Once, he presided over the third largest newspaper empire in the entire world. He also was a celebrated author with massive biographies of both Franklin Roosevelt and Richard Nixon to his credit. But that was all before he served three years in federal prison for fraud and obstruction of justice. From his mansion in Toronto, Conrad Black talks to California Lawyer editor Martin Lasden about his spectacular rise and fall, and the protracted legal battles that he has waged to clear his name. he's absolutely right about the justice system, it is totally rigged, and seriously corrupt... unfortunately this system put's ten's of thousands of innocent people in prison every year, and they don't have the advantage of being famous and rich... That being said, I have empathy for him, because I was incarcerated in prison for years, and it's a life changing experience.. I would like to see people like this use their education to help others that have no one to represent them..

Interviewer Martin Lasden is well-informed and calmly moves the interview through the complex recent life of Conrad Black. I have read most of Black's biographical and historical work and still found this interview fair and edifying.

What an interesting interview! Both Black and Lasden are gentlemen, both well-informed and both have a sense of humour. Such a contrast to the 'tabloid'style interviews by the BBC which really, really generated more heat than light. I cannot know what Conrad Black has or has not done, but he is one very interesting person.

At last, Conrad Black is someone who seems to understand the often brutal behavior of the legal system.

When the state sides with someone they know to be corrupt in hopes of getting someone they suppose must be corrupt we have no justice at all.

It wasn't as simple as that. Do you have respect for people who use their government position to deny the rights of others because of their political beliefs?

As an admirer of Black , his intellect and sincerity, I find it very unfortunate that he is now backtracking on the issue of humility. Perhaps time and his wife have had an effect. He appears smug once again, sometimes cagey. especially on the host's note that he came close to being convicted of all the allegations. I notice in his recent interviews that he does not mention his specific faith, Catholicism, simply noting that he is a Christian.

He is a snob of the 1st order. He bought his peerage. Lord Black-we dont recognize terms like Sir, Count, etc in Canada. His writing is so boring-like his speech.

What is striking about Black isn't how much more humble he is now, but how little he's changed. Still a pompous and self-pitying cad. I have never seen any evidence of the depth, insight, brilliance or wit that he seems convinced he possesses. Calls himself a Christian. So did Pope Alexander VI.

He is very critical of the U.S. trial/court regime. But the Canadian regime is much worse in my view. Oddly THEY did not peruse Conrad. I have heard they are however musing such thoughts as are the British. He still has some legal problems not here mentioned... His real problem was his wife Barbara, who gloated of her fancy apparels which alerted Hollinger shareholders of a possible conradian trousering of company assets. Then his accountant, Radler, double-crossed him, fouling black harbor with an oily-like skunk odor. Still he denies any wrongdoing. A man without a country. He squats in a Toronto shed with his moll of black philandering hoping the donney issues him a pardon.

Sorry, but to compare the US system of justice to the Canadian system of justice and find the Canadian system lacking is laughable. The US has 1/4 of the world's incarcerated population in their prisons - with only 5% of the world's population. Lawsuits and putting people in prison in the US is a profitable business - guilty or not. And there are big differences in our how lawsuits are handled that make it easy and enticing for Americans to sue. Here is an article that highlights some of those differences. nationalpost.com/opinion/f-h-buckley-a-better-country-with-fewer-lawyers

Funny to note that for most of this interview he gets caught up in his own lies.
