The sound you heard at the beginning of the song was a bird known as a loon. For anyone who has camped beside a lake in Canada, you would wake up to the call of the loon wafting over the water. This is the same bird that is on our one-dollar coin and why it is nicknamed a loonie.

The song is about a 16 year old who was wrongly convicted of murder and spent 23 years in Jail before being exonerated. The song is mostly about the lyrics.

For Canadians, this song meant a lot more as it evoked the Canadian Loon, at the beginning, the reference to places adorned with pictures of our parents' prime ministers, and the reference to wrongly-convicted James Milgaard. The tune itself is, as you said, nice, but as I commented for the previous song, this band is a bar band with great lyrics. It will always be the lyrics that will stand out most to other people.

There are songs that you hear for the first time that are easy. They’re catchy, simple and get radio play. You like the song, but after awhile you quickly grow tired of it and don’t want to listen to it anymore. The Tragically Hip created songs exactly the opposite. You may listen to one of their songs for the first time and think it’s okay, but the more you hear it the more the song grows on you and the more you understand the brilliance of the music.. The depth, the poetry, the meaning and the sound get rooted in you and a connection is made. I think one of the reasons the Hip never got rooted in the States was the meh reaction a song would receive after being played once. Play “I’m a Barbie girl, from a Barbie world” and it would receive a different first reaction and get air time whereas the Hip wouldn’t. Surface level music is what is successful in the US.

One of my favourite songs by the Hip. The sound at the beginning of the song is a bird called the Loon. You would hear the call when out camping by the lake. This song is based on a true story about David Milgaard who was falsely accused of rape and murder and spent 20 years in jail unjustly. He was from my hometown of Winnipeg and Winnipeg is in the province of Manitoba which is one of the prairie provinces. There is a hockey team called the Brandon Wheat Kings. I like the line 'Nobody is interested in what you didn't do.' There are many sides to the Hip.

Gordie Downie is a wonderful poet, this song beautifully captures this very emotional story and it is done with incredible respect. Beautiful song, superb guitar arrangements. Mr. Downie, RIP, you are very much missed. Peace

Well I was 24 when this album came out, and anyone in Canada would (and should) have know about this songs meaning. The wrongly convicted of rape and murder David Milgaard. Over 20 years spent in prison until released. This song was released shortly after he was set free. Wheat Kings are farmers and the Paris of fhe Praries is the city of Saskatoon in Saskatchewan (a prarie province). The Hip were uniquely Canadian and several of their songs would go over many peoples heads. Great live band that had a slew of fantastic songs.

The lyrics of this song have a very deep meaning of a true story of an innocent man convicted of murder that served 23 yrs before his conviction was overturned in Canada

Wheat King itself is meant to represent a iconic image that one sees all over the Canadian West. Every small town and city has tall semi-abandoned solitary wooden grain elevators that cast long shadows over their surroundings. They instantly geographically ground you and tell you where you are in Canada and give the song a familiar location

Is Wheat Kings based on a true story? The Tragically Hip Pay Tribute to "Wheat Kings" Inspiration ... The Tragically Hip's "Wheat Kings" - the beloved acoustic-led number from their celebrated 1992 album Fully Completely - references the story of David Milgaard, a Canadian man who spent 23 years in prison for a rape and murder he did not commit.May 16, 2022

If you think this is just "nice" (which is fine) - then you and I, do not have the same music taste lol The double acoustics (one is a 12-string I believe), the slide work, the percussion, the timing, pulse, and soul, gives such insight to be of a "let-go/detach" vibration.

Wow, WHY? You dont expose someone to a band with the shit you like, you play them the stuff that made them big and put them on the map. You might not like some of their vastly overplayed hits anymore but for a person who hasn't ever heard the band wouldn't that be the most productive and safe way to have that person want to hear more of the bands catalog? They were a straight forward rock band before they became a eclectic-hippy ballad playing band.

I have the same opinion as you, Justin. Musically, it's basic and does very little to grab my attention. Many regard him as a great poet. I have to say I've read a lot of his lyrics and, quite honestly, many of them make very little sense. I can read a Neil Peart lyric and know exactly what he's getting at and marvel how he can say so much and how artistically he does it. But with Gord Downie, they just seem like a lot of random words to me.
