I hated how everyone gaslights Nadine (and as a consequence us too), they neglect so much her self esteem, mental health and feelings that my anxiety goes up every time I watch it. They make her believe that she is the reason of the all problems when she is still mourning her father's death (which was the only one she felt that listened to her and cared about her), then she losts her best friend and NO ONE cares about she expressing clearly how bad her mental health is, minimizing it like she is being "'dramatic"... the movie hits too close to home and it is a pure demonstration of how society sees these issues.

Agreed, I wished that they'd added in a few scenes of her mother and Krista apologising to her, or if they'd made Darian apologise to Nadine during their big heart to heart conversation at the end. One thing I appreciated was that unlike "The Kissing Booth", where Elle's mother's death had barely any impact on the plot, Nadine still clearly feels the loss of her dad, since he was the only family member who really understood her. Her struggle to move on past the devastating loss makes sense, and we see how it effects her. We also see how her mum and brother struggle to cope as well.

that's actually valid, I never thought about it like that. I thought she was being unfair to krista and basically pulling a "kissing booth" on her but that's so valid that she didn't want her to be with darian because he was an asshole to her, I just feel like she probably didn't know how to say that that was why instead of how she actually said it (which was "you can't have both"/the poison in her voice whenever she referred to darian in any way.) I used to get bullied a bunch by random ass people at different points in my life and one of my siblings would literally laugh when I ranted about the bullying and would go befriend my bullies. they were never already friends with them, they became friends with them after I told them about the bullies and that reminds me of this

The first time I watched this I got so frustrated! Everyone is gaslighting this girl into thinking that she is the problem when she is not. The brother is an absolute ass, and HE WILL emotionally abuse his girlfriend/wife later. I kinda started to feel like I was being gaslit throughout this film and it just made made me so upset. And that is why I love this movie, it's not simple.
@dominicwood8298
@dominicwood8298 2 года назад
Well, Nadine 1) Made Krista choose between her and Darian 2) Tried to gaslight Krista into believing Darian would hurt her 3) Used Erwin's feelings against him, and 4) Stole her mum's car when, if I remember correctly, she couldn't drive (extremely dangerous for multiple reasons!). The friends and family aren't saints (not by a long shot), but that doesn't make Nadine a hero. Krista instigated the downfall, but Nadine was the one that made it happen, which negatively affected Darian, which negatively affected her mum, all of which negatively affected her. Everybody was right to be like "Hey, you're being shitty and petulant right now. You should stop", and I'm happy Nadine realised immature she was. But I agree with you that this film is awesome because it's not simple

i feel like i could have agreed with the ending if there was any scene of nadine’s brother ever being there for her. but instead he’s just a consistent asshole to her and just lets their mother walk all over her. realistically, these would be the kind of sibling that grow apart in life because theres no real love/connection there. yea shes immature but so is her friend for throwing a friendship that they have had for years for a high school relationship.
@milkyway8976
@milkyway8976 2 года назад
@@dominicwood8298 I think the biggest problem a lot of people have with the ending isn't that Nadine apologized, cause she did need to apologize. It's that she was the only one to do so. No one else apologized to her for how they treated her. Her mom and brother especially should have done so. Plus, a lot of the shitty things Nadine did were reactions to the shitty way the people who were supposed to care for her treated her. Basically, it was a bunch of hurt people hurting each other even more, but in the end only one of them takes any responsibility.

Yes it was really uncalled for but I can see her motivation. She lost her husband - she is raising her kids alone. They need her and she has no one to turn to grieve and constantly turns to her son to help her co-parent basically which is wrong so when Nadine is lashing out because she is still mourning her dad - it was the last straw for the mom. It is a difficult adjustment to make and this movie does a great job at showcasing that.
@lesliemedina2291

@@JJ-yn4cj very good points, but I just wish the movie had a seen where the mom and Nadine have a heart to heart and try to forgive and grow to show a fraction of how to take a step to a healthy relationship. Or end in the whole family going to therapy because they kind of suck at communicating their feelings and choose to last out/make wrong decisions instead of expressing their feelings. Family therapy could help a lot with that if it's what they wanted to focus on.

Okay no because Nadine’s brother was and is clearly the mom’s favorite so of course Nadine’s response to the death of their father would be magnified, she lost the parent that understood her the most. Again, grieving doesn’t give her pass but yeah her brother was being a jerk and was completely unsympathetic towards her. The way this movie made me rant since it came out. Most of the dialogue around it is about whether or not everything is Nadine’s fault, and determining her “innocence” like that’s the problem. Why are we determining the innocence of the 17-year-old girl in the first place? Why does the responsibility of all this drama fall onto one person, and if it does, why her? Start from the top.

The difference between the best friends brother trope here and in the kissing booth is that Nadine’s brother is actually shown treating her like shit and being the favorite so he best friend dating him is pm approving that behavior whereas in the kissing booth, Lee is literally the only one who has a problem! Noah leaves him alone except to beat up ppl who mess/w him and their parents don’t seem to have a favorite. Literally, Lee’s whole problem is that he has an inferiority complex and wants to own Elle whereas Nadine is genuinely treated badly by her family and doesn’t want her best friend dating her bully.

She knew she was Nadine's only friend and how Nadine was protective of her since she was the only person left after her dad died who actually cared about her and her life. She still didn't once consider talking to Nadine about it and giving her some time to see if she feels comfortable. She just went along hoping that it would be Nadine who would come back to redeem her friendship since _she_ clearly wasn't in wrong.

