Amazing Job - I used to think Yin Yang was a boring symbol. I didn't realize it was so important and encompassing. I'm also so surprised that the ancient cultures had such a good understanding of how the universe works, even if explained in different myths and stories. For example, the Dao vs the big bang. Very informative, extremely well researched, and exceptional quality. Bravo.

Thank you Victor. RU-vid is saturated with creators, so it's mega competitive for us newbies ! On top of that, its algorithm does not favour creators like me, who post less frequently (due to the length of time it takes to make a video!). Therefore, we have to self-promote on our personal social media, and we really bank on 'shares' and word of mouth from our viewers ! :D Thanks again for watching !

One of the best videos I’ve seen on the subject. I’ve always felt a sense of connection with the yin Yang symbol because I feel duality and harmony are very important in my personality and worldview. Some years ago I studied fashion design and we had to come up with a “brand” for our designs. I wanted to represent myself in a more conceptual way and the idea of duality came to mind so I started to research yin yang as I wanted to learn more about the origins and spiritual/philosophical significance. That was when I learned about the hexagrams - I found it fascinating. I’ve been thinking more about it in the past year or so and have been curious about how it’s actually used in life and in Taoism. Yours was one of the only videos I’ve seen so far that talks about the hexagrams and other image making (which in itself is a fascinating history of early “graphic design”!) and I’m curious to learn more now about the applications of yin Yang. I’ll be checking out more from you. Thanks!

Wonderful video on the yin yang! It was very informative and entertaining! I really enjoyed the part on the Yijing hexagrams. I believe the briefest, yet most meaningful, synopsis of the universe and of life is the positive and the negative, the yin and the yang. In my view, everyone and everything in the universe is a unique blend of the two. I often tell people, understand these two most fundamental forces and how they interact and you will be very close to understanding the theory of everything.

Thanks! And yes, that would be a good video topic! I had only briefly learned about these hexagram symbols from the Yijing in some type of documentary I had seen many years ago but forgot what they were called. Now I know thanks to your video. One of the main reasons I had developed an interest in them is because I remember there were certain hexagrams that were used to express the cycles of the seasons and of nature and of life, as you discussed, which I would like to incorporate into a large painting I hope to create one day, expressing my philosophical views. I will keep an eye out for it. No hurry though, whenever you comfortably get to it.

Great video! I love the earlier yin-yang diagrams and didn't realize it was like a composite of other diagrams. I first read the Dao De Jing many years ago, always go back to it, and read the intro and background info in each translation I got my hands on. The connection to the I-Ching is always brought up in those. But, since the authors always mentioned the divination aspect of it, I didn't think the I-Ching was worth reading. It took decades for me to finally getting around to reading it. It is so much more than just divination. It really is fascinating and insightful. I'm kicking myself for not looking at it 30 years ago.
@ChasingGods
@ChasingGods 3 года назад
Thanks Lou! Yeah, the divination aspect had me turned off at first too 😆
@loulasher
@loulasher 3 года назад
@@ChasingGods I think seeing the I-Ching as a divination tool misses the point, it's like saying a crow-bar is a spatula (bad analogy but It's all I got at the moment). It is just so very much more than that. It's more like a paradigm in-and-of itself, a way of seeing the world that is really coherent. That you can "divinate" with it to me just amounts to you can see patterns in things and potential outcomes or problems. It isn't for building up or creating false hopes around superstition or anything, at least that's not what I see in it. Divination in general might be a clunky way of considering problems and possible outcomes, but the I-Ching is really deep making it maybe cumbersome but not clunky especially when compared to other things in that category.
@ChasingGods
@ChasingGods 3 года назад
@@loulasher I agree with you. The term 'divination' does the I-Ching injustice. @@ChasingGods Why do Westerners not understand yin-yang-Emptiness? The music theory definition reveals the secret of the math. So Western math assumes a symmetric logic as commutative analytic geometry (irrational magnitude). Orthodox Pythagorean philosophy is actually the same as yin-yang-Emptiness as is the "three gunas of no guna" philosophy of India. All these come from music theory as noncommutative phase logic. So if the 1 is "c" and the octave as 2 is also C that is the Emptiness but since 3 does not line up with 2 then it is 2/3 as a subharmonic or Yang as C to F (subharmonic) and 3/2 as yang is C to G overtone harmonic. But the 1 as an octave can not be the same as the 3. So then the 2/3 is doubled back into the octave (in the West) - using a different 1 - from the 3. That is how symmetric irrational magnitude is created. Daoist Harmonics does not do this but instead does not try to line up the octave (1/2) with the Perfect Fifth (2/3). So then in Daoist music theory there is 9 as the first note from the lunar energy and then 2/3 as 6/9 and then take 4/3 or yin of the 6 so it's 8/6. And you just keep alternating yin and yang without doubling back in as a symmetric. Professor Patrick Edwin Moran goes into this. "The Chinese rule is very simple: Take 2/3 of the length of the open string, and put down a fret there. Then take 4/3 of that second length and put down a fret there. The third step is to take 2/3 of the last length, then 4/3, and so forth. Let's see how that works." users.wfu.edu/moran/G_tar2.html Now keep in mind - it does not have to be "string lengths" - originally it was pitch pipes. So also then you get infinite resonance. The West tries to cover up this as a "closed" system but then has to acknowledge this noncommutative logic - but instead calls it "time-frequency uncertainty." This means that the order of the measurement changes the value (again 2/3 is C to F while 3/2 is C to G). So Eddie Oshins working at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center - he also taught Wing Chun and he focused on quantum psychology research. Oshins realized the secret of Daoist Neigong training (internal martial arts) was precisely this "noncommutative phase" logic. So what this means is that there is an inherent Emptiness as non-local complementary opposites. Oshins realized that the actual hand movements in relation to the body are based on this yin-yang secret as noncommutative phase logic. www.quantumpsychology.com/ You can see his site for details. Another good example is the book "Taoist Yoga: alchemy and immortality." So for example for a male the upper body is yang and lower body is yin and the right hand is yin and left hand is yang. So by simply facing the right hand against the upper body you create a noncommutative phase of yin-yang and then the left hand faces the lower body - and that is yang-yin. So that inherently activates the energy as a non-local or non-dual (not-two) dynamic, creating a free flow of energy that can be stored up in the body. The left eye is yang shen but yin qi and the right eye is yin shen but yang qi. So you combine the two by rotating them with the eyes closed and that creates the Yuan Qi (or Emptiness or original qi). Plato in contrast argued that Two-ness was an inherent symmetry - he called it the "indeterminate dyad" and as his evidence he claimed the two eyes or two arms or two legs, etc. are obviously "symmetric." But NO - that is not true! So as Westerners then from learning the Pythagorean Theorem - we assume this irrational magnitude logic as being inherently symmetrical commutative logic. So that is why Westerners do not understand the true secret of yin-yang-Emptiness because in the West time is "contained" as a symmetric geometric measurement. In Daoism there is eternal "bipolar" energy from eternal time - we can not see the Emptiness but we can listen to it! thanks.

