Working for the public is the worst!! I always feel like I hate people and I want to punch everybody in the face lol but then I get those really pleasant costumers that make my day!

Dealing with the public is THE hardest part of any job. I AM naturally outgoing BUT I am also an introvert. I am an old lady. I left Veterinary Science with 17 credits remaining ( mom died) I was a firefighter for several years and ended up working with my ex husband for many years. I was a waitress and honestly most days were 200-400 a DAY. It was a 5 am to 10 pm;) and back in the day( college, Florida. I made big bucks in college. I could NEVER work with the public now. I have no patience for assholes anymore. I truly see people as much more inclined to be assholes than in the 70s and 80s and 90s. I see how shitty folks who work with public are treated now. Lousy. Sad. I own a ranch and breed poultry and goats now. If I can’t put them in a cage, or wrangle them, 😂, I am not dealing with them. Wish all you youngsters the best, still like people , but sure as hell do NOT want to work with them.😂❤️❌⭕️

I feel you. I was waitress and a nurse. The way customers, patients, families and managers treat you has a tremendous impact. Yes it help to stay positive and kind always taking the high road. However we’re only human and it does drain you and bring you down eventually. It’s difficult to always psyche yourself up or say affirmations. I wish people understood how important it is to treat others as you would want to be treated.

@Archiefarts 4 года назад
It’s not just about someone’s “god damn hair”. Sometimes we neglect our health for our careers, or our passion, or because it’s our livelihood. When we neglect those things, it makes catching up much harder. especially self employed stylists. 100% of your life relies on you showing up everyday no matter what.
@leemolloy1112

Kaila Golmicz yea I get that going to work is important but I mean people like my teachers who tell me if I take lunches during my work day I’ll never be successful or that I have to work 13 hour days or work 6-7 days a week. I’m just not okay with neglecting my health and mental health to do someone’s god damn hair

Girl! When I started cos school, I thought I was going to change the world. Man, I was like "I'm going to make women beautiful and change lives!" That quickly changed after I graduated. I jumped salons and could not find my fit. I began to hate working on women. They were so demanding and unrealistic. There were so many days I wanted to throw in the towel. Plus I wasn't making money. That all changed... I moved to a men's salon. I love men as clientele. They are so easy going and appreciative. Plus nine out of ten times, they tip really well. I'm so happy I found my niche. Now I am working on moving to a new state to help open a new salon with my company and become a manager. Things changed so fast, I mean 7 months ago I was so unhappy, now that I started this new company I am thriving and co workers, manager and owner believes in my talents! I look forward to work everyday now.

I really appreciate how honest you are with your income, I feel like people online don't like to talk about money when usually that is what people want to know. I started my own business a couple of years ago and wasn't making enough to live on and a lot of people around me would tell me to get a 'real' job. Now that I can support myself with that same business it shows them that as long as you work hard it will pay off.

I REALLY needed this advice 3 years ago . I went to Beauty school and realized mid way it just wasn’t for me at the end . I completed my 1600 hours of cosmetology October 2020 . I became so uninterested , it was so difficult for me to finish. It was such a drag , I didn’t even want to go to school most days . I wanted to become a hairstylist since I can remember , but man I was not expecting everything that I went through lol . Cosmetology school is not easy AT ALL. My journey was a hella roller coaster . I’m still debating whether or not to take the stateboard.

Tip for choosing a school: DO BACKGROUND OF THE SCHOOLS IN YOUR AREA. find a school that's inclusive if you are a person of color. i know that students sign a ethics contract at school for students. but look into the school in depth. trust me. i know from experience. im currently in school and i now absolutely hate it. its mentally draining for your motivation.

I definitely agree with you on how physically demanding being a stylist is ! I’ve been doing hair for 6 years now & omg it has RUINED my wrists, I get the worse back pain, shoulder pain, I wear glasses now ... it’s intense. I had to stop working my whole pregnancy because the salon I was at fired me for being pregnant & I didn’t bother to work at another salon because it’s so strenuous of a job..not to mention the clients are so damn stressful (some not all) .... a lot of times (at least me anyways ) while I was preg I wanted to just stay quiet and do my job but you have to be so outgoing it literally takes all of your energy... ugh now I finally have my princess :) but I’m def starting to second guess if I want to continue my career or change it ... since where I was previously working was a big name salon and didn’t have flexibility with my schedule, I also wasn’t making a lot of money. No benefits.. honestly,aside from absolutely loving what I do if I find something else that I can make more money and it be less harsh on my wrists & not have to deal with crazy people I would probably do it ... although I feel how you do as far as I won’t have the fulfillment that I get from doing hair .

