@@SimonH109 Yes. Rush is the best Canadian band of all time. I mean, you could make an argument for The Guess Who...but I dunno. Rush was a pioneering band, inspiring millions and spawning hundreds of prog bands in their wake. The Guess Who may have had better sales, but I don't think they had the same impact on MUSIC as a whole. So my vote goes to Rush.

The Hip and Gord Downie were able to unite a generation across socioeconomic and political decides. They are the soundtrack to a generation specifically and ripple through generations like a subtle wave across Canadian society. They made deep though and live to be okay. It always boggles the mind for those of us that grew up with The Hip vibe as part of our life how the rest of the world never got "IT" but in the end it doesn't matter. They did so much good and that will be a apart of a society for years to come. You never question what you have until it's gone.

Gordon Downie was a Poet. One of Canada’s treasures. Start looking into them. You will not be disappointed. Their songs have great story’s in them. Such as wheat kings which is about a man wrongly convicted of murder. The lyrics are great, in every song. Too many to mention. The Hips story is incredible. Gord got terminal brain cancer, but was so determined to do one last cross country tour. The last show was broadcasted across the country, even the prime minister was there. Watch the documentary Long Time Running. It’s all about that tour. We miss him dearly up here.

The fact that Gord Downie, who was suffering from terminal brain cancer at the time, did a full tour of Canada as a last hurrah, and it felt like such a bittersweet good-bye. It felt great to see them live one last time, but heartbreaking knowing that he was facing his mortality. Sadly when he passed in 2017 it felt like everyone had a piece of their heart torn, myself included. Bobcaygeon is one of my top songs from Tragically Hip.

I remain dumbstruck / fascinated / thrilled / incredibly moved by the fact that Canada essentially shut down for the final concert, broadcast live on the CBC in Canada and free over the internet - something that was greatly appreciated by those of us who were living abroad at the time. I remember locking myself into my home office (aka "spare bedroom"), telling my family I would be unavailable for the next couple of hours, and watching the spectacle of Gord - whose illness I understood from a friend's terminal experience with it - and I knew how incredibly difficult it must have been for him to just remember the damn lyrics. The fact that our Prime Minister attended that last concert. The crowds all across the country who were outside, in the cold, watching the show on huge projected screens. It was a unifying moment for many of us - coming together, nationwide and worldwide, to 'be with Gord'. The thought of it still moves me to tears.

Hi, Canadian here. This here is Gord Downie. The poet of a generation. I'm 40yo, and The Hip has been the soundtrack of my life since I was 15yo. Gord pours his entire soul into every song. When he died of brain cancer a couple of years ago, 11 million Canadians poured out into the streets of every town in Canada (population 30ish millions btw), watching live and singing in unison and crying in public to his last song of his last show on projections and screens erected in park, community centers, schools, etc... One third of the population of Canada was saying goodbye and thank you, and that was a hockey night too! Saw them live 15-ish times in various venues. To this day when I hear this song I start crying like a baby... He wasn't just a singer to a lot of Canadians. They never really broke it in the States, but they had a good run and are well known in Buffalo... Highly recommend Grace, Too and Fiddler's Green.

Bobcaygeon, Fiddlers's Green, Locked in the truck of acar, Wheatkings, Nautical Diseaster, New Orleans is sinking, Grace Too, At the 100th Meridian, blow it at high dough...Sadly Gord Downie died of a brain tumour. He did a cross Canada four when he was dying to say goodbye. The last concert was recorded and aired in Canada. All televisions were tuned to that concert. I cried a lot. It was so magical.

Gord downie the lead singer was very unique and was very involved in charity and standing up for our native population He sadly passed in 2017 from brain cancer. They won basically every award they could in Canada In 2016. They played their last concert live on the CBC across Canada. Which almost everyone watched here They have 14 albums including one live album. They were known for long long tours and going everywhere in Canada Sorry for how long this was but I hope it helps pple get into the hip. If this is your first Hip song, what a random pick. Great song but not what I would suggest to get someone into the band and cool to see you both "get it" with one of their mellower, underrated songs. The reason they can affect people deeply is because they are all about emotion, and their subtlety and abstraction in both the lyrics and music allows the listener to bring their own life experiences to the lines- it becomes your own. His lyrics are often more about wordplay and creating a series of images than how more straightforward writers approach things. Welcome to the world of The Hip!

