Jacó has a reputation as a party town, however, it's got a lot more to it than that. Jacó is truly one of the MOST beautiful places in Costa Rica and is surrounded by an incredible beach, lush tropical mountains and vast farmland. Today I'm going to take you on an amazing hiking adventure in one of my favourite areas in my town of Jacó, as we hike through mountains, rice fields and rivers all the way to the iconic El Tajo Restaurant and Cantina. There are so many gorgeous spots I want to show you along the way, and loads of tropical plants as well, so make sure to stick to the end!
Thanks for watching! Pura Vida

Hi Bike Hike what an epic hike I enjoyed it very much. I`ve been to Jaco 9 times over the years. I`d love to do this hike on my next Jaco trip. Where exactly does it start and how many miles was it ?
@BikeHikeBotany
@BikeHikeBotany 2 года назад
Hello! Thanks for watching. The trail is located directly across from the first entrance to Jaco on the highway. It goes up into the hills and back down on the other side towards the rice fields... At certain times of the year, there are trails that cut through the rice fields all the way to the river. From there, I just hiked the river (better during dry season, and you MUST watch out for snakes out in this area) once you get to the bridge ( the one in the video) go up to the road and continue hiking until you pass Rainforests Aventures... At the "Y" take the right road up to El Tajo. I will be posting a map soon on my website so you will be able to see the exact trail I took. www.bikehikebotany.com Thanks again for stopping by. Pura Vida ✌️

I reckon it's about 10-12 Kms in total (there and back. ). I guess about 6-8 miles?

@BikeHikeBotany
@BikeHikeBotany 9 месяцев назад
The path has changed a lot since I made this video and you would have to take a different route. It's kind of hard to explain. It's a clandestine trail, so it doesn't stay the same year to year. Basically you start across from the first entrance to Jaco, across from calle gemelas. There is an obvious trail that goes up into the mountain and you have to find the path that leads over to the other side. Like I said, it has changed since last time so you might have to bushwhack a bit lol. 😂😂

Thank you : is the trail on that long road with no shade before you reach the mountain I did that once years ago by the time we got to the mountain I was exausted I think you go another way?
@BikeHikeBotany
@BikeHikeBotany Год назад
I started at the trail across from the first entrance to Jacó..it goes up into the red hills. When you reach a intersection in the trail, go right... Follow it down to the rice field bellow (this trail might be overgrown now),cross the dirt road and find another path that crosses the other rice fields till you reach the river. Then I hiked up the river till I got to the bridge at Rainforest Adventures and then I took the road up to El Tajo. I have to say,parts of these trails may or may not still exist. I frequently walk the area so I know it well but if you don't, stick to the main road. Also el Tajo Restaurant is no longer there. They moved much further up the mountains to Lajas. ✌️

Amazing videos! Do you have any recommendations on how a horticulturist could make a living in CR/Jaco? I know it is not always easy for expats to find jobs without being self-employed. Thanks for all you do
@BikeHikeBotany
@BikeHikeBotany 2 года назад
Thanks so much for watching. Really appreciate it. As for the recommendation, I don't know really. I used to have an indoor plant boutique here and it didn't survive the pandemic, unfortunately. The market has also changed quite a lot. Not sure I can advise you on this sort of thing to be honest. Wouldn't want to give bad advice. I think the best thing to do is to spend time living here and investigate what are the options, what is the current market, etc....Pura Vida😀

Ahah! Aho! The secret is revealed! Lindsey, watching these videos, I have been so amazed at your hiking skills and boundless energy, but now I know you don't really do all of that hiking. What you, inadvertently reveal at the very beginning of this video is that you actually appear in a puff of smoke mid-way through the hike and then continue walking from there. Not as impressive as I thought. Do your hiking buddies know about your little secret? Now, all I have to figure out is how you are able to travel around, IN A PUFF OF SMOKE!!!

Been living in Jaco full time for the past 6 years and it hasn't gotten to me. I don't go looking for drugs so that part of Jaco really doesn't affect me. San Jose is way dirtier. Lived there for MANY years also. Like I said and I'll say it again, there is a place for everyone but not every place is for everyone and thank goodness for that as we wouldn't want everyone to move to the same place. To each their own. Pura Vida.

I noticed you whistled at those dogs …did they ever think that’s a signal to play? Or doesn’t make them more curious or even aggressive to hear it? I’m just wondering for your sake not to mention there’s tons of wild animals where you are. Do you carry a spray with you possibly? Not bear spray, or pepper spray, even… when I’m walking around-and I live in California, lol-I’ll carry Febreze, citrus air spray, or a small bottle of rubbing alcohol and water. Anything, just to spray on any random loose dogs, because I do see them, and this is the “ritzy” part of San Diego, haha. I guess a lot of people with money just leave their doors and gates open I don’t care, “oh, the dog will come back he won’t hurt anybody.” Sure until you get that lawsuit… You were thinking to get out there to be dogs running around, but it’s the other way of course… Sorry I’m all worrying. Lol, not to mention if you get mugged… or if somebody shady tries to accost you.. or worse. I mean, yeah there’s mace but you don’t need to buy mace. There’s tons of sprays, even store bought air freshener, peppermint or orange oil, in water whatever lol. Do it!
@erikm8372
@erikm8372 Год назад
By the way, a lot of people I read stories about or hear about bear attacks, they had bear spray in their bag but of course there’s no time - so if you do carry a spray for self-defense, I recommend being able to carry it in your hand, ready to use when you’re hiking or walking around. Cause there’s no time in the moment, but that being said, yeah, I’ve never had to use it on a person or animal!
@BikeHikeBotany

@@erikm8372 Hi Erik. Thanks for your concern and suggestions. The whistle is supposed to deter dogs, as it can be a very loud and annoying sound for them. I've used it many times and worked like a charm, but some dogs are immune to its sound I guess LOL. As for other concerns, i carry pepper spray in my front pocket, and also a taser. I also have my hiking poles and am trained in martial arts. There are no threatening animals here per say. No bears or moose! There are wild cats, but they are mostly nocturnal and keep away from people. This area is not so remote that I am that worried. My biggest fear is running into a bad person, but I do take precautions and always let someone know exactly where I'm going, I check in often, and have a time of arrival planned. Pura vida