Omg as a stylist of 20 years, this is so true! Dealing with the public can be so difficult. Especially with Instagram and people photoshopping their pictures, clients can have unrealistic expectations. I also find it very taxing to constantly act like I'm in a good mood and listen to everyone else's problems! It can become very exhausting. It's almost like you're their psychologist! I am a natural empath, so other people's problems weigh on me. You definitely need to be an actress behind the chair. There are days I don't feel like chatting or listening to others problems. Also, I've been heart broken many times by clients who I've had for many years, loved and bent over backwards for. They will drop you like a hot potato the minute they're unhappy with anything you did. Hair schools don't teach you about this stuff. It's mostly how you deal with people!

Aw thank you! I think that stereotype exists because there are so many people who get into this career without knowing the reality of it. They think it's fun and easy or maybe they're just not sure about what they want to do at all, so they start doing hair and then they aren't passionate about it, so they end up staying stagnant and don't become "successful," and eventually quit. And then that gives the entire industry a bad image. As long as you have a realistic idea of what to expect and are willing to give it your all, you'll have an amazing career :)

@@styledbysamvay I think you hit the nail right on the head! I think that when things become more "difficult" people tend to give up and look for other options then the stereotypes set in which sucks but I guess that is what happens all over. I love that your so transparent with your viewers! I think you should teach one day if you ever wanted to. I think you'd be amazing! 💋

Hey Sam! I’ve been watching your videos for a while now but I never comment, just like lol I’ve been working at a salon for a few months now but I’m mostly as a receptionist (I do have my license though ). My boss was supposed to train me but she’s super busy and hasn’t had time to but she wants to put me on the floor full time but I don’t feel ready yet, I don’t have a lot of experience with color and cuts. I’m wondering how you gained your experience, did you assist before you were on your own? Did your boss teach you? Was it all through you taking extra classes? Any advice on this would really help! Thank you ☺️

Hi! I was able to bring in friends and family as models and practice on them. So I would watch some tutorials from Behind the Chair and then practice different techniques on my models (or mannequins). I'd ask your boss if you can do something similar just to get your feet wet and maybe just have your models pay for the cost of product. You won't ever feel 100% ready until you just go for it and learn from your mistakes, but working on someone you know definitely takes the pressure off. Good luck! :)

@Sam Vay I love ur videos! I love ur makeup & u’ve got amazing lips! Even tho I’m a DIYer of hair (due to not being able to afford salons...yet) I’m always so into the way u explain things, the way u tell us ur experiences w/customers or as a customer- it’s enchanting! I feel like I’m right there, like reading a story! Plus I really do love the colors (the ones I’ve seen any way) on the “after” pics. I 💕💗💖 the “bronde” color u had gotten done by ur boss. Like legit want my hair that color! Love ur videos, keep ‘em coming!#hairGoals

I believe no jobs will have you kick your feet back and relax. cosmetology required so much passion and personality. If your mind keeps staying over the negative side. Then it’s really not for you.

Thanks for sharing the pros and cons. I am thinking of a career change I have been in a desk job for 10 years and I don't want to do it any more, but I do get decent healthcare and retirement contributions by my employer. It's a tought call, do you think cos schools might be open to me seeing if I could job shadow for a a day or two just to see what it is like?

Can you, as a hairdresser, tell me how do I politely tell my hairdresser that I don't want to engage in small talk. I just want to sit in the chair and have her do my hair the same way she has for the last four years. Don't want to be rude but would like to enjoy myself instead of pretending interest in a conversation I don't want.
@styledbysamvay
@styledbysamvay 4 года назад
Hahaha I totally get that! I don't know, I'm really bad at confrontation and I never force conversation with my clients, so I've never had that interaction with anyone - but you could just try being like "hey omg I've had such a rough week and I'm so looking forward to just relaxing and enjoying some silence" as soon as you sit down so she'll know that you don't want to talk before she starts so you don't have to cut her off mid conversation. Or you can pop in some headphones... even if you don't listen to anything, but just having them in your ears can kind of let her know that you're not interested in talking. Hope that helps!

I’ve always had hairstyling as a career option for myself but haven’t pursued it. I did makeup at a counter for a while and it was so fun but also very stressful at times. I’m 28 with a baby and feel like I’m too old for beauty school now😅

Hey Sam I love your videos and all the helpful information you share! As far as working what’s your opinion on working in a salon as to someone working alone out of home or a private space?
@styledbysamvay
@styledbysamvay 4 года назад
There's pros and cons to both! Being in a salon gives you access to possibly assistants, a receptionist, other stylists that can give you guidance if you need help. You also don't have to worry about all of the expenses, like rent, electric bill, product costs, etc. But working on your own gives you complete freedom, and some people just work better that way! So I think it just depends person to person. I will say though - I think working in a salon in the beginning is better! I see a lot of new stylists come straight out of beauty school and go off on their own and they have no idea what their doing and then have no one around to help them. I think being around other more experienced stylists and learning in a more traditional salon setting is crucial for at least the first year or two.
@debramccafferty2918
@debramccafferty2918 4 года назад
Sam, I agree with you. I wish I had worked with others in the beginning instead of opening a salon in my home. I could’ve used the guidance. But I ended up really enjoying my clients and making them happy for 20 years when I had to close because I got sick.