I am so thankful that I was able to see the Hip for the first time (and what would their final time) in Houston at the House of Blues in 2015, a couple of years before Gord passed. I'll treasure the memory of that concert for the rest of my life. Grew up in Canada and really only song of theirs I knew was "Ahead By The Century", which I really liked, but I did not dig deeper into their catalogue. Was in a Pop/R&B/ Adult Contemporary head space at the time. Fast forward at least a decade and started to really check out their back catalogue in an effort to discover new music. Discovered so many great songs of theirs that reminded me of my childhood in Canada, and after seeing them in 2015, I understood why they are considered one of the greatest Canadian bands. They had hit after hit, but for some reason never made it big in the US. If you watch the tragically hip documentary "a long time running", it makes you weep man. After his brain surgery he had to re-learn all of their songs to go on that last tour. I have been listening to the Hip literally my whole life. You will NOT regret going on a Tragically Hip journey! Every single song is beautifully written! I also suggest watching some lives because no one works a mic stand like Gord Downie! 💖

Oh no... you’re in trouble. If you go down the tragically hip rabbit hole, it will change the way you look at music. I went to my first of 4 hip concerts when I was 19. I’m turning 49 in 2 weeks. The tragically hip takes you places.. the poetic skill Gord Downey possesses and the ability for you to have to dissect the lyrics, instead of them being spelled out for you is the best. Other songs you must check out. 1. Bobcageon 2. Nautical disaster 3. Escape is at hand for the travelling man. 4. The last recluse 5. Scared. These are some of my favourites for how they evoke emotions from nowhere.

The band name is The Tragically Hip. Their song title is “It’s a Good Life If You Don’t Weaken”. And DEFINITELY check out the rest of their albums. It would also do you a World of good to check out the members’ solo albums. It’s all “the shit” (awesome, awesome stuff). Gord Downie released a solo project called Secret Path. It’s about a 12-year old Anishinaabe boy (Chanie Wenjack) who died after running away from his Residential School. If you want a gentler introduction to the topic of the Residential School system, please check out the Secret Path project.

I found you because I'm a huge USA Hip Fan. To say America was ripped off by not getting the Hip is an understatement. Nice choice. Try Springtime in Vienna or Locked in the Trunk or Ahead by a Century or..... Well you have an entire um, discology to get through. Enjoy and Happy 4th.

Gordie and the Hip are national treasures in Canada and we miss him very much. His music keeps his spirit and voice alive. There are soooo many songs in their catalogue. Grace Too, 100th Meridian, Wheat Kings, New Orleans is sinking, Locked in the Trunk of a Car, Bobcaygeon, 38 Years Old, etc etc. Take a dart and pick a song. They are all fantastic.

I am not sure of all that has been discussed about this song, so I will add my personal perception. I think that you need to understand the meaning of the "forget your skates dream" which for Canadian kids is a traumatic event. Imagine being on a hockey team and it is your responsibility to have your gear ready for a 6 am practice because ice time is precious. And your DAD has to take you to the arena and bring you home before he goes off to work. You have packed your hockey equipment, and on the drive to the arena you realize that you have forgotten your skates. Imagine the look on your Dad's face (full of meaning), as to almost glow. Now imagine your remorse, how you will make up for this, and how you will never let this moment out of your mind. It's a metaphor all right. And your only solution is to commit yourself to doing things that are needed, and rebuild your self esteem.

They tell stories about Canada, its history and its issues. They have been the sound track to the lives of many Canadians. Their last show was broadcast on National television where it was reported that almost 12 million Canadians tuned in...1/3 the population of Canada.

So happy to see you react to The Tragically Hip. You got a glimpse of why they’re the most beloved band in Canada over the past 30 years. The lead singer , Gord Downey , was more than a singer/song writer ... he was a poet and a performer. They have a huge catalogue of amazing songs. Check out “Ahead by a Century”. One of countless songs that , somehow , will just affect you on a deep level.

That's the Hip man. Inexplicably amazing. It's like...at first glance, they're just a generic alt-rock band from Canada. But that's just their disguise. They lure you in with sweet riffs and familiar song structures, but the unique qualities of Downie's voice, combined with the exceptional lyricism, has ensnared many a first-time listener. If you want to really plumb the depths of this band, their true nature...listen to or _Grace, Too_ from their 1994 album "Day for Night." Or _Ahead by a Century_ from their 1996 album "Trouble at the Henhouse." They are exceptional, but it's hard to pinpoint why.
