The bliss of the un adulterated night sky in the woods of Canada is hard to describe and ecstasy to witness.

Fantastic to see this run of The Hip! Gord was my first poet and I grew up with his words...the immense talent reveals itself one line at a time. Keep going on the requests, but soon you'll have to see a song from the very last tour. Gordie was diagnosed with terminal and aggressive brain cancer a few years back. He chose the super invasive surgery, and then announced one last national tour. His doctors and the band had no idea if he could even stand on stage or remember the words...until he started. He made it across the country with astonishing performances and it was the most incredible fan interaction. The most beloved poet/performer in Canada, where everyone knew, including Gordie, that this was the last time. The emotions as he killed the shows and the true love in the overwhelming ovations as everyone got to thank him and say how much the loved him one last time. And he showed all the love right back. Spectacular. The very last show was in the band's home town of KIngston (they all grew up together), it was broadcast live nationally on CBC, and the country stopped and gathered together to watch. The last song he sang was Ahead by a Century...the performance and his goodbye is...love.

It’s pronounced Bob Cage Un! It’s a rural cottage country town, located about a 2 hour drive from Toronto! P.S., thanks for giving the world access to Canadian bands and music! You did the world a favor playing these videos!!😊😊

I’m an astrophotographer in my spare time. My wife has a small island up north of Parry Sound, with an old cabin on it. The island is surrounded on all sides with crown land, so the only light emitted near us would be from nearby campers. It’s located about an hour north of Bobcaygeon. Every year, we drive up there for a week and I get some beautiful shots. I mention this because it adds depth to the line about seeing the constellations revealing themselves on star at a time. One needs to drive a couple hundred kilometres north of Toronto to see them, which makes them that much more stunning for folks from the big city. Bobcaygeon is one of those century-old towns that hasn’t lost its character, even as the region is overrun by very, very wealthy people building monster “cottages” on seemingly all of the hundreds of small, interconnected lakes located there, surrounded by ancient rocks and pine trees as far as the eye can see.

The Precambrian Shield will turn even the humblest of us into poets. "Ancient rocks and pine trees as far as the eye can see" is truth, my friend. Megwich.

Gord Downie was the conscience of Canada, extraordinary writer and performer. The band is just a great guitar band period!

When I saw them @ Hamilton Place, back in the day, he walk out into the middle of the crowd on the backs of the chairs while singing. Always an amazing showman. He is forever missed here in Canada. ❤

I think you have earned the right to call them “the hip”. Saw them for the first time at a bar in Kingston when they were just getting started.

Rory Its been great to watch your reactions to all of the Hip videos on your page. You get it!! Its so fun to watch someone else get what the hip are about. Then the next level is to dig into the lyrics and the subtle meanings, and yes the Canadiana. We are an ocean a part but I feel like we could talk this over a pint or a dozen!

It would be really cool to hear YOUR cover version of this deeply beloved HIP classic. It would likely serve your soulful and melodic voice, very well.

I love that you have been getting into the Tragically Hip. Seen them about 5 times live, every show was amazing - the band and the fans 10/10 Edit: You should find their concert dvd "That Night in Toronto" probably their best live version. cheers

This is an excerpt from an article published in the New York Times when Gord Downie passed... The place of honor that Mr. Downie occupies in Canada’s national imagination has no parallel in the United States. Imagine Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Michael Stipe combined into one sensitive, oblique poet-philosopher, and you’re getting close. The Tragically Hip’s music “helped us understand each other, while capturing the complexity and vastness of the place we call home,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement on Wednesday. “Our identity and culture are richer because of his music, which was always raw and honest - like Gord himself.”

DO "38 YEARS OLD". One of the best story telling songs in the world. So deep. Do the studio version with lyrics. Amazing!

This is one of the reasons why The Hip didn't really break the international market (in addition to them not really caring to): the Canadiana in their lyrics, with references to Canadian places, culture, historical events, etc. Canada has become more popular in recent years, but just 15-20 years ago Canadian content and talent would've been a hard sell to the US market without scrubbing it of much of its Canadian-ness so that it would blend in with American offerings and thus be more palatable to Americans.

Have you heard New Orleans is sinking? If not listen to that then check out his live version called Killer Whale Tanks... you will see he (Gordy) Always has a little story for most of his songs that he will insert half way through his songs.... Keep reacting to these guys ( The Hip) Seeing as how Canada Day is comming up its nice to be reminded of one of our nations best known Bands Check ya later.... EH!

Omg 🤦🏼‍♂️. I cannot believe it took me till this comment to get this reference. I always took it as just “listening “ to Willie Nelson. ….like he ever sang romantic songs 😂.

Song about a policeman working to stop an historic anti-semitism race riot in Toronto. In my interpretation of his lyrics, he decides to quit all this nonsense and go back to his girl in Bobcaygeon- a cottage country, rural village east of Toronto.
