I think one aspect people overlook is BB himself. To me, at least, he's never been someone who is almost pure evil like Doflamingo himself. He's someone who can be reasoned with unless there's an interest there that permits him from not doing so. As in, he's not someone to go around, causing havoc, killing people for the hell of it. People like Ace, WB, and Thatch were just unfortunate victims to his line of interests. But if he didn't need the Yami Yami he wouldn't have killed Thatch, if he didn't want the Gura Gura he wouldn't have killed WB, and if he didn't want to a bargaining tool with the Marines he wouldn't have captured Ace. For all 3 of them, BB never had any malice there. They just happened to have something he wanted, and Bb is someone who will go to any depths to get it as that his own freedom even if it's a corrupt one to many people. So when Aokiji joins his crew, it's essentially him signing up to BB's form of freedom, doing what he wants to do, no matter what he has to do, to achieve it, much like BB.

Not only is he an admirable character. He’s an admiral character

BB having a charisma good enough to a point where he can convice someone as Aokiji to "join" him is amazing. It just makes BB even more similar to Luffy, since the protagonist of this history is also good at gattering people around him.

Aokiji is not the only marine who started out as completely loyal. Saul was just as loyal and he thought the archaeologists were tryna bring back an ancient weapon

Kuzan's dialogue excerpt from film Z gives some fascinating insights into his potential motivations "Out on the sea, pirates are born and die in search of One Piece and for each one that dies, another is born Are pirates born because One Piece waits on the far side of this sea? Or does One Piece really exist because pirates do? What comes first? The dream or the dreamers? As long as pirates pursue their dreams, there will also be people who have to grieve the loss of loved ones. What can one even do? Is there even an answer Former navy admiral Z gave his own answer "If One piece vanishes, the pirates will vanish with it" " To which he smirkingly says (while addressing the SH's in that scene) "Don't you think he's jumping to conclusions" ?

I'm hoping the battle between Kuzan and Garp will delve deeper into the concept of Justice in One Piece.

Whatever reason he may have, we have to remember that he chose to become a Blackbeard pirate. Not a marine, not just some ordinary pirate, and most important of all, he also chose NOT to become a revolutionary.

I personally think Aokiji is only with the Blackbeard pirates to protect Robin. I think Aokiji realises that he will want to go after her at some point for her knowledge so is with them until that happens.

Outside of the original BB pirates the rest of them also have their own agenda so Aokiji isn’t much different from them in that regard. Remember they discussed amongst themselves if they were going to leave BB if he couldn’t take the second devil fruit. They all have their own agenda as BB said.

I think Kuzan wants to know the truth behind the void century and use BB to get that truth and also keep tabs on him just in case he gets out of control.

I think it’s at least a cool coincidence that Aokiji is such a big part of the Ennies Lobby arc, an arc where luffy and crew do something that portrays them as evil, and Aokiji’s arc is him doing something that makes us really question whether or not he’s evil. Great video! Aokiji is one of my favorite characters, and this made me like him even more.

Aokiji's goal will be something like finding others with a sense of justice similar to his to create an organization that will replace the marines. I believe he might eventually join the revolutionary army or work with them as well. He'll have then played with all three side of the justice trichotomy.

Kuzan could be a huge hint toward Dragon's journey thought not the same, Garp is always the imposing figure behind both stories. I could see that.

Kuzan has always been a very compelling character. Oda is putting in some of his best writing into him and I'm very excited to see where he goes from here

From your point of view, it seems to me that Kuzan is actually running another experiment, to see how far absolute chaos fairs against absolute justice. As the counterweight, Kuzan's role shall be to learn how heave the tips of the scales are to try to understand the right path. As he said, he's living life on his terms now, so it's not like he will simply do as he is told.

Great video! My head cannon is that Aokiji wants to know why they had to slaughter the island of Ohara. He wants to find the truth of the void century to settle it once and for all of that was the right thing… so he probably realized while talking with black beard that they are in the running and a leader in the race for the rode poneglyphs … and even if they are not the winners they will at least be around and searching for the answers Aokiji is interested in.

Additionally BB hasnt really done anything to be seen as exceptionally evil in Kuzan's eyes, Kuzan had no attachment to WB or Thatch or Ace, He was evil fighting to kill WB and Ace himself during Marineford. He probably recognizes BB as not being as noble of a pirate as Luffy per say, but to him he hasn't done anything that bad

I think Kuzan wants to reveal the true history to the world. It would make sense due to how traumatized he was in Ohara. He just thinks Blackbeard would be his best shot at doing it. If this is the case, I could see him turning on Teach and joining Luffy at some point.

