One of my favourite classic British sports cars has always been the Triumph GT6, and in this classic car review & history video I will discuss the origin of its great engine, its Triumph Spitfire based prototype, variations between models and a general petrolhead chat about why I love it!

Thanks for the trip down memory Lane. I had a 1972 French Blue GT6 MK 3 for 60,000 miles over a cuppla years. I used it for work, driving regularly between London and Yorkshire. Since you asked...the rear suspension was as per Mk2, double wishbone, kind of! The top "wishbone" was the leaf spring clamped over the diff and in a bush at the top of the upright for the hub. The lower wishbone was much shorter between the bottom of the upright and the rear subframe. The rubber Rotax coupling in the half-shaft was there to deal with the change in length and angle between the hub and the diff as the suspension moved up and down. The gearbox had to come out through the car to do the clutch, and if you didn't put ALL the very many screws that held down the "cardboard" gearbox cover very carefully, the darn thing used to leak water in the wet!. It chewed up UJs regularly even if you drilled them and fitted grease nipples. I also had to replace the Rotax couplings once. Triumph Herald double-wishbone front suspension, of course..so a set of replacement trunnions always needed to be at hand! It had a pair of Stromberg carbs that were horrible 'kin things. And the viscous coupled fan died...so I replaced it with a pair of heater fans and a thermal switch under a head bolt (I think...). Without a capacitor-discharge box for the dizzy, it was a sod to start every time the weather forecast even mentioned rain....just like all other unsuspecting victims of Jo Lucas Prince of Darkness at the time. I loved my GT6; it was a lovely car, and herself loved it too! I wish I still had one! A cuppla my mates had Lotus Elans at the time.. used to have great fun keeping up with them around country lanes and roundabouts... I replaced it with an early Dolly Sprint, which, in my opinion, is the only real "sports car" Triumph ever built, notwithstanding the GT6. Why the TR7 was not GT6 styled with proper double-wishbone rear suspension and the Sprint 16V engine was a mystery to me... Ah, and you didn't mention the Le Mans heritage..ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PpepDRqcFCo.html&ab_channel=uksnatcher1

Ahh the GT6, as an old mechanic, the mig welder was never far away, the gearbox bearings were terrible, to do the clutches was fun and if I remember the crankshaft thrust washers wore out and there would be crank overthrow when the clutch was depressed, dove horribly ! haha, I liked the vitesse though. cheers for the walk down memory lane.

I've seen a Triumph GT6 in America -- because I own it. She's an early 1971 in white with red interior; lovely little thing.

Great video. Thanks for sharing how you do your research. I'm always impressed with your ability to quickly recognize the differences between models. This gives us insight both into the amount of research you put into your passion as well as the source of your knowledge. Thanks, Harley.

Well done video. Yes, even here in the US, Triumph was considered “upmarket “ from MG. These were all niche cars, and of course, the MG was the biggest seller, especially the “B”, as the Midget was considered a bit Too small. Triumph sold less, but still had a decent enough following. Then Lotus. There was a Dealership not too far away from where I grew up. They sold all British imports [ and eventually became a BL Dealer.] I used to walk in as a kid. No one ever said anything to me as I walked around looked inside, pored through the brochures, and watched the mechanics. Looking back, I’m pretty amazed that they just let me. 📻🙂

In 1971 I visited Standard Triumph factory with college. Thinking back on that day I can remember seeing Spitfires, Dolomites etc on the production lines. But was disappointed not to see GT6's or TR's which were my interest ! I always liked the TR4's & TR5's, not so much the TR6 though !! Keep up the the good work with your vids Harley 👍

Well, if you ever come to Norfolk with your Dad, I'd be delighted to take you out in my unmarked 1973 GT6. Only 41,000 miles from new. I had one just after my student days, a Mk 2, which went to Switzerland several times. The Mk 3 is red. I have a few other classics, Austins A35, Somerset and 1967 A40 Farina ; my favourite is a 1951 Standard Vanguard ; I recently mentioned it to your Dad when he produced The Pilot video. So, don't delete this email, or drop a screwdriver on it!

I had a 72 GT6 Mk3 during the mid to late 80's. In Australia they were locally assembled by a company called AMI ( who also assembled vehicles from AMC and Toyota). An extremly fun car to drive, even in city traffic just plodding along with ample torque and switching the overdrive in and out in 3rd instead of changing up to 4th. The Rotoflex coupling was used by a number of other makes including Lotus. The main part was a rubber donut that handled the angular displacement and changing shaft length during suspension travel. In the end the engine needed a full rebuild and the body had terminal rust so it was sold to someone looking for a project , as I did not have the time to devote to it. Would love to get hold of one again.

wow, you'd have to watch the diff stub axles, they were weaker than the TR6 , and I snapped mine on the TR leadfooting it off the line. I had a Mk3 GT6 after my TR6, loved it but knew I had to baby it a little!

Cut my car restoration teeth on a 1973 tired MOT failure in 1985.. I never did another car as was busy with other things and interests. I sold it to my brother who in turn sold it to a BA pilot; The car is now exported! A remember the “rotoflex Suspension “ needing a special tool to set up which was unavailable! I just shimmed till I “felt “ the bearing loading was right which took a little patience; and as I was a young keen Mechanical Engineer I did as good a job with the car which ended up being three years of evenings and weekends; I wish I never sold it

Another professional video Harley - you go from strength to strength! The GT6 is my favourite 'modern' classic sports car, mostly because of the silky-smooth straight six, but also because of its looks. To my mind the cut-off rear versions are the most stylish. I've never been in a GT6, but my Dad's 2 litre Vitesse with the same engine was a joy. It went like stink and the sound from the engine was great!

agree, the Mk3 styling was nicer, I hated those same "sticking-out" tail lights of the earlier models on my Spitfire too.

It's great that you have made foray into single marque reviews based on brochures, your classic car show visits and a the start of deeper research. I love it! Made more so by you obvious enthusiasm, scripting and editing. You have come a long way, Harley, and I have enjoyed every step of your motor enthusiast journey. The pinnacle will be when you can properly do a road test as well, which will doubtless give you and your viewers pleasure. Great video - a Ned The Shed Special, shall we say! LOl Rob
