I love the scene when the director says he's given Truman a normal, safe life and that the outside world is truly sick, then immediately says he's orchestrated his wife to leave him in the near future.

I think this was the first movie that Jim Carrey did serious acting. This is absolutely one of my favorite movies. Because while we all aren't in a movie, it feels that way sometimes. And when he broke all the rules to find his love, it's so inspirational and romantic. Glad you ladies enjoyed it. "I don't know what to expect next...." ~ Laura

After all of these years, you sort of pointed out something I never caught. "Truman was the true person." Truman is a pun of True man.

Harrison Ford was known for adventure films, but the actor wanted to expand his acting skills. He got Australian director Peter Weir to direct him in “Witness.”

Robin Williams was known for comedy. He wanted to be seen as a serious actor (he’d studied at The Juilliard School). And seeing the success with Peter Weir got him to direct him in “Dead Poet’s Society”. Jim Carrey, also wanting to be known for more serious roles and following on the previously mentioned, got Peter Weir to direct him in “The Truman Show.” All felt that this Australian director could bring out the serious actor in them.

Since Truman's 'dad' was alive after all, Truman no longer had any reason to fear the water. That's why he had no qualms about using a sailboat.

I love all the little things you don't necessarily notice the first time you watch. Like the travel agent still has her make-up apron on because she needed to be done up in a hurry. Although my favorite is when his Marlon is stocking the vending machine. If you watch, he has to keep taking candy out of the machine when Truman isn't looking, so he still has room and product to put back in as long as Truman is there. 29:42 They don't go to break, Magi. That's why they do all their advertisements in-world and in-camera. Whether it's the man stopping Truman next to the ad board, Marlon taking a sip and saying "Now that's a beer," or his wife rattling off the features of the new product she brought home.

The Truman Show: the biggest invasion of privacy EVER.

This movie, ‘Man On the Moon’, and ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ (which if you haven’t seen, you should definitely check them out) are my absolute favorite Jim Carrey movies, and some of my favorite movies, period. He did such an amazing job with his dramatic performances in those films.

Some people have commented that Truman never suspects anyone of pretending when they are obviously performing for someone, but it's as I said when you are born into a specific style of life and there's actually someone directing and steering things and you never learn about it, or even that it's possible, you'll never question it. Even the technology that Truman is exposed to is limited. Sure their might be internet and things but in this completely sealed off, contained Dome the only internet Truman is exposed to is what the people on the outside LET him see. He;s not actually calling a REAL travel agent or on the REAL internet. It's all a forgery set up by the production team to keep Truman under control. The money needed to keep this kind of situation happening must be staggering.

The Truman Show is a very special movie. Truly one of a kind, even if the concept isn't new. Every time you watch it you can find more and more things. I think it's really important to note that some of the characters, like his best friend, really do care for him, but they're caught in the same trap as everyone else. There's so much other stuff going on, greed, vanity, curiosity, habit, that almost everyone forgets this is a human being, it's a life. How is it going to end? We don't get to know. That's the point.

Great reaction - I think you touched on many of the key aspects of this - two other points 1) the movie shows the innate drive of a human being to be free, despite all the manipulation, and 2) do you notice that the real villain in this film is the AUDIENCE - they're "rooting" for him and "identifying" w him, and they know he's unaware of them - all of this is being done for the audience, so that they all can feed off of his life like this, and they know it, but they allow themselves to forget it - IMO this is really a kind of vampire movie

This is a great movie. Sadly what is lost is that all those people cheering for him were the same ones that having been watching him in a cage all his life and no one apparently was outraged at taking a newborn and treating it as property.

It always gets me. This was a movie that I saw for the 1st time after seeing the trailer that tells you "The movie is about a guy who doesn't know he's on TV" The movie its self (if you never saw the trailer and went in blind) tells you in the interviews , in the 1st minuet this is a TV show and Truman doesn't know he's on TV. and yet every single reactor who ahs ever seen this NEVER catches on to the fact this is a TV show and Trueman is unaware until the movie revels that space shot of the studio. like EV ERFY ONE gets THAT stumped when it should be obvious. Keep in mind this was made in the FIRST days of or even before the web cam. The idea people could be on RU-vid entertaining was New or unheard of. We used Webcams for fish tanks and views outside windows. The idea we could film a person doing nothing and it would be entertainment didn't happen till the Writer's Strike years later. Tureman invented the Reality Show.

The whole show revolved around Truman not knowing that he was being watched. Once he was told about it, the show would just not have been the same. Had the show continued, there would just have been 'phony emotions,' exactly what Christoff was trying to avoid.