Hey Morj, I go to college and major in liberal arts. I don’t know if you go down the route of connecting literature to one piece, but you should read New Atlantis by Francis Bacon(1613). It’s only like 20 pages long, and ever since egghead started the connection to this text has been crazy. Before it only used to connect with skypiea, the new world, void century, and the structure of the world government, but now it seems like Oda was truly inspired by this text. More people should know about this, thanks!

Morj you should start a philosophy channel. Ur great at breaking down the philosophical implications of a person's behavior.

Aokiji does have a moral compass and he's following that to achieve his own goals but I wonder how he came to the conclusion that the ends justify the means. Joining the BB pirates to achieve his own goals is something that BB himself would do, and has done. I wonder about the path he follows. If Doflamingo says he hasn't heard good things, it makes you wonder what Aokiji has done since joining BB. All in all, Aokiji remains a fascinating character for me and I feel like the conclusion to his character arc will be incredible.

Very good video, there's a reason Kuzan is one of my absolute favorite characters in the series, his character is just so intriguing and his story post timeskip has been amazing to follow. Can't wait to see the conclusion.

I think an important change in Kuzan can be seen in his original form of justice being "burning justice" but in the current time referred to as "lazy justice". The second of which doesnt make a ton of sense fo4 an admiral initially, but i think it embodies his willingness to experiment as Morj said, and ultimatly his time with the BB crew is another experiment. Like he said to Smoker, there are some things you cant learn until you leave the marines

I think that part of Aokiji's point right now in the story is that he is still mistaken in his path, for he has chosen the fall of the World Government as his objective but backed the wrong horse and will most likely flip to the Strawhat Alliance, Revolutionary Army, or whatever SWORD becomes by the end of the story to accomplish this goal along those that will truly bring the dawn.

As someone with a creative writing degree, I haven't seen any other channels that touch on the nuance of Oda's character writing like you while also taking into consideration the context of shounen manga. Aokiji keeps moving up my character ranking, so I can't wait to see what Oda does with the payoff for his arc.

The truth is often found between two extremes. It seems reasonable to see that if he left the extreme of the world government, to the extreme of the worst pirate, he can see both of these sides, and set his moral compass somewhere in between.

Morj, do you have any theories regarding the man marked by flames? I think it’s likely scopper gaban, being the third roger’s pirate luffy will encounter in his journey (crocus on reverse mountain, rayleigh on sabaody and gaban in the new world), the black ship could be the oro jackson painted to disguise it and the egg may be responsible for the swirls (as it is speculated that it was the apocalyptical weapon that made the storm that helped the roger pirates against shiki in chapter zero)

I also love the juxtaposition in marine ford not only because it showcases how similar and thinking the "good" Akainu is with the "Evil" Blackbeard, but that it shows how Akainu views every "transgression" as equal when in actually the pirates he is going after will likely be committing no real crimes and at the same time the one Pirate that will be causing the most and greatest problems is behind him doing what he does while akainu is blissfully unaware. Showing that Akainu like a "Mad Dog" isnt thinking about the actual justice and what would bring the most good (which would be solely going after blackbeard rn). Akainu only focuses on and eliminates evil or so called "evil" when he should also be reinforcing the good like actual marines. Which works great symbolism in with his devil fruit. He only "takes away"(most destructive power) but never gives bac. He even could use his ability to create new islands and do other non-destructive thing but he only focus on the destructive/combative ability of it and chases everything he views as wrong and kills it without remorse. I cant wait to see akainu's backstory

Great video Morj! Just wanted to add that Kuzan very likely intentionally lost to Garp. IMO the whole scene is a parallel to Garp “losing” to Luffy during Marineford. A fake fall in battle because their morals don’t allow them to fight. Kuzan pointing out his former status as Garp’s apprentice is a hint towards this.

Robin was overthrowing kingdoms and being an assassin for a while... I think that's why Aokiji stayed firmly on the Marines for a long while. The demon child he'd let go of, was not proving to be a very good person...

People tends to forgot that Blackbeard is also really interested with world history and even Oda stated that he being archeologist if he is not a pirates, and we all know that Ohara-which Aokiji involve to destroy it-also a land of archeologist. So we can say that they share common interest.