I was confused when I first watched this movie bc everyone made Nadine out to be the villain when in reality she was mourning the loss of her father, the one person she felt loved and cared for her, her best friend (her support system) ditches her for her brother who isn't nice to her at all and calls her dramatic, and her mom is manipulative, and she's the one who has to apologize? When her brother has that conversation with her about looking out for their mom and her after their dad died I was like really!? bc your sister has been acting out as a cry for help with her mental health, you took her support system away from her, and you pushed the figuring out of the drama of you sleeping with her best friend onto her and her friend when you are also involved in this conflict. Yes I know he has pressure to be support for his mom and his mom is going through a tough time too but that doesn't excuse ignoring your sister and calling her dramatic when she is clearly having a mental health crisis. I was mad that no one apologized to her and glad she made new friends at the end. After watching this reaction and reading ppl comments I feel better I'm not the only one who felt this way about this movie.Also I related to Nadine during this movie trying to navigate your best friend dating your brother bc I was in a similar situation.

Edge of Seventeen makes me appreciate my brothers a lot more. They avoided my friends and we avoided theirs. And in our mid-late teens, my brothers and I understood and respected one another. We had few petty arguments, we stayed together against my parents. My mum would try to say some shit about my brother staying in his room, I'd back up my brother saying that he could be reading or studying or playing a game, that he's not avoiding you. And they did the same for me. Siblings have to back each other up.

One of the best teen-centric movies to come out in recent years, and I think every member of the cast works so well with each other. Hailee Steinfeld & Haley Lu Ricardson felt like a real pair of best friends that you hated to see fall apart. Hailee, Blake Jenner, & Kyra Sedgewick felt like a real, struggling family. Hailee & Hayden Szeto / Blake & Haley Lu had believable chemistry to both their couplings. And then of course Hailee & Woody Harrelson were fantastically enjoyable in their interactions as the desperate, (seemingly) over-emotional student and the teacher who "just wants to eat his lunch, damn it" but is ultimately helpful to her in the end. 😆💖

Especially the scene in the car and the "heart to heart" with the brother just get me everytime! As you said just hits a little too close to home... And yes the mom is definitely the worst followed closely by the brother, the only thing Nadine wanted was to be loved and supported by her family and they just constantly dismiss her, it's heartbreaking. And don't get me started on Krista, that is not how a best friend should act. Like I maybe get like drunkenly hooking up with him, but after that you should have come to your senses and not continue seeing him. Especially since being Nadine's best friend you would have heard how shitty he was to her, why would you even want to date him? Just because he was like normal level nice to you for one evening? @@purplewine7362 girl why are you acting like that? I’ve seen your other comments, you’re oddly protective of this brother character. It seems like you’re projecting. Also rude of you to disregard someone’s abuse story…..hmmmmm. Also you’re very confident on other peoples experiences……where are your credentials? I’d like to see your ID and License number for psychology. You know, the one that everyone needs to legally practice. If not, do you have your degree? Honestly you seem so confident you should have no problem providing those for us right? Right? Also don’t try and turn this on me, I’m not the one going around trying to manipulate people and acting like a complete idiot by downplaying their abuse stories and their experiences! ❤️

@@meowmeowkillmenow4773 girl i'm not oddly protective of him, you guys are oddly apprehensive towards him. he was in the wrong too but trin's teen demographic thinks nadine was a blameless angel. I'm just trying to balance this echochamber ❤️ also, saying that being abused doesn't make you understand a movie more doesn't mean I'm downplaying or disregarding anything ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

As an older sibling I REALLY wanna defend the brother but at the same time he was a big ol asshole in this movie. If even felt that my sister was going through some shit I would not be gaslighted the fuck outta her and her feelings calling her selfish. I understand he and her BFF can’t help but fall in love I guess but at the same time it had to be her? The one person you’re sister relies on and then you go and take up all of that persons time when you know your sister has no one besides her?? I guess this made Nadine step out of her comfort zone and learn no to depend so much on her friend but as a big sister the brother took a low blow with that man

@Isaac gaslighting is defined as telling someone something deceitful other than their truth and trying to get them to believe it over a period of time, its like if you bought a blue shirt but I tried really hard to covince you that “no that shirt is red, you don’t see it?its clearly red” Nadine’s brother gaslighted her by constantly telling her that her feelings didn’t matter, he didn’t care etc. which made her question her own emotions-gaslighting. Hope that helped👍🏾

I can’t stand this movie simply because they make it seem like Hailee Steinfeld character is unjust in her behavior😭

See, I feel a lot of sympathy for Darian in this film (though I dislike his actions); but their mom? She's *cruel*. Despite her "growth" at the end, I just can't stand how she treats both of her children, not just Nadine.

9:12 When she mentioned the rock salt that literally reminded me of a Glee reference when Sebastian threw a smoothie at someone with rock salt.

The way that this is literally how I feel about this movie and it makes me so frustrated that nobody I’ve seen this movie with could see that Nadine was so relatable and neither her “best friend“ or her brother were good people to her and actually couldn’t even apologize makes me so mad

felt this soo much when watching it in theaters. I remember leaving so angry at everyone except nadine. my heart broke for her and couldn't understand how her brother and mother couldn't see what was going on with her and how, in the end, nothing ever really changed from beginning to end except she ditched her friend for better ones.

You are self-centered person who thinks the world revolves around them. Nadine was terrible and you are too if you think she is right.

I think Nadine was wrong for a lot of things, but I don't blame her for some of her actions. I think the problem was her putting absolutely everything into her best friend. It's not healthy and probably why her friends tried to take a break from her tbh

"I cant take that song seriously in scenes" reminds me of the song "all by myself" my mom finds this song sad and touching but all I can think about is the show's it's been used in for comedic effect.

Nadine was so lonely she ended up finding comfort in her English teacher and telling him all her problems. She was never the villain.
