza hatch, 5 speed. And yes, it was horrid and broke weekly. But when you did get it driving, it was exceptional fun to drive. I finally had to park it because after having the tranny completely redone, complete with master and slaves, it quit shifting 1500 miles later again.
Sadly 5 speed boxes are not strongest, we had on our JDM Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon which was running 555.5bhp straight cut 5 speed PPG, that box was quite strong, we used our wagon for quarter mile drag strip, usually 3rd gear is weakest point on 5 speed, this is gear which usually fails first Not sure how much it would cost to get PPG with helical gears if you don't like straight cut noise or rather swap for 6 speed? Good luck there
I had a Subaru Legacy GT and it was mostly stock with just some bolt-ons and a tune. It wasn’t particularly fast, but it was quick enough. 160k miles and not a single issue with just normal maintenance. Stay mildly modified, and get a good tune and Subarus can be somewhat reliable. And, dammit, once you started driving you had me wanting to be back into a turbo Subaru. I do miss it.
That first track any last words was really good. I also liked the 3rd and the 4th. That 2nd song I thought Jared was going to put the grinder down and start twerkin! That was a twerkin song! lol jk Keep up the good work Jared and Duane.
I can't invest any more time into this divestment automobile. My dad purchased a new car so we pieced this out and redistributed the income EVENLY amongst all parties.
So you claim that forums give misinformation, yet you say the 5 speed broke and it now has a 6 speed, that generation STI came with a 6 speed. The fact that he blew the motor at 2k and it wasn't fixed under warranty, the guy sounds like an idiot. The fact that he blew up an STI 6 speed (which is a very durable trans) and grenaded the motor that quick says that he beats the absolute dog shit out of that car. You claim that the worst thing for a mechanic to have roll into his bay is a heavily modified car, yet you threw no shade at the modifications or how they were done, just a lot of bashing Subaru, when the entire problem was improper modification/tuning. Yup Subaru's are junk. I own a 16 STI and it's been an absolutely fantastic car.
Looks more likely that he have WRX not STi and he is making from his WRX STI, 6 speed boxes are quite strong and they in stock form hold easily 700bhp, 2k on engine after he blew up, stock EJ25 are not strongest engines, if he had EJ207 then that engine would be "okay" to 450-500bhp beyond that forged engine EJ25 literally damaged Subaru reputation of reliable car, whoever came up with EJ25 🤦
My truck had a problem where the speedometer quit working, and the abs light came on. The transmission wouldn't shift shift because it had no VSS signal. I replaced the sensor, opened up the wiring, traced it, and couldn't find any issues. I replaced the wires and pigtail completely, tested the front wheel speed sensors, couldn't figure it out. I let a shop try, and the occasionally messed with it over 6 months and couldn't figure it out. I decided to try swapping the ecu, and it fixed it. The only time in my life it actually was an ecu out of all the times I heard it with various vehicles.