Excellent character analysis morj, perhaps kuzans true goal is that he wants someone to find the one piece to end the great pirate era so that the marines can be a force for justice again and to also know the root of the marines corruption and he wont get that serving under akainus admin, kuzan sees Blackbeard as the man to pull that off and is using him, it would make sense as to why kuzan didnt turn to dragon to try and change the marines, as dragon doesnt care about the one piece and ending this current era of pirates

Remember in Film Z how Kuzan was saving civilians? Clearly Kuzan's goal has nothing to do with harming the innocent.

One thing to be said, Aokiji is not getting defeated by Garp that’s for sure and even Garp in his prime would have to put up a big fight against that man. Keep in mind that the new era or current era surpasses the old Aokiji was clearly portrait to be the strongest marine next to Akainu, what type of story telling would make the previous strongest marines (Garp and Sengoku) be stronger in there old version than the current strongest marines? It would literally be a joke this man went 10 days with Akainu and is not to be slept on. Aokiji will either defeat Garp or someone will interfere but he will definitely not be taken out by Garp that’s IMPOSSIBLE and would literally ruin the whole story of the old and new era. Aokiji's pulling an Anakin and I'm here for it

Kuzan feels like he has taken a path similar to Zephyr's (even if he is a Movie character) A marine who broke away from the Government after a tragic incident which shifted their view on the Marines & World Government to become someone who is free to decide his own justice and will face off against his former allies. In a way Movie Z is a strong tease into Kuzan's way of thinking and potentially foreshadowing something like his own death.

I believe the only thing aokiji wants in the end is fair justice but he feels like he doesn't have the strength and or power to truly change the Marines (since their controlled by the world government) so he's set out on a mission one that can only end in disaster but it's his only choice, because the enemy of my enemy is my friend, so he joins the most notorious pirate group that will definitely try to over throw the government and or marines because they have a really good chance at doing so, I know black beard pirates haven't been hyped up that much but this is more then likely gonna be the last pirate group the straw hats battle before finding the one piece so they are definitely powerhouses in their own right which would give kuzan a good chance at combating the world government

I think Aokiji's plan is actually fairly simple, he wants to destroy the world government and he doesn't think that Luffy alone is going to do it. He likely learned while in the marines that sometimes you do have to commit minor wrongs to facilitate greater rights, even O'Hara he probably didn't fully disagree with, he likely knows well that sometimes ostensibly peaceful motivations can create the conditions for violence and destruction, and that conversely violence and destruction can preserve wider peace. The blackbeard crew then may be a pretty good tool to weaken the marines and the world government to the point that they can be destroyed, and even if a lot of good people have to die and a lot of violence has to be done on the other side of that is a better freer world that will only come once the current one is destroyed.

I think Kuzan may find himself in too deep with BB. Whatever agenda or goal he may have in mind will at some point be dwarfed by what BB is doing and Kuzan’s contributions will be a big part of how he got there. Another reason why I think things won’t go the way he plans is because of Koby. Koby IS the future of the marines. He’s been around pirates and the worst of the marines, but he’s still working from within and didn’t give up like Kuzan kind of did. I feel like the way Koby is going about it is more in line with how Luffy might approach things, which has been shown to be the right way.

While I agree with your points regarding Aokiji in the context of the manga. I feel like this reasoning is only okay in fictional stories. A lot of people will do horrible things and be forgiven because others feel like "they are good deep below". But yeah, this is a goofy pirate manga, I get it

Kuzan joining BB is just his an Akainu's 4D chess plan to simultaneously fuck over pirates and celestial dragons by going undercover into each side. Their fight (in which they went all-out to avoid all suspicion) was a misdirection, similar to how Nami bullied the shit out of wounded Zoro in Arlong Park. Sword division was explained in the same chapter when we've been shown Kuzan joining Blackbeard, which is not a coincidence and it's obvious he's a part of it. Sword division is pretty much a rebel faction that puts needs of Marines above World Government. On a cover where Akainu is playing with bonsai tree, we see a tattoo on his right shoulder. It's a sword tattoo. And also it's obvious that he's pretty much boiling any time he has to deal with Gorosei. Akainu's actual loyalty to real bros is also quite on the nose. You know the cup-exchange tradition that's so important in One Piece? Sabo, Ace and Luffy became "brothers" this way, Jimbei and Mugiwara fleet pledged allegiance to Luffy this way, so in One Piece it's obviously a tradition that we associate with good guys. It also exists in real world. You know how it's called? Sakazuki.

Maybe he wants the BB crew to be the Emperor crew to deal the most damage to the WG in direct combat. Blackbeard can sacrifice his own crew mates to get it done, like soldiers, and Aokiji can be one of them to do so.