This movie has many symbolical meanings. The star that falls inthe begining is specific. When Truman try to scape in the first time he pass in the earth, water, fire and air.

Growing up as a kid in Canada, Jim Carrey was my childhood hero. Him and Matthew Perry. I’ve always been introverted and painfully shy, and I viewed Jim Carrey as someone who I could be like. I’ve always tried to be the funny guy in the room. I wasn’t always successful at it, but when I did something to make people laugh, I felt good about myself because I made people laugh just like how my hero would make people laugh. Even to this day, I’m still a big fan of Jim Carrey, and I will be continue to be a fan until the day that I day. Watching you girls react to his movies and express how much you love him as an actor and a performer gives me great satisfaction because in a way, I feel like I am watching my childhood hero with fellow fans who love him as much as I do. Magy, you said at the start, that you love Jim Carrey. I feel ya. He did a series of cool, quirky movies around this time. I have an INCREDIBLE double feature that you need to check out. Start with Man On The Moon, with Jim Carrey playing the lead in an Andy Kaufman biopic. After that, check out Jim & Andy - The Great Beyond. It's a documentary about Jim getting into the head of his comedy hero; Andy Kaufman. I came away with a whole new level of respect for Jim Carrey as an actor, after watching that documentary. He's mesmerising. He's utterly brilliant.

The fun part is watching a second time & spotting all the cameras hidden in plain sight! My hint, when I saw this in the theater, was that weird camera angle when he was gardening. What's in plain sight that would give us that view? "Decorative" round lenses on the low property fences! This was advertised as a movie about a reality program in which only Truman didn't know his world was fake. So we, the audience in the theater, were routing for him to find freedom. But the genius of this film is that its writers anticipated clueless viewers like you, so inserted the "filmed since before birth" special midway in! Re: the ending. Remember that Christoff had promised that "everything would be real", yet there have been clear arcs, like steering him away from the extra who was NOT contracted to marry him! A core group of fans must've been disillusioned. We know that because of the Free Truman movement Sylvia is part of! Only when Truman woke up to the reality of his world did they start rooting for him, again. That's why the bar cheered when he escaped. I figure the mainland cop who said his name was probably watching the show an hour before, wondering if he would ever get a bit part! Then he got the frantic call from the studio. Mainland is usually part of backstage, used for storage. They couldn't ignite a real fire because it was too near the edge of the dome. The road he was on probably leads to the stage doors out of the dome. Pet theory: the "bus to Chicago" is probably a tour bus. I'm going off the little girl's reaction on seeing him. Wouldn't fans want to see this massive set? Fans love seeing studio back lots!

Nostalgia Critic did a review of this film and spoke of how it was ahead of its time, given how many people nowadays willing upload their entire lives onto the internet for the world to see. In that regard, think of Truman as the patron saint of the influencer.

Imagine if the whole World was watching the show Big Brother, but YOU were actually born there and were never told that there's a outside World. They build an entire town and beach and you are living in a Dome that is several hundred miles wide with sophisticated lights and camera systems and environmental conditions to simulate rain and storms at the push of a button. I mean if you are born on a space station and live there for 40 years that station is the only world you know. Imagine what it might feel like when you finally stand on a planet with actual solid rock or dirt under your feet?? When you are born into a specific environment and are never educated, it's easy to be fooled. Knowing myself as I am now, I might have been a bigger pest that Truman; but also, if I didn't know anything I might just go with the flow.

This has to be one of the greatest jim carrey performances and also in eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. Besides the comedy, I think Jim carrey is also good in dramatic roles like these ones. If you ever reach a point where you run out of ideas..for something to watch..I have been watching longer than most..because I have always loved movies..from cowboy movies when I was a kid to murder/mystery/film noir/modern who dunits..romantic..big time..from the 40’s..50’s , whenever up to present day..and things like The Beekeeper..and DisEnchanted ..syfy..Passengers..I have about 97% of everything in the can..in my brain..the first time watching you was for The Truman Show..I will check back..but I have a knack for remembering who is in what movie and pretty spot on when the movie was released and if it made money..all the way back to 1941’s Random Harvest..a perfect movie with Ronald Colman..great movie voice..and Greer Garson with her flaming red hair..nominated for best picture..won Best Supporting Actress and she died young..for real..

There's a song by Radiohead... in the video the random customers in this diner are singing the lyrics and making the song about themselves. It's called... um... Oh yeah, High and Dry (ofc there's a dramatic sub-plot about spies and criminals and stuff)

I would suggest watching Stranger Than Fiction. Wil Ferrell stars in it and it's another, "comedy actor doing drama" movie
