The Tromboon! Bassoon and Trombone mashup 

I didn't realize that is how dubstep is made.

As a bassoonist who has tried this, with a correct embouchure, you can get a decent sound of it without the split notes and random octave jumping. The only problem is that I've never played a trombone in my life and have no idea what I'm doing.

The tromboon works best with the small tenor trombone, when learned/played correctly you get nice comical sound effects like in the old movies as well as some scarier sounds with the split multiphonics. The angle of the bocal actually helps the sound a bit as well.

The reed came from a NZ auction site - 4 for $20. No idea what to do with them now...

Indeed, PDQ Bach was perfectly aware of the instrument's limitations; IIRC, in The Seasonings, he pretty much confines it to gliding down and up on the 5th partial, with a raspberry low E thrown in for good measure.

Apparently Peter Schickele (aka PDQ Bach) WAS a skilled bassoonist. The PDQ piece concerned was "Bide Thy Thyme" from The Seasonings, which features the Tromboon. The sleeve notes on the record cover described it as a "Hybrid" between a bassoon and a trombone.

"And that has all of two notes! A very useful instrument."

Sticking an alto saxophone mouthpiece on a tenor trombone will produce a sound that either A. Sounds really, really low and unnatural, or B. Sound like someone is setting off 70 school fire alarms at once

You drove me to laughter and tears. Too funny! Hey, try this next....inhale helium and try playing a variety of brass instruments. I had wanted to try this on the trombone, but I never got around to it. I'm thinking you could hit some wicked high notes.

PDQ Bach hilariously used one a couple of times including a deconstruction number. In it a piece of the instrument was removed after each movement, leaving only the reed for the finale. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/P._D._Q._Bach

I'm a bassoonist. But the easiest fix for this would be to cover the hole on the crook. That way you maybe able to access some lower harmonics. There is a key on the bassoon that closes it in order to access our fundamental register.

I did the same thing with my friends at band camp. A bassoon bocal also fits in a euphonium.

I tried putting a clarinet mouthpiece in my baritone and it sounds like this but about 2 octaves lower and sounds almost worse

Oh joy! I accidentally played this at high volume and cured my constipation. I think major kudos should go to Peter Schickele for re-discovering this forgotten instrument - if memory serves me right it was used or proposed by PDQ Bach (also discovered by PS) in his many unusual compositions. I must thank Mr Hamilton, too, on several levels...

I found out about 2 hours ago that if you put a clarinet mouthpiece on the opposite side you would regular trombone mouthpiece it sounds like a contrabassoon

Should try the opening to Rite of Spring. I wonder if a single reed would be better. Double reeds have so many overtones.

If you try a soprano sax (or clarinet) mouthpiece to the piccolo trumpet you will get a range from C#2 to C4 with only the 1st overtone (1st registry) which here with the reed is the C3 , and 3rd overtone (2nd regitsry) which here is the C4 and all intermediate notes with the 4 valves. Furthermore with an intermediate overtone and maybe higher overtones you get more notes and possibly get more than 2 octaves. To have easier jumps to the 3 basic overtoves of the mouthpiece with the reed you need a small registry hole at the plastic-tube adaptor very cloose to the mouthpiece that connect the soprano sax mouthpiece with the trumpet tube which you open for higher than the 1st overtone . So strangely somehow the piccolo trumpet is turned in to an instrument of range lower than a tenor saxophone ...somehow like a bass saxophone or a C3/G2 trombone ! (and definetly easier to play compared to the piccolo trumpet with the lips mouthpiece). With a double reed like that say of a basson you get more easily more than the 1st overtones compared to the single reed, as the double reed is more susceptible to lips pressure variations

Get a good bassoonist and they will be able to hit many more octaves. I could get about three octaves when I played the tromboon.

do tenor sax mouthpiece plus tuba. I did that after band once with a tenor sax player and my tuba. It sounded amazing.