@@ChasingGods Thanks for your interest. I finished my master's degree by doing intensive meditation training from springforestqigong.com Chunyi Lin who did the 49 day full lotus Daoist cave meditation (no sleep, no food, just full lotus meditation nonstop for 49 days) at Mt. Qingcheng where there is also qigongmaster.com Zhang, Yuanming of the Dragon Gate Complete Reality Daoist lineage. So a good book on that lineage - that I just reread - is "Opening the Dragon Gate" about Wang Liping, considered the "transmitter" of the Dragon Gate Neidan (alchemy) meditation. So anyway since I'm a Westerner - I first got interested in Daoism through music theory. I first realized a basic secret of Pythagorean meditation. Then I met qigong master Effie P. Chow of San Francisco - she did a presentation or qi-lecture at St. Mary's University in Minneapolis in 1995. She blew the fuse in the room behind her and I felt very strong qi energy between my palms. haha. So I went to S.F. in 1996 and I stayed with my high school friend James T. Hong. He drove me up to Portland and I discovered Dr. John Beaulieu's book on Biosonics - and he states the Perfect Fifth (3/2) is yang and the Perfect Fourth (4/3) is yin - of music theory. So that is also the same secret that I had realized from Pythagorean theory. But it was not till I discovered Fields Medal math professor Alain Connes that I corroborated my "secret" as he is the only one to emphasize that music theory is actually noncommutative phase logic (and therefore is also the secret of the Unified Field Theory). So I have a book on this called Ancient Advanced Acoustic Alchemy - it goes back to our original human culture that we are all from - the San Bushmen. So yeah my research is all free on my blog elixirfield.blogspot.com if you did see that already - you just scroll way down and on the left for my links to my free articles and books. I had to research a lot on my own because I did the intensive meditation training in 2000 but then I had a lot of after effects from the energy. So another good book on the traditional Daoist training - is the one I mentioned - that is free online. So it is archived but there is also a lineage with some websites from that teacher who was also part of the Dragon Gate lineage. Chunyi Lin has worked with the Mayo Clinic doctors - and so he did some qigong "external qi" healing research that was published in a peer-reviewed journal - with Dr. Ann Vincent of the Mayo Clinic. And also Dr. Nisha Manek co-authored a qigong chapter for the Mayo Clinic complementary medicine textbook. So now Dr. Nisha Manek has a new book published from her work with Professor emeritus William Tiller - on how Western science can try to explain Daoist qigong energy. So I did a lot of similar research - it requires the most advanced western science - relativistic quantum biology, essentially. haha. Anyway thanks for your video - it was very interesting as there were new connections for me. I suppose you are familiar with some of the already. My point is just based on the more abstract formal logic involved for yin-yang-Emptiness. For example for the male the left leg is yang and lower body is yin - so it is better to do full lotus with the left leg on top as this then stores up the energy. I did not know that even after my meditation training. So I was sitting in full lotus in public with my right leg on top - and I had a lot of qi energy going out of my pineal gland into people around me. I figured - well it is my body so then I can sit in full lotus if I want to. haha. Anyway it was an interesting experience. I also saw ghosts - so I know ghosts are for real, for a fact. And I experienced telekinesis and telepathy and precognition. So as Westerners we really have no idea what our untapped potential is and so I am very grateful to traditional Chinese culture for maintaining this amazing truth of reality. So now I am growing shiitake mushrooms in the forest - on logs - and I will sell them to the Chinese community here in Minnesota. thanks. Then also I can meditate more in the forest as my hermitage.

