Final concert was watched by 11.7 million people on the CBC(national tv station) They launched one last tour after the lead singer was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Amazing band that is always telling a story with their lyrics.

For some perspective to any non-Canadians, 11.7 million people would be ~33% of our entire population in 2016. Accounting for age demographic breakdowns somewhere around 41% of all adult Canadians tuned in for at least part of that concert. It would be like the farewell tour of any US band getting over ONE HUNDRED MILLION viewers on CBS accounting for relative population. There really isn't anyone or anything for other countries like The Hip were and still are for Canada.

Thanks for doing the Hip as we call them in Canada. I love the fact that you will react to music that is not as well known but gems. Other Hip songs Courage, Twist my Arm, Wheat Kings, New Orleans is Sinking. The Hip didn't make it all that big in the States but they were beloved in Canada. Unfortunately Gordon Downie the lead singer and lyrist passed away from the same brain cancer as Neil Peart from Rush. The Hip did a farewell tour before Gordon passed and it was televised commercial free across Canada.

The Hip are/were a Canadian National Treasure. Their last concert was watched by more Canadians than any other TV show in Canadian history.

I was departing Vancouver on a cruise to Alaska that night. Had just seen the Hamilton show three days earlier. I sat on the rear deck watching on my phone as we sailed under that beautiful bridge in Vancouver harbour. I’ve never felt more Canadian than in that moment and I cried like a baby for a few minutes. The bravest musical performance I’ll ever see. Watched until my service cut out.

This is my hometown band! Kingston Ontario Canada 🇨🇦. I grew up with there guys. A lot of mutual friends. They still live here. Really down to earth guys 🎸

Interesting observation Chod. I was at University in the bands hometown of Kingston, Ontario when they were starting out. Three of them were students at Queen's while I was there. I heard them play many times in their early days before they had written a lot of their own stuff. A typical set would have hard rocking, driving songs that got everyone up out of their chairs and onto the dance floor. Susie Q, For Your Love, Good Morning Little School Girl......early Stones.....Great musicians that practiced a lot, loved playing and even went to class on occasion 😆🤣!

Seeing The Hip live was a right of passage. I saw them at another road side attraction and at other venues. Wheat Kings and Three Pistols and Boscageon are just genius.

The title phrase is something that Gord Downie’s grandma used to explain taking a soufflé out of the oven and blowing gently on it to cool it down but not so hard as to cause the dough to collapse. It’s unusually not a metaphor but a real thing. The rest of the lyrics are a mystery to me.

when I first saw little bones, went to CD warehouse and tried to explain the song. the young lad got it right, but gave me the road apples album. blown away walked into the store the next day. got it wrong I said, bought up to here, want to return the wrong CD? no way dude..... best band ever

Definitely!! A great concert of theirs on youtube is their Woodstock '99 concert that was televised at the time. Audience was massive. In the US, but so many Canadian flags in the audience. They were truly our national band.

I always enjoyed the lyrics of Tragically Hip songs. The are almost always telling an unknown but important story. The only criticism I can make is they never, to my knowledge, really let those guitars rip. Like virtuosic blues or rock guitar where guys who can really play, like John Mayer or Keith Urban, would describe it as entering into that zone where you are "flying." I think if they had done that they would have hit it really big time, instead of relying almost completely on Gord Downie's vocals. So much of these things can simply boil down to the interplay of the personalities and egos in the band. And I don't know the band well enough to go any further with an analysis. But my oldest niece did go to one of their concerts here in Calgary when she was a teenager, ha, ha! 😉😏🎸😎

Oh yes please!! And find some footnotes before you dig in on the politics/ history that the song is about. Was a huge crisis in Canada, a federal cabinet minister (Canadian government official) was kidnapped and ultimately murdered by a terrorist group. This was when Justin Trudeau's dad Pierre Elliott Trudeau was Prime Minister. He engaged the War Measures Act and had to bring in the military to deal with the situation. It was before my time, but a wild time, apparently.