Thank you for the video, very informative. I've been studying Yin and Yang for about 40 years but still learning new things. Yin and Yang are essentially 2 different types of energy or qualities of energy. Understanding how these 2 energies manifest in disease it used and relied on extensively in Traditional Chinese Medicine or Asian Medicine in general. The 5 Element theory is also a pillar of how to diagnose and treat diseases as well. The human body by itself strives for balance and homeostasis. But in disease the balance can be thrown off. To treat the disease one must be able to diagnose where the imbalance is and correct it using the proper means. Simple right? Haha, no it can take a life time to really master it. But actually in a short time one can learn enough to apply it to more basic and obvious situations. Thanks again for the video, I did not know much at all about the history of the development of the concepts of Yin and Yang. I do know it has very ancient roots though. No doubt it was in use practically long before the scholars got together to codify it.

Dearest Sandra, Once again, you´ve done a GREAT WORK. I cannot add anything to your well elaborated description of the excellent ancient Yin Yang cosmology, but I have this comment: Our ancestors had the creation to be cyclical and eternal of nature, hence a thought of a beginning or an end is outside the mythical understanding. In the numerous cultural Stories of Creation, the telling is taking off by stating an unordered stage, "chaos" and then the stories goes on. But this is not a BEGINNNG" as the Universal process is CYCLICAL in their perception. - Our most inspired ancestors had without any doubts a huge Yin Yang knowledge of "islands floating in the Cosmic Sea", i.e., other galaxies outside our Milky Way Galaxy, But the ancient cultural creation stories regards specifically a creation description our own Milky Way Galaxy. So: My conclusion is: Yes the Yin Yang perception is "a map of the Universe" by its cyclical motion and formation. But the cultural Stories of Creation is NOT "a map of the Universe", but this telling is surely a map of our Milky Way Galaxy and everything inside it. Unfortunately, these cultural mythical descriptions of our Milky Way, is scholarly interpreted and thought to be a "beginning of the Universe", but it´s not as everything according to the correct Yin Yang perception is cyclical of nature. Best Wishes Alias Ivar

We had a chapter in English about Chinese paintings and how the Chinese artists focus on depth. It also explained the concept of yin and yang with the help of shanshui(landscape). This made me more curious about yin-yang. I really liked your explanation. Thank you so much. Love from India😊

Thanks for watching K-popper !😃Yes, Chinese artists make sure that there's a balance in shade and depth in their paintings; it's fascinating. I also believe that many other artists do the same thing sub-consciously as well!

I was a bit late to the party this time but exceptional video as always! The sheer amount of convoluted concepts that were covered in this video and explained in layman terms is just amazing! I don't know if this has been noticed before but the whole concept of thermodynamics and equilibrium in Chemistry is a lot similar to yin(disorder/chaos) and yang(order). Binary code too could be influenced by this for all we know. PS : 010001010111100001100011011001010110110001101100011001010110111001110100001000000111011101101111011100100110101100100001

thanks for this nice video, one portion that i was not able to understand was the the Theory of 5 faces, those arrows what does it mean? thanks
@ChasingGods
@ChasingGods 4 года назад
Thanks Viatun! Basically, the ancient chinese categorized things into 5 elements. These elements overcome or generate each other. (red arrow is "overcoming", blue arrow is "generation") From the red arrow, you can see that water overcomes fire; water kills/puts away fire. Looking at the big table, you can see that the chinese thinkers put the "knowledge" in the water category, and "passion" in the fire category. According to the Wu Xing theory, "knowledge" kills/put away "passion". Mental quality is just one aspect. The ancient chinese also categorized organs, planets, senses... into the fire/water/metal/earth/wood elements.

Good job! I only wished you had included all the Chinese words to all the important terms used. I don't know what "Shu" character is and if all the terms are in proper Mandarin Pinyin? It will help too to differentiate traditional Chinese characters with bracketed simplified Chinese writings. Then the whole topic can really give proper acknowledgement to the Chinese background and writings are as important too surely?
